What to Check Before Buying an Unfamiliar Chinese Electric Car in Europe (2026 Checklist)

Before buying an unfamiliar Chinese EV in Europe, verify the exact VIN and EU Certificate of Conformity, seller status, warranty, safety rating, local repair capability, charging limits and battery condition.

By CarCody Team

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy only after you can document four things for the exact vehicle in front of you: EU approval and registration eligibility, a legally accountable seller with written warranty terms, a workable local repair and parts route, and charging and battery specifications that fit your use. A car’s country of manufacture is neither proof of quality nor proof of failure. The relevant evidence is the vehicle identification number (VIN), market version, model year, trim, contract, technical documents and support arrangements.

Start with the exact car, not the badge

Unfamiliar electric cars are often advertised with a model name that covers several market versions. A vehicle built for another region can look identical while having different software, safety equipment, charging hardware, radio frequencies, warranty coverage or emissions documentation. Treat the specific vehicle and its seller as the subject of your checks.

Record the identity of every party

Write down the legal seller’s full name, registered address and business status. State clearly whether the seller is a trader or a private individual. Record the manufacturer and the EU importer separately; they may be different companies and may have different responsibilities. Keep the sales advertisement, quotation, order form and all messages.

  • J1772 Compatible + Dual-Level Charging: Works with all J1772 EVs (Tesla requires a separate J1772 adapter). Level 2: built-in NEMA 6-20 plug. Level 1: included NEMA 5-15 adapter fits any standard outlet. Please confirm your outlet is NEMA 6-20 or 5-15 before purchase
  • VIN and, if available, the date of manufacture;
  • model name, exact trim and battery size;
  • model year and vehicle category;
  • country in which the car was first supplied or registered;
  • odometer reading and registration number, if used;
  • the seller, importer and manufacturer names; and
  • the country where you intend to register it.

Every important document should match this record. A sales representative saying that an imported car is “the same model” is not evidence that it is the EU-approved version.

Confirm EU approval and registration eligibility

Request the EU Certificate of Conformity

Ask for the EU Certificate of Conformity (CoC) for the exact car, not a brochure for the model range. The European Commission describes EU type approval as a system covering safety, environmental and conformity-of-production requirements. The CoC identifies a produced vehicle as corresponding to the approved type.

Compare the VIN and the vehicle’s variant details on the CoC with the car, order and registration documents. Check the manufacturer, type, variant, version, mass limits, propulsion details and other fields relevant to your national registration authority. If the VIN is absent, unreadable or different, stop the transaction until the discrepancy is resolved in writing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand what type approval does and does not do

EU-wide type approval allows a vehicle type approved in one EU country to be marketed across the EU. It does not remove the need to present the correct documents or complete the registration process in your country. Registration offices can require additional evidence, translations, taxes, inspections or proof of ownership.

Ask your national registration authority, or an established local dealer familiar with the process, to confirm the route for the exact variant before you pay. Clarify registration tax, import duty or VAT, inspection requirements, insurance eligibility and any incentives separately; these vary by country and can change.

Handle non-EU imports as a separate case

A car originally built for China, the United States or another non-EU market may not have EU type approval even when an EU-market model with the same name exists. It may require individual approval, engineering changes or documents that the seller cannot provide. Charging connectors, driver-assistance functions, language support, connected services and warranty terms can also differ. Do not assume that an EU CoC for another car covers yours.

Read the contract and warranty before paying

Identify who owes you a remedy

For a trader purchase, EU consumer guidance provides a minimum two-year legal guarantee for faulty goods, subject to national rules. The seller is responsible for that legal guarantee. A manufacturer or dealer commercial warranty is additional and cannot remove minimum legal rights. National law can provide more protection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a used vehicle is bought from a professional seller, EU rules generally continue to apply. In some countries, the parties may agree to a shorter period, but not below one year, under the conditions set by national law. A private-individual sale is not covered by the same EU consumer-guarantee rules. The contract should make the seller’s status unmistakable.

Put every promise in writing

The signed contract or written warranty should state who handles a claim, where the vehicle must be taken, and who pays transport or towing if the nearest authorised repairer is far away. Do not rely on a salesperson’s verbal promise that a local workshop will help.

Request separate terms for:

  • the legal guarantee from the seller;
  • the manufacturer’s commercial warranty;
  • the traction battery and its capacity threshold;
  • the drive unit, inverter and high-voltage components;
  • the onboard charger, charging inlet and cables;
  • software, connected services and updates;
  • paint, corrosion and bodywork; and
  • roadside assistance, recovery and replacement transport.

For each term, record duration, mileage limit, state-of-health threshold, exclusions, claim location, required servicing, transferability to a later owner and the process for approving repairs. These conditions are not universal across unfamiliar makes.

Use safety ratings as dated, variant-specific evidence

Read the complete Euro NCAP result

Search Euro NCAP for the exact model and, where listed, the exact trim and test date. Electric vehicles, including battery-electric cars, are assessed under the same Euro NCAP safety framework as other rated cars. The star result is only the starting point: read the adult-occupant, child-occupant, vulnerable-road-user and safety-assist category scores, the equipment fitted for the test and the protocol used.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the rating’s applicability notes against the car offered to you. A facelift, optional safety package or different market version can change equipment and performance. If the tested car had a safety option that is absent from your trim, do not present the published result as if it applied unchanged.

Account for changing legal requirements

The European Commission says additional requirements for new passenger cars and vans took effect across the EU on 7 July 2026. They include advanced emergency braking for pedestrians and cyclists, driver-distraction warnings, better forward vision, tests for worn tyres and an expanded safety-glass area. A car first registered before that date is not automatically subject to the same requirements or fitted with the same equipment. Ask which rules applied to the vehicle’s first registration and inspect the actual equipment.

Check recalls by VIN

Ask the local importer how it identifies open recalls, contacts owners and records completion. Where a national recall authority provides a VIN service, use it. Obtain written confirmation of unresolved campaigns and ask whether recall work is available locally without charge.

Prove that support exists where you live

Call an authorised workshop before purchase

Choose a workshop near your home or regular travel route and ask it to confirm, for the exact model year and trim, that it:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • accepts the vehicle for routine service and warranty work;
  • has technicians trained for high-voltage systems;
  • can access factory diagnostics, software updates and security procedures;
  • can order common mechanical, body and glass parts; and
  • can perform high-voltage diagnosis and repair, or has a documented escalation route.

Ask for the workshop’s name, contact person and confirmation in writing. A dealer’s statement that a service network is “coming soon” is not an ownership plan.

Map parts, escalation and recovery

Ask the importer where parts are stocked, how back-ordered parts are escalated, and who authorises warranty repairs. Confirm roadside-assistance hours, towing limits, cross-border recovery, loan-car arrangements and the location to which an immobilised car will be transported. Ask what happens if the importer changes or stops representing the manufacturer.

Do not overread repair legislation

EU rules and provisions address access to vehicle repair and maintenance information, but a regulatory provision does not prove that a nearby independent workshop has the tools, training or parts for a particular model. The EU Right to Repair Directive creates obligations for products within its specified Annex II categories and product-specific reparability rules. It is not a blanket guarantee that every electric car can be repaired locally.

Check charging compatibility as a complete system

Verify the car’s inlet and electrical limits

EU infrastructure rules specify Type 2 connectors for applicable public AC charging points and Combo 2 (CCS) connectors for relevant public DC points. These standards provide a useful baseline, not a promise of a particular charging speed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Obtain the market-specific specification sheet and record:

  • the car’s AC inlet type and maximum onboard AC rate;
  • the DC inlet type and peak DC rate;
  • the charging curve, including how power changes as the battery fills;
  • temperature, battery-state-of-charge or preconditioning limits;
  • whether an AC cable is included and its current rating; and
  • any adapter restrictions or software requirements.

A vehicle can use a compatible connector yet charge slowly because its onboard charger is limited. A high advertised DC peak is not the same as a typical journey time; sustained power depends on the battery, temperature, state of charge and charger.

Test your real charging routes

Check the electrical supply and parking arrangement at home, workplace charging, the public chargers you regularly use and the corridors required for long trips. Confirm that the wallbox can deliver the car’s maximum AC rate and that installation, load management and protective equipment are suitable. For public charging, verify connector availability, access method, payment options and opening hours on your routes.

A Type 2 cable may be a useful optional accessory, but buy one only after checking the car’s inlet, required current rating and included equipment. Do not assume that a cable supplied with another vehicle is appropriate.

Demand vehicle-specific battery evidence

For a used car, request a health report

Ask for a battery state-of-health report from a qualified source, diagnostic records, charging and fault history where available, and the exact battery-warranty document. The report should identify the vehicle or battery pack and explain the measurement method; a dashboard range estimate alone is not a health test.

Have the seller explain in writing the warranty’s capacity threshold, how capacity is measured, exclusions, servicing conditions and transferability. No single battery-warranty duration or threshold applies to every unfamiliar model.

Inspect for damage and contamination

Examine the battery casing and underbody for impact damage. Ask specifically about collisions, flood exposure, salt-water immersion and underbody strikes. An independent inspector qualified to work on electric vehicles can check for damage that is not visible during a short test drive.

Do not infer battery quality from the country where the car or cells were manufactured. The useful evidence is the condition of this pack, its documented history, warranty and repair or replacement pathway.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Calculate the cost of ownership locally

Obtain written local quotes rather than relying on a national average. Your comparison should include:

  • purchase price and any import, registration or inspection charges;
  • insurance for the exact model and driver profile;
  • financing cost, if applicable;
  • home-charger installation and electrical-upgrade cost;
  • home and public charging tariffs on your actual routes;
  • scheduled servicing, tyres, brakes and consumables;
  • roadside-assistance and warranty-expiry exposure; and
  • an evidence-based estimate of resale demand, not a guess based on national origin.

The European Commission Joint Research Centre reported that Chinese-origin vehicles represented 5% of new car registrations in the European Economic Area in 2024, or 485,954 vehicles. The EEA includes the EU27, Iceland and Norway, and the figure covers Chinese-origin vehicles across powertrains and ownership structures. It is market context, not a score for reliability, support quality or future resale.

Compare two candidates on the same evidence

Use the same model year, trim and country version where possible. Fill the cells with document references, not sales descriptions.

Comparison area What to record for each car Why it matters
Approval and paperwork CoC, VIN match, EU-market version, registration documents and national process Determines whether the car can be registered and legally used
Seller protection Trader or private status, legal-guarantee period, written commercial terms and claim location Defines who must remedy faults and how you pursue a claim
Safety Euro NCAP date, protocol, category scores, tested equipment and open recalls Prevents an old or different rating being applied to the car offered
Ownership support Nearby authorised workshop, high-voltage capability, parts route, diagnostics, roadside assistance and recall contact Shows whether a breakdown can be resolved in practice
Charging Inlets, AC limit, DC peak and curve, cable, home installation and route compatibility Connectors alone do not predict charging time or convenience
Battery and history Health report, warranty threshold, collision or flood history and repair pathway Battery condition is vehicle-specific and can dominate used-car risk
Total cost Local insurance, charging, servicing, installation, taxes and realistic resale evidence A lower purchase price may not mean lower ownership cost

Recognise deal-breaking warning signs

  • The seller will not provide a CoC or the VIN does not match the paperwork.
  • The contract names an overseas seller but promises local warranty support without identifying the responsible importer.
  • The car is described as EU approved solely because an identically named model exists in Europe.
  • No local workshop will confirm high-voltage support, diagnostics and parts access.
  • Warranty terms omit battery capacity thresholds, exclusions, transferability or claim location.
  • The seller quotes a DC peak but will not provide the AC limit, charging curve or cable specification.
  • A used-car battery report is unavailable, unauditable or replaced by a range screenshot.
  • Recall responsibility, roadside recovery and importer contact details are unclear.
  • You are pressured to pay before registration eligibility is confirmed.

Use this purchase sequence

  1. Freeze the identity. Photograph the VIN and record the exact trim, model year, battery and market version.
  2. Verify approval. Obtain the CoC, match it to the VIN and ask your registration authority about any country-specific documents or inspections.
  3. Verify the seller. Establish trader or private status, legal address, importer and the party responsible for warranty claims.
  4. Read the terms. Obtain the legal-guarantee and commercial-warranty documents, including battery, software, roadside and towing provisions.
  5. Check safety. Review the dated Euro NCAP assessment, equipment applicability and VIN-based recall status.
  6. Confirm support. Have a local authorised workshop confirm service, high-voltage repair, diagnostics and parts access for that exact car.
  7. Match charging to your life. Verify inlet, AC and DC limits, cable, home supply and the public routes you will use.
  8. Inspect the battery and history. For a used car, obtain a qualified health report and investigate collision, flood and underbody damage.
  9. Price ownership. Gather local quotes for insurance, charging, installation, servicing, taxes and recovery.
  10. Pay only after the file is complete. Keep copies of every document and make unresolved promises conditions of the contract, not informal assurances.

The decision rule

Proceed when the VIN, CoC, contract, warranty, safety evidence, local service route, charging specification and battery evidence all describe the same vehicle and the seller accepts responsibility in writing. If one of those links is missing, the risk is not explained by the car’s nationality; it is an unresolved documentation, support or condition problem. Delay the purchase until it is resolved, or choose a vehicle with verifiable evidence.
