A lawsuit alleges that a FANUC industrial robot knocked Tesla robotics technician Peter Hinterdobler unconscious during disassembly at the company’s Fremont, California, factory on July 22, 2023. Hinterdobler is suing Tesla and FANUC America for approximately $51 million. The allegations come from a civil complaint; they are not a criminal charge or a judicial finding that either company is liable. The federal docket and a March 10, 2026 court order confirm the case and describe the alleged loss of consciousness, while leaving key questions about liability, the exact robot model, the medical outcome, and the case’s final disposition unresolved.

What the lawsuit alleges

Peter Hinterdobler, identified in the complaint and reporting as a Tesla robotics technician, alleges that a FANUC industrial robot struck him at Tesla’s Fremont, California, factory on July 22, 2023, throwing him to the floor and knocking him unconscious. He is suing Tesla, Inc. and FANUC America Corporation for approximately $51 million in claimed damages.

This is a civil personal-injury and product-liability lawsuit—not a criminal prosecution and not a court finding that Tesla or FANUC was negligent. The account of the accident comes from Hinterdobler’s complaint and must be described as an allegation unless and until established through evidence or a court judgment. The federal case is Hinterdobler v. Fanuc America et al., Case No. 3:25-cv-08001-EMC, before U.S. District Judge Edward M. Chen.

How the complaint says the robot moved

According to the complaint, Hinterdobler was helping a Tesla engineer disassemble a FANUC robot that had been moved from its usual position on the Model 3 production line. The engineer was allegedly attempting to remove the motor at the robot’s base to reach an internal component called a dress pack.

The complaint claims that the robot arm suddenly released without warning while that work was underway. It attributes the resulting force to the arm’s mechanical power and to an approximately 8,000-pound counterbalance weight. The arm allegedly struck Hinterdobler, threw him to the floor, and caused him to lose consciousness.

The complaint also reportedly alleges that the robot had been placed in an area not designated for that type of equipment and that the workers were interacting with it in a reasonably foreseeable way. It further claims that Tesla later adopted new rigging and safety protocols related to the robot and possessed video of the incident that it did not provide despite repeated requests. Those assertions are plaintiff’s allegations; the reviewed sources do not establish whether Tesla admits or disputes each one.

The machine should not be confused with a humanoid robot, Tesla’s Optimus project, or an autonomous consumer product. The public materials identify it as a FANUC industrial robot used in a factory setting. FANUC makes many types of industrial robots, and the available sources do not identify the precise model, payload rating, control system, or guarding arrangement involved.

What injuries have been publicly described

Early reporting described Hinterdobler as being knocked unconscious and suffering serious injuries. A March 10, 2026 order from Judge Chen confirmed that the complaint expressly alleges that the robotic arm threw him to the ground and caused him to lose consciousness.

The same order summarized information disclosed during a public hearing as indicating an orthopedic injury, at least involving the spine, an evaluation for a possible neurological injury, and an ability to return to work in a different capacity. The order did not establish Hinterdobler’s final medical diagnosis, the extent of any permanent impairment, or the medical causation of each claimed condition.

Why Tesla and FANUC are being sued

The claims against Tesla, as summarized in reporting, include allegations that the company failed to ensure the robot was safely de-energized, secured, and stable before disassembly. The complaint also reportedly asserts duties involving the robot’s operation, maintenance, supervision, training, inspection, repair, alteration, design, and warnings.

The claims against FANUC are different in emphasis. The complaint alleges that the manufacturer negligently designed the robot, failed to provide adequate safe-operation instructions, and supplied equipment that failed in a dangerous and unexpected manner.

These are competing liability theories, not findings by the court. A court would need to evaluate evidence about the robot’s design, its condition and configuration on the date of the incident, the work instructions, energy-isolation measures, rigging, training, warnings, and the actions of the people involved.

Why the complaint seeks about $51 million

The damages figures reported from the complaint total approximately $51 million. They are amounts claimed by the plaintiff, not money awarded by a judge or jury.

Category Reported amount
Medical expenses already incurred Approximately $1 million
Anticipated medical expenses At least $6 million
Pain and suffering $20 million
Emotional distress $10 million
Past lost earnings $1 million
Future loss of earning capacity $8 million
Past and future loss of household services $5 million

Hinterdobler’s attorney reportedly said the figures could change. Any eventual recovery could be lower, higher, or zero depending on the claims that survive, the evidence, settlement negotiations, and the outcome of any trial or appeal.

The docket records that Tesla moved to dismiss and that Hinterdobler moved to send the case back to state court. At a January 8, 2026 hearing, the court’s docket entry says the motion to dismiss was granted and the motion to remand was denied.

That entry should not be reduced to the unsupported statement that the entire lawsuit was dismissed. The accessible docket summary reviewed for this article does not provide the full reasoning or make clear whether the dismissal disposed of every claim and defendant, or only particular claims against Tesla. A motion to dismiss is a ruling on the legal sufficiency or procedural posture of claims; it is not, by itself, a finding that the alleged robot strike did not occur or that the defendants were not responsible.

The docket also shows later activity, including a March 4 order granting FANUC’s motion to substitute counsel and the March 10 order denying Hinterdobler’s motion to redact the hearing transcript. In that March 10 order, the court treated the general description of the alleged strike and injuries as part of the public record. It did not decide negligence, product defect, or ultimate liability.

Why lockout/tagout and stored energy matter

The alleged work was disassembly and maintenance, not ordinary production. That distinction matters because a robot can remain dangerous when it is not actively following a production program. Mechanical weight, gravity, counterbalances, stored pressure, electrical energy, and unexpected movement can all create hazards during servicing.

OSHA’s hazardous-energy guidance treats servicing and maintenance as work that can include disassembling, repairing, adjusting, and maintaining machinery when employees may be exposed to unexpected energization, startup, or the release of stored energy. OSHA’s control-of-hazardous-energy guidance emphasizes procedures that shut down machinery, isolate energy sources, prevent unexpected startup, release or restrain stored energy, and verify that isolation is effective.

In general, a robot-servicing energy-control process may require workers to:

  1. Identify every relevant energy source, including electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, thermal, chemical, and gravitational energy.
  2. Shut the equipment down using the established procedure.
  3. Isolate energy sources with the appropriate disconnects, blocks, valves, or other controls.
  4. Apply locks and tags under the employer’s lockout/tagout procedure.
  5. Release, block, or otherwise secure stored and residual energy, including energy that could allow an arm or counterweight to move.
  6. Verify isolation before work begins, including testing controls and confirming that the machine cannot start or move.
  7. Maintain protection throughout the job, with additional controls for group lockout/tagout and for any worker who must enter a hazardous area.

The NIOSH guidance on robotic workstations identifies unexpected or unintended robot motion as an injury source. It discusses workers being struck by high-speed robot movement or caught between a robot and nearby equipment. FANUC’s robot-safety materials similarly address hazards inside guarded areas, emergency-stop reset procedures, lighting, and maintenance that cannot be performed outside a dangerous area.

That safety context explains why allegations about de-energization, stabilization, rigging, guarding, and maintenance procedures are central to the case. It does not prove that Tesla violated OSHA requirements, that FANUC’s design was defective, or that any particular safety control was absent at the Fremont facility.

Robot identity: what is known and what is not

The available reporting and case materials identify the machine as a FANUC industrial robot associated with Tesla’s Model 3 production line. They do not establish an exact FANUC model number. That missing detail matters: FANUC’s product range includes robots with different payloads, reach, counterbalance arrangements, controls, guarding requirements, and maintenance procedures.

It would therefore be inaccurate to describe the machine as Tesla Optimus, a humanoid robot, or an autonomous robot that independently decided to attack a worker. The allegation is that a mechanical arm released during disassembly and struck a person nearby.

That Texas event is not the July 22, 2023 Fremont incident and is not part of Hinterdobler’s lawsuit as described in the reviewed materials. It should not be presented as an additional allegation in the same case or used to establish a pattern without separate, verified evidence.

Known facts versus unresolved questions

Status Details
Supported procedural facts The plaintiff is Peter Hinterdobler; the defendants are Tesla and FANUC America; the federal case is 3:25-cv-08001-EMC in the Northern District of California; the case was removed to federal court; and the docket shows later orders, including the March 10, 2026 redaction ruling.
Plaintiff’s allegations The July 22, 2023 mechanism of injury; the robot’s alleged sudden release; the approximately 8,000-pound counterbalance description; alleged failures involving de-energization and stabilization; the robot’s alleged placement in an unsuitable area; later safety-protocol changes; withheld video; and the claimed medical, earnings, emotional-distress, and household-service losses.
Not established in the reviewed sources The exact FANUC model; whether OSHA issued a citation for this incident; whether Tesla or FANUC admitted fault; the full reasoning and scope of the January 2026 dismissal order; the final medical diagnosis and prognosis; and the ultimate disposition of every claim or any damages award.

Further technical and training references

FANUC publishes robot safety documentation and a FANUC America education catalog covering safety, operation, programming, and technician education. Those materials can help qualified employers and technicians understand general robot-system risks, but neither the catalog nor a generic safety handbook establishes what happened at Tesla or proves that training would have prevented the alleged injury.

For automotive workers, plant managers, and robotics technicians, the practical lesson is narrower than the headline: maintenance work around industrial robots requires controls for all forms of hazardous energy, including mechanical and stored energy, and those controls must be verified before anyone enters a danger zone or begins disassembly. The lawsuit will have to resolve whether those controls, the equipment, the instructions, or the work conditions failed in this particular case.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was the robot in the lawsuit Tesla Optimus?

No. The available complaint and reporting identify the machine as a FANUC industrial robotic arm associated with Tesla’s Model 3 production line. They do not identify it as Tesla Optimus or a humanoid robot, and they do not establish the exact FANUC model.

Did the worker receive a $51 million award?

No. The approximately $51 million is the amount of damages reported as being sought in the complaint. It includes claimed medical expenses, pain and suffering, emotional distress, lost earnings, loss of earning capacity, and household services. It is not a court award, and the figures may change.

What is the current status of the Tesla robot lawsuit?

The federal docket says the court granted Tesla’s motion to dismiss and denied Hinterdobler’s motion to remand at a January 8, 2026 hearing. The accessible docket summary does not show the full reasoning or clearly establish whether the dismissal covered all claims and defendants, so the entire case should not simply be described as dismissed.

Was Tesla found to have violated OSHA lockout/tagout rules?

Not from the materials reviewed. OSHA’s hazardous-energy and lockout/tagout guidance explains why safe de-energization, isolation, stored-energy control, and verification are relevant to maintenance work. It does not establish that Tesla violated OSHA rules in this incident, and the sources reviewed do not confirm an OSHA citation.

How does the lawsuit say the robot injured the Tesla worker?

The complaint alleges that Hinterdobler was helping disassemble a robot after it had been moved from its normal production-line location. It says the arm suddenly released, allegedly using its own mechanical force and an approximately 8,000-pound counterbalance, then struck and threw him to the floor.

The Bottom Line

The complaint alleges that a FANUC industrial robot released during disassembly at Tesla’s Fremont plant, struck Peter Hinterdobler, and knocked him unconscious. The approximately $51 million figure is a damages claim, not an award, and the public docket does not yet provide enough detail to describe the January 2026 dismissal ruling as the final resolution of the entire case. The robot’s exact model, the parties’ potential liability, the final medical outcome, and the ultimate case disposition remain unresolved.
