Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMazda’s i-ACTIVSENSE is a suite of driver-awareness, driver-support, and pre-crash technologies—not a single system. Depending on the Mazda model, model year, trim, and market, it can warn about signs, nearby vehicles, lane drift, or cross traffic; help with steering or following distance; and, in some situations, apply braking.
Use the owner’s manual for your exact vehicle before changing a setting. Controls, available features, operating conditions, warning symbols, and whether a setting resets after the vehicle is restarted all vary. Do not routinely switch safety systems off or use a setting change to compensate for a fault, poor visibility, or inattention.

What i-ACTIVSENSE is
Mazda groups its active-safety technology under the i-ACTIVSENSE name. The 2026 CX-5 Owner’s Manual divides the systems into three broad families:
| Feature family | What it addresses | Examples listed by Mazda | What the vehicle may do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Driver awareness | Helps you notice signs, vehicles, lane drift, and traffic approaching from the side or rear. | Traffic Sign Recognition, Blind Spot Monitoring, Lane Departure Warning, Front and Rear Cross Traffic Alert | Provides information or an audible, visual, or other warning so you can respond. |
| Driver support | Assists a driving task while you remain responsible for steering, speed, and the road. | Mazda Radar Cruise Control, Cruising & Traffic Support, Lane-keep Assist | May help regulate following distance, vehicle speed, or lane position, subject to operating conditions. |
| Pre-crash safety | Attempts to help avoid a collision or lessen its consequences when a qualifying hazard is detected. | Smart Brake Support | Can warn and, depending on the situation and system conditions, intervene with braking. |
That classification is a useful mental model, but it is not a promise that every Mazda has every item. Mazda changes feature names and availability by vehicle and year. Identify the systems installed on your car in its own manual rather than assuming that a feature shown in a CX-5 manual is present on a CX-30, CX-50, Mazda3, or another model.

What each major feature does
Traffic Sign Recognition
Traffic Sign Recognition is an awareness function. It uses the vehicle’s available sensing and camera information to identify qualifying road signs and present information to the driver. Treat the display as assistance, not as a replacement for looking at signs and judging whether they apply to your lane, vehicle, or conditions.
Blind Spot Monitoring
Blind Spot Monitoring warns about vehicles in areas that can be difficult to see in the side mirrors. It is intended to supplement mirror checks and a shoulder check; it cannot make a lane change safe by itself and may not operate when its conditions are not met.
Front and Rear Cross Traffic Alert
Cross-traffic alerts are designed for situations such as reversing or moving where traffic can approach from the side. They provide an additional warning, but you still need to look around the vehicle and control the maneuver. The exact sensors, speed limits, and warning behavior are vehicle-specific.
Lane Departure Warning
Lane Departure Warning alerts when the vehicle appears to leave a detected lane without the expected indication. It is a warning system; an alert does not steer the vehicle back into the lane. Road markings, weather, construction zones, and camera visibility can affect operation.

Lane-keep Assist and Emergency Lane Keeping functions
These are driver-support functions that may provide steering assistance in qualifying circumstances. They do not turn a Mazda into a self-driving vehicle. Keep both attention and control, and be prepared for the assistance to be unavailable or to cancel.
Mazda Radar Cruise Control
Mazda Radar Cruise Control supports speed and following-distance management. The driver must set an appropriate speed, monitor traffic, and be ready to brake. A radar-based cruise system is not a guarantee that every stationary object, cut-in, or road condition will be handled as you expect.
Cruising & Traffic Support
Where fitted, Cruising & Traffic Support can combine assistance for speed, following distance, and lane position. It remains a support function. Keep your hands, attention, and judgment engaged as required by the vehicle’s instructions.

Smart Brake Support
Smart Brake Support (SBS) is Mazda’s pre-crash system. It can warn of a detected collision risk and, when its operating conditions are satisfied, may apply braking to help avoid a collision or reduce damage. The system is not an assurance that a crash will be prevented, and it cannot overcome excessive speed, limited traction, blocked sensors, or a hazard outside its detection capability.

Alerts are not the same as interventions
Before changing a setting, determine whether you are changing a warning or disabling assistance that can alter steering, speed, or braking. Driver-awareness systems primarily tell you that a possible hazard exists. Driver-support systems can influence the vehicle’s path or speed. Pre-crash systems can intervene with braking. Turning off an alert may remove a prompt while leaving another function active; turning off a system may remove the underlying assistance as well.
Mazda’s 2026 CX-5 manual states that active-safety technology supports safer driving and helps prevent accidents, but it also warns that a green i-ACTIVSENSE status symbol does not mean every system is operating. A system that does not meet its operating conditions will not operate even when the symbol is green. In that manual, an amber symbol indicates a malfunction. See the explanation and indicator behavior in the CX-5 manual.
How Mazda controls these systems
Mazda Connect settings
The Mazda Connect owner’s manual documents system-specific choices for selected functions. Depending on the vehicle, you may be able to enable or disable a function, select an alert type, or adjust alert timing. Those menus do not establish a universal Mazda layout: the available choices depend on the vehicle’s equipment and software. Use the settings described for your model in the Mazda Connect Owner’s Manual, and confirm what the setting changes before saving it.

Pressing the switch again restores the systems’ previous operation. If the vehicle is powered off while those systems are stopped with the switch, they automatically turn on the next time the vehicle is powered up. This restart behavior and this exact list apply to that CX-50 manual; do not assume another Mazda has the same switch, list, or reset behavior.
Another documented control pattern: 2026 CX-5
The 2026 CX-5 describes some i-ACTIVSENSE controls through Mazda Connect. Its manual says an OFF symbol appears when all systems are turned off using Mazda Connect. A CX-5 equipped with that interface therefore may not have the same physical switch as a CX-50. Check the screen path and indicator explanation in your own manual before changing anything.

Smart Brake Support while towing or on rough surfaces
The clearest Mazda-specific caution is in the 2023 CX-30 manual. It says to turn SBS off in certain situations to prevent mis-operation, including towing and driving on rough roads such as areas with grass and foliage or off-road. Read the complete conditions and procedure in the 2023 CX-30 Owner’s Manual.
That is a warning for the CX-30 manual’s stated conditions, not a universal rule that SBS should be disabled whenever a Mazda tows or leaves pavement. Before applying it to another model, find the towing and rough-road guidance for that vehicle. Re-enable the system when the stated condition ends, if the manual directs you to do so.

Changing an alert instead of removing assistance
If the problem is an intrusive sound or timing, first look for an alert-type or alert-timing adjustment in Mazda Connect. The documented settings include enable/disable choices and alert adjustments for selected systems, but not every vehicle exposes every option. Changing an alert is not necessarily the same as disabling the collision-avoidance function behind it.
Situations that are not good reasons
- Do not turn a system off to ignore a warning light or an unexpected cancellation.
- Do not disable assistance because you are distracted, tired, or unwilling to monitor the vehicle.
- Do not treat poor visibility, snow, dirt, or a blocked sensor as a reason to drive without caution; address the condition and follow the manual’s cleaning and operating guidance.
- Do not infer that a green status symbol guarantees active operation.
What to do if a system cancels or behaves abnormally
A warning, amber indicator, repeated cancellation, or behavior that does not match the manual calls for diagnosis, not a permanent OFF setting. First, note the exact message or symbol, the driving conditions, and which function stopped. Check the troubleshooting section for the exact model and verify that cameras, radar areas, and sensors are not obstructed, using only the cleaning and inspection instructions Mazda provides.
Mazda’s 2018 Mazda3 manual gives a specific example: certain faults automatically cancel lane-keep and lane-departure operation and direct the owner to have the vehicle inspected by an Authorized Mazda Dealer. Follow the equivalent instruction in your vehicle’s manual rather than trying to work around the fault. The relevant example is in the 2018 Mazda3 Owner’s Manual.
A safe decision process before changing a setting
- Identify the exact vehicle. Record the model, model year, trim, market, and whether the vehicle has Mazda Connect or a physical i-ACTIVSENSE switch.
- Name the function. Decide whether you are changing an alert, steering or speed support, or a pre-crash braking function.
- Read the matching manual section. Confirm the operating conditions, the systems affected, and whether the change is temporary.
- Check for a documented reason. Towing or rough-road mis-operation warnings must come from your vehicle’s manual; do not generalize from another Mazda.
- Prefer the least change. If an alert-type or timing option solves the problem, avoid disabling an entire group of systems.
- Confirm the indicator. Make sure you understand what the green, amber, or OFF symbol means on your vehicle. A status display does not override operating conditions.
- Restore normal operation. Re-enable a temporarily stopped function when the manual’s stated condition ends, and verify whether the vehicle will reset it automatically after a power cycle.
- Arrange service for faults. If a warning persists, a system cancels unexpectedly, or operation is abnormal, use the manual’s service direction instead of continuing with the system disabled.
Why your Mazda may not match an online instruction
Mazda manuals are tied to particular vehicles and years. A CX-50 switch can affect a different group of systems than a CX-5 Mazda Connect menu. A feature name may remain familiar while its sensors, speed range, settings, or restart behavior change. Equipment can also vary by trim and market. For that reason, an instruction such as “press the i-ACTIVSENSE OFF button” is valid only where that button and its documented function exist.
Use Mazda’s official manual library and select the manual for your vehicle. The examples above come from Mazda USA manuals and primarily describe U.S.-market vehicles. Other markets can use different names, equipment, or menu paths.
Bottom line for daily driving
Leave i-ACTIVSENSE systems enabled during normal driving and treat them as assistance, not automation. Use the exact manual to distinguish warnings from steering, speed, and braking intervention. Change a setting only for a documented, vehicle-specific reason—such as the 2023 CX-30’s SBS caution for towing or specified rough-road conditions—and restore normal operation afterward. Persistent faults belong with Mazda service, not with a permanently disabled safety system.
