The vehicle that drove off Virginia Beach’s 14th Street Fishing Pier on January 27, 2024, was recovered on February 2 after remaining completely submerged for six days. Responders had located it with sonar, but rough water, poor visibility, an unstable salvage barge and diver-safety concerns delayed the recovery. One deceased adult male was found inside the red Nissan Kicks.
The vehicle that drove through the entrance of Virginia Beach’s 14th Street Fishing Pier and into the Atlantic Ocean on January 27, 2024, was recovered six days later, on February 2. It had remained completely submerged while authorities worked through poor visibility, rough water, an unstable salvage barge and concerns about diver safety.

The recovery ended with the discovery of one deceased adult male inside the vehicle. Police and the Medical Examiner later confirmed that the vehicle was a red Nissan Kicks and that the man was a 57-year-old Virginia Beach resident who had been reported missing by his family.

At approximately 6:52 a.m. on January 27, Virginia Beach emergency communications received reports that a vehicle had driven off the 14th Street Fishing Pier. Police and fire personnel responded and found the vehicle completely underwater.

Authorities initially did not know how many people were inside or who owned the vehicle. Those details were not publicly established in the earliest reports. Responders used sonar to locate the vehicle on the ocean floor, but the search conditions made an immediate dive unsafe.
Contemporary local reporting said the vehicle had drifted northwest of the pier and was resting upside down. Those details came from local reporting and should be distinguished from the city’s official incident and recovery statements.
Why the car stayed underwater for days
The delay was not because the vehicle had simply been abandoned or could not be found. Sonar located it, but locating a submerged vehicle is different from safely attaching lifting equipment to it in the Atlantic Ocean.

- Rough water, which increased the risks of a dive and complicated the recovery operation; and
- An unstable salvage barge, which made it difficult to keep the crane and diving operation in a safe position.
A private salvage company attempted recovery on January 28 using a salvage barge and professional divers. That effort was postponed after adverse conditions made it difficult to stabilize the barge and raised continuing concerns about diver safety.
By January 30, CBS reported that the vehicle was still underwater more than three days after the incident. Police placed it approximately 17 to 20 feet below the surface.
Recovery on February 2
Crofton Industries returned on February 2 with a barge, crane, dive team and sonar equipment. A hard-hat diver secured the vehicle at approximately 9:00 a.m. The crane lifted it onto the barge at approximately 9:20 a.m.
The recovered vehicle was a red Nissan Kicks. One adult male was found inside and was pronounced deceased at 9:29 a.m.

What police and the Medical Examiner confirmed
The Medical Examiner identified the decedent as a 57-year-old white male from Virginia Beach who had been reported missing by his family. The official update did not publicly release his name.
Police said the act appeared deliberate, but that statement does not establish a motive. Police also said they found no evidence of criminality before the individual drove off the boardwalk. Those are separate findings: the police assessment concerned the apparent nature of the vehicle’s movement, while the criminality statement addressed whether investigators found evidence of a crime leading up to it.
There is no basis in the available reporting to state a motive or speculate about the man’s mental state. Because this was a fatal incident, descriptions should remain factual and avoid graphic or sensational detail.
What the early reports did not yet establish
Reports from January 27 through January 30 accurately described the location, the submersion, the sonar search and the recovery difficulties. At that stage, however, authorities had not publicly confirmed the vehicle model, the occupant’s identity or the final number of occupants.

Later information should not be inserted into descriptions of what officials knew on the first day. The Nissan Kicks identification and the Medical Examiner’s findings became available after the February 2 recovery and subsequent investigation.
Bottom line
The Nissan Kicks was not recovered immediately because the ocean conditions made the dive and lifting operation dangerous, not because authorities failed to locate it. Sonar found the vehicle soon after the January 27 incident, but recovery required a later operation with a stabilized barge, crane and professional dive team. Crofton Industries recovered it on February 2, six days after it entered the water, with one deceased occupant inside.
