A passenger-carrying Waymo entered the vicinity of an LAPD high-risk felony arrest in downtown Los Angeles before officers had fully blocked the intersection. The vehicle passed near police cruisers and a prone person, then reportedly continued its trip. Waymo said it was near the scene for no more than 15 seconds and that the passengers arrived safely.

The viral framing is broader than the verified facts: the available reporting does not establish that the car drove through gunfire, ignored a direct police order, or caused injuries.

That is the verified core of the widely circulated video. More dramatic descriptions—that the robotaxi drove through a gunfight, entered “crossfire,” ignored police orders, or nearly got its passengers killed—are not established by the available reporting.

What happened in Los Angeles?

At approximately 3:40 a.m. on Friday, November 28, 2025, LAPD officers were carrying out a high-risk felony arrest after a stolen-vehicle pursuit, according to reporting based on LAPD information. Video circulated online in late November and early December appeared to show a white Waymo making a left turn near several police vehicles.

The vehicle also appeared to pass close to a person lying face-down beside another vehicle while officers issued commands. The scene looked alarming because the police activity was already visible, but LAPD said traffic had not yet been fully blocked when the Waymo entered the intersection.

LAPD later said the robotaxi did not affect the officers’ tactics. Waymo said the vehicle was in the vicinity for no more than 15 seconds and that the passengers continued safely to their destination.

Was the Waymo driving through a shootout?

There is no reliable evidence in the reporting reviewed that the Waymo drove through active gunfire. The available sources describe a high-risk felony arrest or police perimeter following a stolen-car pursuit. They do not establish that shots were fired at the time the Waymo passed, that the vehicle was targeted, or that anyone was injured.

“Standoff” and “crossfire” became common descriptions in secondary coverage and social-media posts, but those terms imply facts that have not been documented. A more precise description is that an occupied autonomous vehicle entered the vicinity of an active police arrest through an intersection that had not yet been completely cordoned off.

The video can show the vehicle’s path and the presence of police activity. It cannot, by itself, establish what the Waymo’s sensors detected, whether officers issued a command directly to the car, whether remote support intervened, or whether the vehicle had a viable alternative route.

Why did the robotaxi continue?

The specific technical reason remains unresolved. Waymo has not publicly released the vehicle’s sensor logs, route-planning trace, remote-support records, or a detailed post-incident technical analysis in the material reviewed.

The most defensible explanation is an inference: the vehicle encountered an unusual, rapidly developing scene that was not yet fully closed to traffic and classified the route as passable. That does not mean the system failed to see the police cars or lights. It means that seeing an emergency scene and deciding exactly how to respond are separate problems.

A robotaxi might need to determine, among other things:

  • whether police vehicles are blocking the lane or merely stopped nearby;
  • whether flashing lights indicate an emergency that requires stopping, yielding, or rerouting;
  • whether a person lying in the roadway is part of the incident or an obstacle to avoid;
  • whether officers are directing the vehicle with hand signals or commands;
  • whether a route that appears legally open is operationally unsafe; and
  • whether the scene is changing quickly enough that a previously valid route should be abandoned.

Those judgments are difficult even for a human driver approaching an improvised police perimeter. They are more difficult for an automated system because the scene may not resemble a conventional road closure, and because police activity can evolve from one second to the next.

What does Waymo say its cars do around police?

Waymo’s published rider-support guidance says its Driver is designed to recognize police sirens and emergency lights, pull over as appropriate, and use support personnel to help resolve law-enforcement interactions. The company also says its vehicles can remain stationary until police arrive during a security incident and can communicate with people outside the vehicle through an external speaker.

Waymo says support staff are trained to assist law enforcement and can communicate with officers through the vehicle’s speakers. The company also acknowledges that navigating around and yielding to emergency vehicles is challenging because emergency scenes are dynamic and irregular.

These procedures show that police encounters are anticipated operating scenarios. They do not prove that the system correctly interpreted this particular arrest. A general capability claim is not the same as a published reconstruction of what happened at this intersection.

Did the Waymo ignore police officers?

That has not been established. The available evidence does not show that officers gave the Waymo a direct order to stop and that the vehicle knowingly disregarded it. Nor does it establish that the car violated a clearly posted road closure.

LAPD’s statement that traffic had not yet been blocked is important. Police officers may have been controlling the immediate arrest area while the surrounding roadway remained open for at least part of the encounter. A vehicle can therefore be dangerously close to police activity without having driven through a formally established barricade.

That distinction does not make the event unimportant. A police operation can be hazardous before a complete closure is in place, and autonomous vehicles need to handle the gap between an ordinary open road and a clearly marked emergency scene.

Were the passengers hurt?

No passenger injury was reported in the authoritative accounts reviewed. Waymo said the passengers safely continued to their destination, and no injury connected to this encounter was identified in the reporting used for this article.

The fact that the passengers arrived safely describes the outcome; it does not answer whether the vehicle made the best decision. A safe outcome can follow a poor decision, a defensible decision in a difficult situation, or a situation that looked more dangerous on video than it was from the vehicle’s actual path. Without telemetry and a formal review, the cause cannot be assigned confidently.

What the video can—and cannot—prove

Supported by the available record Not established
An occupied Waymo entered the vicinity of a high-risk LAPD arrest in downtown Los Angeles. That the vehicle drove through active gunfire or “crossfire.”
The vehicle made a left turn near police vehicles and a prone person. That officers were formally “stunned” or unable to continue their tactics.
The intersection had not been fully blocked when the vehicle entered, according to LAPD. That the Waymo ignored a direct police order.
Waymo said the vehicle was near the scene for no more than 15 seconds. What the vehicle’s sensors, planner, or remote-support team did at each moment.
Waymo said the passengers safely reached their destination. That the vehicle violated a clearly posted road closure or caused an injury.

Why this is an important autonomous-driving edge case

The incident is not a useful standalone measure of Waymo’s overall safety record. Crash-rate comparisons and other autonomous-driving studies address different questions, such as how often vehicles crash relative to human drivers. They do not directly measure performance around an improvised felony arrest.

This event is more useful as an operational edge case. Autonomous vehicles must interpret more than lane markings, traffic signals, and ordinary right-of-way rules. They must also respond to human-controlled scenes in which:

  • police cars may be positioned irregularly;
  • emergency lights and sirens may be present without a complete road closure;
  • officers may communicate through gestures rather than standardized signs;
  • people may be lying, kneeling, running, or moving unpredictably;
  • the safest action may be to stop even when the roadway appears open; and
  • the scene may change before a remote operator or support specialist can intervene.

NHTSA describes automated-vehicle deployment as a developing area involving testing, pilot programs, safety monitoring, liability, insurance, and technical limitations. Its Standing General Order is one way the agency collects safety information about certain automated-driving incidents. Whether this particular encounter produces a formal regulatory record or technical disclosure remains unclear.

What investigators would need to determine the cause

A meaningful reconstruction would require more than the short viral clip. The most important evidence would include:

  1. Perception data: whether the vehicle identified the cruisers, emergency lights, officers, prone person, traffic signal, and any cones or barriers.
  2. Planning data: what paths were considered, rejected, or selected, and why the left turn remained available.
  3. Vehicle-control data: speed, braking, steering, stopping distance, and the time spent near the arrest.
  4. Remote-support records: whether a support specialist was alerted, contacted the vehicle, or approved a route.
  5. Police records: dispatch audio, body-camera footage, traffic-control instructions, and the exact time any road closure was established.
  6. Scene timing: whether the police vehicles, officers, and road restrictions were already in place when the Waymo committed to the turn.

Until that information is released, it is reasonable to say the Waymo encountered a difficult emergency-scene interpretation problem. It is not reasonable to claim certainty about the internal failure—or to declare that the vehicle clearly behaved correctly.

What happens next?

Waymo’s public emergency-response procedures and LAPD’s 24/7 coordination hotline indicate that the two organizations have mechanisms for handling law-enforcement interactions. Those mechanisms may help prevent a repeat, but their existence does not reveal whether they were used during this encounter.

The key questions for any follow-up are whether Waymo reviewed the event, whether it changed detection or routing behavior for partially blocked police scenes, and whether law-enforcement agencies have clear procedures for communicating with autonomous vehicles before a perimeter is complete.

For readers who want broader context rather than a consumer product recommendation, autonomous-vehicle books covering robotaxi technology, safety, liability, and policy are a more relevant next step than unrelated car accessories. Availability and pricing vary by retailer and date.

Bottom line

The viral video shows an occupied Waymo entering the vicinity of an active LAPD high-risk arrest before the intersection was fully blocked. That was an unsettling and legitimate safety question. But the evidence does not show that the car drove through gunfire, ignored a direct police order, injured its passengers, or disrupted the arrest.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The unresolved issue is the vehicle’s decision-making: how it perceived a partially formed police perimeter and why it treated the route as passable. That is precisely the kind of unpredictable, human-directed emergency scene that autonomous-vehicle systems must learn to handle reliably.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did a Waymo drive through a police shootout in Los Angeles?

No. Available authoritative reporting describes an LAPD high-risk felony arrest after a stolen-vehicle pursuit. It does not establish that the Waymo drove through active gunfire or crossfire.

Were the Waymo passengers injured?

No passenger injury was reported in the sources reviewed. Waymo said the vehicle remained near the scene for no more than 15 seconds and that its passengers safely continued to their destination.

Did the Waymo ignore police orders?

That is not established. LAPD said the intersection had not yet been fully blocked, and the available evidence does not show that officers gave the Waymo a direct order that it knowingly ignored.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did the Waymo continue through the area?

The specific cause is unknown because Waymo has not publicly released the vehicle’s sensor logs, route-planning trace, remote-support records, or a detailed technical reconstruction in the material reviewed. The most plausible explanation is that the vehicle encountered an unusual, incompletely cordoned scene and classified the route as passable, but that remains an inference.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: A passenger-carrying Waymo briefly entered the vicinity of an LAPD high-risk felony arrest in downtown Los Angeles before traffic was fully blocked. The passengers were reported safe, and the available evidence does not establish gunfire, a direct ignored police order, or injuries. The important unanswered question is how the vehicle interpreted the incomplete and rapidly changing police perimeter.
