Steering may take more effort than usual. The warning does not identify the failed part, so use caution and arrange service if it stays on or returns.
What changes when steering assist is reduced?
Electric power steering normally helps you turn the wheel. If its assist is reduced, the steering can feel heavier than normal, particularly when maneuvering at low speeds. GM owner manuals advise drivers to use caution while assist is reduced and recommend service if the message persists or appears repeatedly. See the guidance in the 2016 Chevrolet Silverado owner manual and 2017 Chevrolet Colorado owner manual.
The message is a warning about the steering-assist system, not a diagnosis. It does not, by itself, prove that the steering rack or any other specific component has failed.
Can you keep driving?
Base your decision on how the vehicle feels, not on the message alone. If steering remains controllable and the warning is the only symptom, drive cautiously to a safe destination or service appointment, following your vehicle’s manual. GM’s manuals say to use caution with reduced assist; the symptom-based advice here is prudent guidance, not a specific procedure stated in those manual pages.

If the steering becomes unexpectedly heavy or difficult to control, or the message comes with other serious warnings or symptoms, stop somewhere safe and arrange assistance. Do not continue if you cannot steer the vehicle safely.
What should you do if the warning persists or returns?
- Note what happened. Record whether the warning appeared at startup or while driving, whether it went away, and whether you noticed a change in steering effort.
- Arrange a diagnosis. If the message stays on or recurs, contact a dealer or qualified repair facility. The warning alone does not establish which component or repair is needed.
- Share the vehicle details. Provide the exact year, make, model and, if available, the circumstances and any diagnostic codes. Those details help determine which service information applies.
Do not replace a steering component, add fluid, or reset codes based only on this message. The cited manuals do not prescribe those actions, and the warning does not identify a failed part.

A GM bulletin applies to a limited group of vehicles
GM Bulletin 20-NA-113, dated June 2020, describes a possible calibration-related repeat-message condition on specified 2017–2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban and Tahoe, and GMC Sierra 1500 and Yukon vehicles in North America. Applicability depends on the bulletin’s listed build and equipment details; 2500/3500 HD trucks are excluded. The bulletin is a limited service example, not evidence that calibration is the cause on other vehicles or even on every vehicle within those model-year ranges.
In the covered scenario, a power-steering control module calibration issue could leave codes marked current and cause the message to recur at startup even after the original issue was no longer present. GM’s bulletin tells technicians to review codes across modules; its example also notes that an underlying wheel-speed-sensor fault may still require attention. A repeat warning therefore needs diagnosis rather than an assumption that one component is responsible.

A technician can assess the warning in the context of the vehicle’s exact configuration, actual steering behavior, whether the message is persistent or intermittent, and diagnostic codes from relevant modules. In the bulletin’s covered scenario, codes from other modules matter because steering-module codes marked current may not tell the whole story.
