Short answer: Waymo’s 100,000 paid robotaxi rides per week were genuine—but they were an October 2024 milestone, not the company’s current scale. Waymo later reported more than 250,000 weekly paid trips in May 2025, more than 400,000 in February 2026, and approximately 500,000 weekly rides across 10 U.S. cities in March 2026 reporting.
The financial catch is that Alphabet does not disclose Waymo’s standalone profit or loss. The broader Other Bets segment that contains Waymo reported approximately $382 million in revenue and an approximately $1.8 billion operating loss in Q2 2026. That does not prove Waymo alone lost $1.8 billion, but it does show that the Waymo-containing segment remained deeply unprofitable while robotaxi demand was growing.

Waymo’s 100,000-rides milestone is already outdated
Waymo’s original figure was real, but it is no longer the right number to use. On October 17, 2024, Waymo announced that it was providing more than 100,000 paid public rides each week in the San Francisco Bay Area, Metro Phoenix, and Los Angeles County. The milestone showed that fully autonomous ride-hailing had become a recurring public service rather than a small technical demonstration. Waymo’s announcement did not mean that the company had reached profitability.

|---|---|---|
| October 17, 2024 | More than 100,000 paid rides per week | San Francisco Bay Area, Metro Phoenix, and Los Angeles County |
| March 25, 2025 | More than 200,000 fully autonomous paid trips per week | San Francisco, Phoenix, Los Angeles, and Austin |
| May 5, 2025 | More than 250,000 paid trips per week | The same four markets, with more than 1,500 vehicles reported |
| February 2, 2026 | More than 400,000 rides per week | Reported alongside a $16 billion financing round |
| March 27, 2026 reporting | Approximately 500,000 paid rides per week | Ten U.S. cities |
The 200,000-trip milestone was reported by Waymo in March 2025, and the company’s May update said weekly paid trips had passed 250,000 while its fleet across those four markets exceeded 1,500 vehicles. Waymo’s May 2025 update provides the fleet context. Later, Waymo announced more than 400,000 weekly rides in February 2026, while March 2026 reporting put the figure at approximately 500,000 across 10 U.S. cities.

Those figures are not perfectly comparable: the geographic coverage expanded, and Waymo has used both rides and trips in its descriptions. Even so, the direction is unmistakable. Waymo has demonstrated substantial customer demand. It has not publicly demonstrated that each ride, or the overall service, is profitable.
The business is scaling faster than its financial disclosures
The phrase Waymo is not making any money needs a qualification. Waymo does generate commercial revenue from paid rides, but Alphabet does not publish a standalone Waymo income statement. Instead, Waymo is included in Alphabet’s Other Bets reporting category.
Alphabet’s investor FAQ says Other Bets revenue is generated primarily by autonomous transportation services through Waymo, but the segment also includes other businesses. That means the segment’s revenue and operating loss cannot be assigned entirely to Waymo without an unsupported allocation. Alphabet’s investor FAQ is the relevant disclosure.
In Q2 2026 reporting, Other Bets generated approximately $382 million in revenue and recorded an operating loss of approximately $1.8 billion. The Q2 2026 earnings-call reporting shows that the Alphabet segment containing Waymo remained deeply loss-making while the robotaxi business was expanding.
It would therefore be inaccurate to write that Waymo alone lost exactly $1.8 billion, or that $382 million was Waymo’s standalone revenue. The defensible conclusion is narrower: Waymo had substantial commercial scale, while Alphabet’s broader Waymo-containing Other Bets segment was not profitable.
Why hundreds of thousands of rides can still lose money
A weekly ride count measures volume. It does not reveal the fare collected, the miles driven to serve each passenger, the cost of the vehicle, or the amount spent developing and supporting the autonomous system. Robotaxi economics depend on all of those factors at once.
1. Every vehicle is more than a conventional car
A Waymo vehicle needs a production vehicle plus an autonomous-driving system consisting of sensors, onboard computing, communications equipment, mapping data, safety systems, and specialized integration. The cost is not limited to the purchase price of the underlying car.

The facility is intended to produce thousands of autonomous vehicles, which could eventually lower per-vehicle costs through volume. However, factories, tooling, engineering, validation, quality systems, and deployment capacity require substantial spending before they produce their full economic benefit. Waymo’s manufacturing announcement describes the Mesa operation and its role in scaling the fleet.

Waymo’s newer Ojai platform illustrates the same trade-off. The company describes Ojai as a rider-focused vehicle designed for autonomous ride-hailing and says it is scaling Waymo-enabled vehicles toward tens of thousands of units per year at the Mesa factory. Ojai also arrives with the sixth-generation Waymo Driver. A new platform may eventually improve capacity and reduce unit costs, but it first requires vehicle development, hardware integration, testing, safety validation, and production investment. Waymo’s Ojai announcement details that platform.
2. A commercial service still needs continuous research and development
Launching a paid service does not end autonomous-driving research. Waymo continues to develop perception, prediction, planning, mapping, simulation, edge-case handling, remote support, and safety validation. The system must work across different road designs, construction zones, weather conditions, traffic patterns, pickup locations, and emergency situations.
The arrival of a sixth-generation Driver alongside a growing ride service is a useful reminder: Waymo is operating a commercial network and still advancing the underlying technology. That ongoing research is part of the cost structure even when a particular vehicle is already carrying paying passengers.

A robotaxi can incur costs when it is not carrying a passenger. It may drive to a pickup location, reposition toward expected demand, travel to a charging or maintenance site, wait for a rider, or receive operational support. These are often called empty or deadhead miles.
As a result, the relevant utilization question is not simply how many rides Waymo completes. It is how many passenger miles and revenue-producing hours each vehicle generates relative to all the miles, energy, maintenance, support, depreciation, and insurance costs required to keep that vehicle available.
Public sources reviewed for this analysis do not provide a definitive current Waymo deadhead-mile percentage or a vehicle-level contribution margin. Any article that supplies a precise break-even ride count or cost per ride without transparent third-party assumptions is presenting an estimate, not a disclosed Waymo fact.
4. Safety and reliability require operating expenditure
Autonomous vehicles need more than software that can complete an ordinary trip. The operator must validate the system, investigate incidents, update software, respond to unusual road situations, coordinate with emergency responders, maintain vehicles, and manage customer support. Insurance and risk-management costs also matter, even though Waymo does not publish a complete per-ride cost breakdown.

Waymo and academic researchers have published favorable rider-only safety comparisons against selected human-driver benchmarks. Those studies can provide useful evidence within their stated scope, but they do not prove that every safety risk or operating cost has been eliminated. The published safety research should be read as a defined comparison, not as a blanket guarantee of profitability or perfect safety.

5. New cities create costs before they create mature utilization
Waymo’s growth strategy requires more than adding vehicles to an existing depot. Each new market can require mapping, local fleet operations, charging and maintenance arrangements, regulatory work, emergency-responder coordination, customer acquisition, and safety validation. Those expenses can arrive well before demand is dense enough to keep a new fleet busy throughout the day.
Waymo has discussed expansion into additional U.S. markets as well as international locations including Tokyo and London. In February 2026, the company said it was laying the groundwork for more than 20 additional cities during 2026. Expansion can increase the long-term addressable market, but it can also widen near-term losses because several markets may be in investment mode at the same time.
The $16 billion financing round is a bet on scale, not proof of profit
On February 2, 2026, Waymo announced a $16 billion investment round at a reported $126 billion post-money valuation. The round was led by Dragoneer Investment Group, DST Global, and Sequoia Capital, with participation from other investors and continued support from Alphabet as Waymo’s majority investor. Waymo said the capital would support geographic expansion and scaling. Waymo’s financing announcement provides those details.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →That funding helps explain how Waymo can expand while the Alphabet segment containing it continues to lose money. Investor capital can pay for fleet purchases, autonomous hardware, factories, research, market launches, and operational infrastructure before the service reaches its intended scale.
But a financing round is not operating revenue. A $126 billion valuation is not evidence that current rides are profitable. It indicates that investors and Alphabet are financing a long-duration scale thesis: the expectation that a larger fleet, more efficient hardware, denser demand, and a broader network could eventually produce attractive returns.
What Waymo would need to become profitable
Waymo does not disclose enough information to calculate a reliable public break-even point. The path to profitability would likely involve several improvements rather than one magic ride-count threshold.
- Higher utilization: More passenger trips and revenue-producing miles per vehicle would spread fixed vehicle, sensor, software, and operational costs across more business.
- Lower autonomous hardware costs: Higher-volume manufacturing and newer vehicle platforms could reduce the hardware and integration cost assigned to each robotaxi.
- Lower support costs: More reliable autonomy could reduce the need for remote assistance, intervention, incident management, and manual operational handling.
- More efficient fleet logistics: Better demand prediction, charging schedules, maintenance planning, and vehicle placement could reduce empty miles and improve depot utilization.
- Stronger mature-market revenue: High-demand trips, airport service, premium options, or other pricing strategies could increase revenue per vehicle. Waymo’s average fare and detailed pricing economics are not publicly disclosed, so the size of this opportunity cannot be calculated from the ride totals.
- Disciplined expansion: New cities may be valuable, but the company must eventually reach sufficient demand and fleet density in each market to justify launch and operating costs.
- Potential additional revenue streams: Partnerships or licensing beyond direct passenger fares could contribute in the future. No standalone future revenue mix has been verified strongly enough to describe as a current Waymo business line.
The key financial test is contribution margin: whether the money collected from rides exceeds the costs directly required to provide those rides, including vehicle depreciation, energy, maintenance, insurance, support, and fleet operations. Even positive contribution margin would not automatically mean corporate profitability. Waymo would still need to cover autonomy research, engineering, manufacturing investment, market launches, and broader corporate overhead.
What the ride numbers actually prove
The ride figures support several conclusions, but not all of the conclusions sometimes attached to them.

Waymo said it was on a path to one million fully autonomous rides per week by the end of 2026. That is a company target, not a realized result as of the latest figures in this reporting. Waymo’s 2025 year-in-review post described that goal.
How to judge the next Waymo update
The most useful future disclosures will go beyond a large weekly ride number. Watch for:
- Paid rides per vehicle and passenger miles per vehicle;
- Fleet size and the percentage of vehicles available for service;
- Revenue per trip or revenue per vehicle-hour;
- Empty-mile and charging-mile rates;
- Vehicle depreciation, maintenance, insurance, and remote-support costs;
- Contribution margin by mature market;
- Capital spending on vehicles, factories, and autonomy hardware; and
- A standalone Waymo profit-and-loss disclosure, if Alphabet ever provides one.
Until those figures are available, ride volume is best understood as evidence of demand and operational progress—not as a proxy for earnings.

Bottom line
The accurate version of the story is not that Waymo failed to monetize 100,000 rides. Waymo proved that customers would pay for autonomous rides at significant and rapidly growing scale. The unresolved issue is whether it can convert that demand into positive margins after paying for specialized vehicles, sensors, computing, charging, maintenance, insurance, operational support, safety work, research, manufacturing, and expansion.
Waymo’s approximately 500,000 weekly rides in March 2026 reporting—and its stated path toward one million—make the business commercially significant. Alphabet’s approximately $1.8 billion Q2 2026 Other Bets operating loss shows why commercial significance and profitability are still two different milestones.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did Waymo itself lose $1.8 billion?
No. Alphabet does not report Waymo as a standalone public financial segment. The approximately $1.8 billion operating loss reported in Q2 2026 belonged to the broader Other Bets segment, which includes Waymo and other businesses. It is not defensible to assign the entire loss to Waymo.
How many rides is Waymo giving each week?
The October 2024 figure was more than 100,000 paid public rides per week. Later company and industry reports put Waymo above 250,000 weekly trips in May 2025, above 400,000 in February 2026, and at approximately 500,000 weekly rides across 10 U.S. cities in March 2026 reporting.
Recommended Free Tools
Do more Waymo rides mean the company is profitable?
Not necessarily. Ride volume does not reveal fares, empty miles, vehicle depreciation, hardware costs, charging, maintenance, insurance, support, or research spending. Waymo’s public disclosures do not establish that its average ride or overall service is profitable.
What would Waymo need to reach profitability?
Higher vehicle utilization, lower autonomous-hardware costs, manufacturing scale, reduced support and empty-mile costs, efficient charging and maintenance, and sufficient demand in mature markets could improve the economics. Waymo would still need to cover corporate research, engineering, and expansion costs after reaching positive ride-level margins.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Waymo has real customers, accelerating ride volume, and major investor backing. What it does not yet have in public reporting is a standalone profit figure or proof that its robotaxi rides generate positive margins. The central business question is now cost per revenue-producing vehicle mile—not whether people will ride.
