Then pay an independent mechanic for a lift inspection and written report before you negotiate. A clean-looking truck, dealer certification, or vehicle-history report alone cannot establish that the Maverick is safe or mechanically sound.
Start with the exact VIN, not just the model year
Write down the Maverick’s 17-character vehicle identification number before you arrange a viewing. You can usually find it on the dashboard at the lower corner of the windshield, the driver-door label, the title, registration, insurance card, and service invoices. Compare the characters in every location. A missing, altered, or inconsistent VIN is a reason to stop until the discrepancy is explained by the appropriate authority.

Run that VIN through both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s recall lookup and Ford’s recall/support lookup shortly before you buy. A year/make/model search is useful for seeing general recalls, investigations, complaints, and manufacturer communications, but it does not prove whether one particular truck has an unrepaired recall. The VIN search is the one that identifies unrepaired recalls recorded for that vehicle.
Recommended Free Tools
Save or print the results and ask the seller for invoices or dealer repair orders for every completed recall. Do not rely only on a verbal statement that the truck has “no open recalls.” Ford notices have included cases in which a remedy was installed incorrectly or recorded as completed when the required repair was not properly documented.

Check the current do-not-drive advisory
Ford announced on January 6, 2026 that approximately 4,653 Bronco Sport and Maverick vehicles from model years 2021–2026 in the United States and Federal Territories were subject to a do-not-drive advisory under recall 26S36. The notice concerns a front lower control arm ball-joint assembly that may not have been assembled correctly. If it fails while the vehicle is moving, steering control could be lost.
Applicability is VIN-specific. If the lookup identifies recall 26S36, follow Ford’s instruction to stop driving and arrange the complimentary towing, inspection, and repair offered for an affected vehicle. Do not test-drive or transport that truck yourself while the advisory applies.
Understand why older recall examples still matter
On June 6, 2023, NHTSA described a recall covering 35,501 2022–2023 Mavericks within a broader 125,322-vehicle Ford, Escape, and Maverick recall. It involved specified hybrid vehicles with potential engine failure and fire risk. This is a dated example, not evidence that every Maverick is affected or that an unrepaired condition remains. Use it to reinforce the rule: check the actual VIN and obtain proof of the remedy.
Ford’s March 2025 notice 25S07 said certain 2022–2024 Mavericks might not have had the software remedy for 24S27 correctly installed. Its April 2025 notice 25C06 said certain 2022–2023 vehicles could have the 24C01 instrument-cluster remedy incorrectly recorded as completed. A repair invoice, recall-closure record, or dealer confirmation tied to the VIN is stronger evidence than a seller’s recollection.
Prepare before you visit the truck
Collect the basic facts in writing so you can compare the seller’s answers with independent records:
- 17-character VIN
- Odometer reading and asking price
- Title status and the state that issued the title
- Seller’s name, ownership history, and reason for selling
- Service, maintenance, and recall-repair records
- Whether the Maverick was in a collision, flood, or other insurance loss
- Whether it was used commercially, by a fleet, for towing, off-road driving, or with modifications
- Any remaining factory warranty or Ford certification documents
Ask for photographs or scans of the title and service records before traveling. A seller who cannot provide basic information may still have a legitimate explanation, but you should not spend money on travel or a pre-purchase inspection until the identity and paperwork are credible.
Arrange an independent inspection
Book a mechanic who works for you, not the seller, and ask whether the shop can inspect the Maverick on a lift and scan relevant systems. Tell the seller in advance that the purchase is conditional on an independent inspection. Request a written report that includes the VIN, mileage, observed defects, safety concerns, recommended repairs, and estimated costs.

The Federal Trade Commission recommends paying for an independent mechanical inspection even when a vehicle is certified or sold with a warranty. If a dealer refuses to let your mechanic inspect the truck, the FTC advises considering another seller. A dealer’s certification or safety inspection does not eliminate your independent check.
Get a history report, then reconcile it
Obtain a vehicle-history report and compare it with the title, registration, service invoices, inspection report, and seller’s timeline. The FTC names AutoCheck, CARFAX, and VINAudit as examples of providers but does not endorse any one provider. Look for title brands, salvage or rebuilt status, reported crashes, odometer entries, flood or hail damage, auction records, and long periods with no mileage or ownership data.
A report can be incomplete. The FTC states that a vehicle-history report is not a substitute for an independent vehicle inspection. If the report shows a collision but the seller says the truck was never damaged, ask for body-shop invoices and photographs; if the answer cannot be supported, treat the inconsistency as a material risk.
Inspect the title and identity documents
Before discussing price, compare the physical or electronic title with the VIN on the truck and the seller’s identification or business documents. Confirm whether the title is clear, financed, branded, salvage, rebuilt, flood-damaged, or otherwise restricted under the issuing state’s rules. A title that is “clean” in one state does not guarantee that the truck has never had damage; review the complete history and ask your state motor-vehicle agency about any unfamiliar brand.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck for an odometer disclosure when required and compare the mileage with service invoices, inspection stickers, tire replacement dates, and history-report entries. A mileage discrepancy is not automatically proof of fraud, but it must be resolved before you rely on the odometer for value or warranty decisions.
Walk around the Maverick before starting it
Perform the walkaround in daylight on a level surface. Bring a flashlight and, if you own one, a tread-depth gauge, but treat tools as aids rather than proof of safety. Never crawl beneath a vehicle supported only by a jack.
Body, paint, glass, and lights
- View each panel from several angles for mismatched paint color, overspray, sanding marks, ripples, and uneven gaps.
- Open and close the doors, hood, tailgate, and any bed-access panels. They should latch without excessive force or movement.
- Inspect the windshield and other glass for cracks, chips, mismatched markings, or signs of replacement that could affect cameras or sensors.
- Check headlamps, tail lamps, turn signals, brake lamps, reverse lamps, and exterior reflectors for damage, condensation, or nonmatching replacements.
- Look inside door jambs, under carpets, beneath the spare-tire area, and around seat mounts for dampness, mud, silt, corrosion, or a musty odor that could indicate water intrusion.
Bed and tailgate
- Inspect the bed floor, sidewalls, tie-down points, tailgate hinges, latch, cables, and any liner for bends, cracks, weld marks, or overloaded-use damage.
- Check whether the tailgate aligns with the body and stays securely latched on both sides.
- Ask about hauling, commercial use, and towing; request records for repairs to the hitch, wiring, suspension, or bed structure.
Tires and wheels
- Record the brand, size, and approximate tread of every tire. A mismatched set may reflect an earlier replacement or drivetrain-related issue.
- Look for shoulder wear, cupping, feathering, cracks, bulges, and exposed cords.
- Compare wear side to side and front to rear. Uneven wear can point to alignment, suspension, steering, or accident damage that requires professional diagnosis.
- Inspect wheels for bends, cracks, excessive corrosion, and missing or damaged lug hardware.
Underbody and leaks
With the truck safely supported by the inspection shop, look for fresh fluid, wet seams, bent structural members, crushed shields, severe rust, damaged wiring, and evidence of off-road impact. At the viewing, you can place clean cardboard under the parked truck to identify new drips, but the color or location alone is not a diagnosis. Ask the mechanic to identify each leak and estimate the repair.

Check the cabin and warning systems
Ask to see the Maverick cold, if practical, rather than arriving after the seller has warmed it. Before starting, turn the ignition on and confirm that warning lamps illuminate for their self-check. After the engine starts, the lamps that should go out should do so; a warning lamp that remains on, never illuminates during the check, or appears only after driving needs a documented explanation.
- Operate every gauge, information display, climate-control function, window, lock, mirror, wiper, washer, seat adjustment, and available camera or parking aid.
- Check the condition of seat belts, airbags covers, head restraints, pedals, and floor coverings.
- Look for water stains, damaged trim, loose wiring, aftermarket alarms, poorly routed accessories, or evidence that warning lamps have been masked.
- Confirm that the keys, remotes, wheel-lock key, owner materials, and charging or towing equipment promised in the advertisement are present.
Use a deliberate test drive
Test-drive only after the VIN and recall check do not show a safety prohibition, and obtain the owner’s permission. Choose a route with low-speed streets, a smooth road, uneven pavement, and—where legal and safe—a short higher-speed section. Keep the radio off so you can hear the truck.
- Cold start and idle: Note extended cranking, unusual smoke, rattles, knocking, unstable idle, warning lights, or abnormal odors. A mechanic must determine whether a sound is normal.
- Transmission response: From a stop and during moderate acceleration, watch for delayed engagement, harsh shifts, slipping, shuddering, or unexpected revs. Do not provoke the vehicle recklessly.
- Steering and tracking: On a straight, safe road, the truck should not pull, wander, or require constant correction. Feel for looseness, binding, vibration, or a steering wheel that is off-center.
- Braking: In a safe area, apply the brakes progressively. Watch for pulling, pulsation, grinding, excessive pedal travel, or warning lights. Do not perform an emergency stop on a public road merely for a demonstration.
- Suspension and chassis: Drive slowly over representative bumps and listen for clunks, squeaks, knocks, or repeated bouncing. Note vibration that changes with speed or braking.
- Displays and controls: Confirm that gauges remain normal and that lights, signals, wipers, climate controls, cameras, and other equipment continue working while moving.
- After the drive: Park on a clean surface, switch the engine off, and look for new drips, burning smells, cooling-fan behavior that seems abnormal, or warning messages that appeared during the route.
Ford’s Blue Certified inspection checklist includes engine start and idle, transmission operation, steering, suspension noises, brakes and ABS, gauges, VIN verification, and recall checks. Treat that checklist as a useful reference, not as a replacement for a mechanic who represents your interests.
Have the independent mechanic inspect the mechanical condition
The lift inspection should cover the structure, suspension, steering, brakes, tires, wheels, powertrain, exhaust, fluid leaks, cooling components, wiring, and underbody. Ask the shop to scan electronic systems as appropriate and to distinguish an active fault from a stored historical code. Request photographs of significant defects and separate findings into safety-critical, needed soon, and routine maintenance.
Ask for costs, not just a list of faults
A report that says “brakes soon” is less useful than one that identifies pad and rotor measurements, the affected axle, and an estimated repair range. Ask the mechanic to price immediate safety work, repairs likely within the next year, and deferred maintenance such as tires, fluids, belts, or a battery. Use those figures when comparing the Maverick with another truck and when deciding whether to walk away.
Verify warranty and certification terms in writing
Read the FTC Buyers Guide on the window and compare it with the proposed sales contract. Confirm whether the truck is sold “as is” or with a written warranty. Identify which systems are covered, the coverage duration and mileage, deductibles, exclusions, transfer rules, and who pays diagnostic charges. Do not treat a salesperson’s promise as part of the deal unless it appears in the contract or a signed warranty document.
Ask the dealer to verify any remaining manufacturer warranty by VIN, mileage, and in-service date. Coverage can depend on time, mileage, maintenance records, market, and transfer requirements; an advertisement alone cannot establish that it remains active.

Compare multiple Mavericks on the same evidence
There is no basis for declaring one Maverick model year or powertrain universally best from the available recall and consumer guidance. Compare the specific trucks using identical criteria:
| Comparison axis | Evidence to record |
|---|---|
| Recall status | VIN-specific open recalls, completed remedies, and dated repair documentation |
| Title and history | Title brand, ownership timeline, mileage continuity, collision or flood records |
| Mechanical condition | Independent report, safety findings, estimated immediate repairs, and scan results |
| Use and maintenance | Service intervals, towing, fleet or commercial use, off-road driving, and modifications |
| Road behavior | Cold start, transmission, steering, braking, suspension, vibration, and warning lights |
| Coverage | Remaining factory warranty, certification documents, written exclusions, and transfer rules |
| Total cost | Price plus taxes, fees, repairs, maintenance, and selected add-ons |
Choose the truck whose VIN, records, inspection results, intended use, and written price make sense together. A lower odometer reading does not compensate for an unresolved safety recall, branded title, missing maintenance, or a large repair bill.
Red flags that should change the deal
- The seller will not provide the VIN or the VIN differs between the truck and paperwork.
- A VIN lookup shows a do-not-drive or other open safety recall and the seller expects you to drive the truck away.
- The seller refuses an independent inspection or insists that only their shop may inspect it.
- The title, history report, registration, and seller’s story cannot be reconciled.
- There are signs of flood exposure, structural repair, odometer inconsistency, or concealed warning lights.
- The contract says “as is” when the advertisement or salesperson promised a warranty, return period, or repair.
- Repair estimates exceed the discount offered, or the seller will not put an agreed repair in writing.
Any one of these issues may have an explanation, but you should pause the purchase until the explanation is independently documented. If it cannot be documented, leave the truck and keep looking.
When to buy, negotiate, or walk away
Proceed
Proceed when the VIN is correctly identified, current recall results are understood, title and history records agree, the independent report finds no unacceptable safety or structural issue, and the written price accounts for known work.
Negotiate
Negotiate documented, non-safety repairs only when the seller is willing to provide a written credit, complete the repair with invoices, or reduce the price by a realistic estimate. Keep the inspection report and agreed remedy attached to the transaction documents.

Walk away
Walk away when a recall-related driving prohibition remains unresolved, the title or VIN is questionable, the seller blocks independent inspection, structural or flood damage is concealed, or the total cost no longer fits your budget. The money spent on a history report or inspection is cheaper than inheriting an unsafe or unrepairable truck.
U.S. scope and timing
This checklist uses U.S. federal consumer guidance and U.S. Ford and NHTSA recall materials. Recall status, remedy availability, warranty eligibility, and certification-program terms can change, so repeat the VIN checks and obtain current written confirmation immediately before purchase. Buyers outside the United States should use their own country’s recall database, title rules, inspection requirements, and consumer-protection law.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a vehicle-history report enough to buy a used Maverick?
No. It can miss damage or maintenance events and does not replace an independent inspection. Use it to reconcile the title and seller’s records, then have a mechanic inspect the truck and provide a VIN-linked written report.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Should I drive a Maverick that appears in recall 26S36?
No. Ford’s January 6, 2026 notice gives affected VINs a do-not-drive instruction because a front lower control arm ball-joint assembly may fail. Confirm the VIN and arrange the instructed towing, inspection, and repair.
Does Ford Blue Advantage certification eliminate the need for my own mechanic?
No. Certification documents can provide additional coverage or a return benefit for an eligible vehicle, but an independent inspection remains the buyer’s protection. Read the exact warranty and guarantee terms for the VIN.
What should I do if the dealer refuses an independent inspection?
Do not proceed without one. The FTC recommends considering another seller when a dealer refuses an independent mechanical inspection.
