Before paying an electric-car deposit, verify the exact vehicle, the all-in price, the written cancellation terms, realistic range, charging compatibility, supplied equipment, warranty, insurance and incentives. A reservation is not a guarantee that the specification, price or delivery date will remain unchanged; those rights depend on the seller, contract and jurisdiction.
Use the checklist below before you submit payment, then repeat the equipment and specification checks at handover.

1. Lock down the exact car you are ordering
Save the configuration screen, order summary and every written promise as a PDF or screenshot. Record the model year, trim, battery size, drivetrain, exterior colour, interior, wheels and every paid option.
Confirm the specification line by line
- Battery capacity and whether the quoted figure is gross or usable.
- Single-motor or dual-motor drivetrain, drive wheels and performance package.
- Wheel and tyre size, because larger wheels can affect range, ride and replacement cost.
- Seats, heat-pump or thermal-management equipment, towing hardware and roof-load limits.
- Driver-assistance, navigation, connectivity and other software features, including whether they are permanent, subscription-based or delivered later.
- Included charging cable, adapter, emergency equipment, mats and any promised accessories.
Ask what happens if the car changes
Ask the seller in writing whether it may substitute a battery, processor, camera suite, wheel design or other specification while keeping the same trim name. Find out whether you can cancel, accept a replacement or receive a price adjustment after a material change. Do not rely on a salesperson’s verbal assurance when the order terms say otherwise.

2. Calculate the total amount you will owe
Request a written, itemised, all-in figure rather than judging affordability by the advertised price or a monthly-payment example. Consumer.gov advises buyers to account for costs beyond the vehicle price, including registration, sales tax, insurance and maintenance; borrowing adds interest to the total cost.

Compare the total amount repayable and the term for each loan, not just the monthly payment. A longer term can make a payment look lower while increasing interest and leaving you owing more than the car is worth.
3. Read the order agreement before paying
Search the contract for the deposit amount, whether it is refundable, how cancellation works and the deadline for cancelling. Also identify the stated delivery window, price-revision clause and remedies for a delay or material specification change.

- Is the deposit held by the seller, applied to the purchase price or potentially forfeited?
- Can you cancel online, by email or only through a specified form?
- Does a price increase allow cancellation, and by when must you exercise that right?
- What happens if delivery moves beyond the estimate?
- When is the final price fixed: order, production, delivery or registration?
- Can the seller cancel the order, and what refund is due?
One automaker’s U.S. support process, for example, allows customers to view timing in an account or order confirmation and describes cancellation through its app. That is a seller-specific process, not a universal EV rule. Your agreement and local consumer law control.
4. Test the advertised range against your real routes
Laboratory range ratings are useful for comparing cars tested under the same market’s procedure, but they are not a promise of miles or kilometres in your conditions. Estimate energy needs for your daily commute, longest regular trip and an unplanned detour.

Include the conditions that reduce range
- Motorway or highway speed rather than urban traffic.
- Cold or very hot weather and energy used for cabin heating or cooling.
- Hills, strong wind, rain, snow and rough surfaces.
- Passengers, luggage, roof boxes and trailers.
- Battery reserve: decide how low you are willing to arrive at a charger.
Australia’s government buyer guidance notes that range varies with conditions and that battery EVs with more than 400 km of rated range are available depending on circumstances. Treat that as market context, not a promise about a particular model. Build your own margin: a car that only reaches your longest trip on an ideal day may require an inconvenient stop or a different vehicle.
5. Plan charging before you place the order
Identify where the car will charge overnight and on the trips you actually make. A long-range battery does not solve a difficult home-installation or sparse public-charging problem.

Home charging checks
- If you rent or live in a managed building, obtain written landlord, strata or homeowners-association permission.
- Ask an electrician to confirm service capacity, cable route, parking-bay access and any panel or trenching work.
- Obtain an installed-cost quote, not only the price of the charging unit.
- Check whether your electricity tariff offers off-peak rates and whether the car or charger can schedule charging.
- Confirm that the proposed unit’s output matches the car’s maximum AC charging rate; a higher-rated unit will not necessarily charge the car faster.
Public and road-trip charging
Map reliable chargers near home, work and your longest routes. Check connector, power level, opening hours, payment method, idle fees and whether an app or account is required. Australian guidance lists Type 2 and CCS2 among common plug types there; standards differ by country, so never assume a cable or public connector from another market will fit.
Confirm both the vehicle’s AC and DC capability. A car may accept rapid DC charging but have a much lower AC limit at home, or a high peak DC figure that cannot be sustained through the whole session. Ask for the charging curve or a practical time estimate from a stated state of charge when the seller provides one.
6. Confirm every cable and accessory included
Do not assume that an expensive car includes a portable charging cable, household plug lead, adapter or wall charger. The Australian Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water expressly advises: "Before buying an EV check if an EV charging cable is included." New Zealand Consumer Protection likewise tells buyers to inspect supplied charging equipment and inlet compatibility.

Put these items on the order summary
- Portable Mode 2 or equivalent cable, if offered.
- AC connector cable for public or home posts.
- Adapters for the sockets you are permitted to use.
- Wall-mounted charging unit, mounting hardware and installation scope.
- Tyre repair or inflation equipment, charging-card or network access and both key fobs.
Have the seller state the connector type, cable length and current rating. A cable that physically plugs in may still be unsuitable for the circuit or unable to deliver the expected power.

Obtain the warranty booklet for the exact market and model year. Separate the battery warranty from the general vehicle warranty and record its duration, mileage limit and capacity threshold.
Important warranty terms
- Minimum retained capacity and how it is measured.
- Coverage for battery modules, cooling systems, onboard chargers and charging ports.
- Exclusions for accident damage, flood, misuse, unauthorised repair or extreme storage conditions.
- Required servicing, software updates or diagnostic procedures.
- Transferability to a later owner and the process for making a claim.
- Roadside assistance and temporary replacement-vehicle provisions.
Australian government guidance uses "8 years or 160,000 km" as an illustration for many EV battery warranties. It is not a universal standard or a promise for your car. New Zealand guidance also recommends checking battery warranty coverage and software-update arrangements before buying.
8. Price insurance, incentives and local rules
Get insurance before committing
Request a quote using the exact model, trim, battery and postcode. Repair-part availability, battery replacement exposure, vehicle value and charging equipment can materially change premiums. Ask whether home charging equipment, a damaged cable and roadside recovery are covered.
Verify incentives at the correct date
Check the relevant government authority for eligibility, income or vehicle-price limits, application deadlines and required documents. Determine whether the rule uses the order date, delivery date, invoice date or registration date. A programme can change between preorder and handover, and a dealer’s estimate is not proof that you qualify.

Check local operating rules
Confirm parking, low-emission-zone, road-tax, charger-installation and electrical-permit requirements for your state, territory, region or city. Australian government guidance specifically directs buyers to the laws and advice for the relevant state or territory.

Use the same market, model year and test-cycle context when comparing cars. A table like this prevents a high headline range from hiding a weak ownership case.

Do not compare unlike advertised test cycles without explaining the difference. A larger rated number is not automatically better if the vehicle cannot charge conveniently on your routes.
10. Keep records from order to handover
Create one folder containing the signed agreement, order summary, receipts, finance disclosure, incentive correspondence, insurance quote, delivery updates and every message about a change or delay. If you cancel, retain proof of the date, method and the seller’s acknowledgement.
11. Delivery-day checklist for an EV
Schedule enough time to inspect the vehicle rather than treating handover as a quick key exchange. Compare the delivered car with the saved order before accepting it.

Vehicle and battery
- Verify VIN, model year, trim, drivetrain, battery and colour.
- Record odometer reading and battery state of charge.
- Inspect bodywork, glass, wheels, tyres, underbody and charge-port door in good light.
- Check that the supplied tyres, wheel size and towing equipment match the order.
Charging function
- Open the charge port and confirm the inlet matches the market specification.
- Connect the supplied cable or an approved charger and verify that charging begins.
- Check AC and, where practical, DC charging status, locking and release procedures.
- Confirm the vehicle displays charging power, estimated completion and scheduled-charging controls.
Software and accounts
- Record the software version and confirm promised updates, navigation, connectivity and driver-assistance features are present.
- Pair the official app or account, test remote locking and charging status, and transfer ownership from any delivery account.
- Ask how updates are delivered and whether a subscription is required for any feature you were promised.
Cables and accessories
- Count every cable, adapter, key, charging card, emergency kit, tyre equipment and floor mat against the written list.
- Photograph serial numbers and visible damage.
- Write discrepancies on the delivery record and obtain a dated correction plan before leaving.
If the vehicle, equipment or documents differ materially from the order, pause acceptance and ask what remedy is available under the agreement and local law. Do not let a promised later fix remain only verbal.
12. Common preorder mistakes and how to recover
Paying before checking the deposit rule
Read the refund and cancellation clauses first. If they are unclear, ask the seller to identify the exact paragraph in writing before payment.
Planning around the laboratory range
Recalculate using your highway speed, weather, load and reserve. If the route requires an unreliable charger, choose a different route, add a dependable stop or reconsider the vehicle.

Discovering that the cable is extra
Request a corrected order summary listing the cable and connector. If the seller cannot supply a compatible item, include its purchase and installation cost in the total comparison.
Relying on a disappearing incentive
Ask the authority, not only the seller, which date establishes eligibility and what evidence must be retained. Do not include an unconfirmed credit in your affordability calculation.
Accepting a changed specification silently
Compare the VIN build and equipment with your saved order. Escalate a discrepancy immediately and document whether you accept, renegotiate or cancel.
How to decide whether to place the order
Proceed only when the exact configuration and total amount are documented, the deposit and cancellation rules are acceptable, your regular routes have a workable charging plan, the supplied equipment is clear, the warranty meets your risk tolerance and insurance and incentive assumptions have been verified. If one of those items remains unknown, the safest next step is to obtain the missing written answer rather than treating the preorder as a harmless reservation.
