Slate Auto is preparing to convert a former commercial-printing plant in Warsaw, Indiana, into the manufacturing base for its electric pickup. Slate’s current materials identify Warsaw as its U.S. manufacturing location and target first deliveries for late 2026. The project is important because the company is tying a deliberately simple, modular EV to domestic production, direct sales, and an accessories-based ownership model—but the plant should not yet be described as a completed, fully operational assembly facility.

Slate Auto is preparing to turn a former commercial-printing plant in Warsaw, Indiana, into the manufacturing base for its small electric pickup. The company’s materials now identify Warsaw as its U.S. manufacturing location, while its current target is to begin customer deliveries in late 2026. That makes the project significant—but it does not yet mean the plant is producing vehicles or that Slate has reached full-rate manufacturing.

The roughly 1.4-million-square-foot facility was built in 1958 and was formerly associated with R.R. Donnelley and LSC Communications. Slate is betting that a large existing industrial building can be converted into an automotive plant while supporting a deliberately simple vehicle, a direct-sales model, and an aftermarket built around accessories and body-style changes.

What is happening at the Warsaw plant?

In April 2025, reporting indicated that Slate was close to securing the former printing facility in Warsaw. Local economic-development discussions suggested the project could eventually support as many as 2,000 jobs, but that figure was a potential maximum—not a confirmed permanent headcount or a guarantee of how many jobs will exist when production begins.

Slate’s later official materials identify Warsaw as the company’s manufacturing location and describe the facility as part of its plan to build vehicles in the United States. The company is therefore no longer presenting the site merely as a possible location. However, the available information supports a production-preparation and plant-conversion phase, not a claim that mass production has already started.

The distinction matters. Converting a large industrial building into an automotive factory involves installing assembly equipment, battery and high-voltage handling systems, quality-control processes, logistics infrastructure, employee training, supplier coordination, and regulatory validation. A former printing plant may offer useful space and existing industrial infrastructure, but it is not automatically an operational vehicle assembly plant.

Why reuse a former printing plant?

Slate’s choice is strategically relevant because the building’s previous use highlights the unusual nature of the company’s manufacturing plan. The site was designed for large-scale commercial printing, including catalog work, rather than vehicle production. Slate is attempting to reuse that industrial footprint instead of starting with a newly built automotive campus.

That approach could reduce some construction time and avoid the cost of developing an entirely new facility. It also gives Slate a large enclosed space in which to organize production, storage, shipping, and potentially future expansion. But the savings are not automatic: the company still has to adapt the building to automotive manufacturing requirements and prove that the resulting process can deliver consistent quality at scale.

The plant conversion also fits the vehicle itself. Slate is not launching a broad range of pickups, SUVs, luxury trims, and powertrain variants. Its strategy is based on one relatively simple electric-vehicle platform that begins as a two-seat pickup and can be modified with kits and accessories. A narrower product range could make manufacturing less complex than building many unrelated models, although the company will still need to manage the additional parts and configurations created by its modular approach.

What Slate plans to build

The vehicle is a two-door electric pickup that Slate markets as a configurable platform rather than a conventional trim ladder. The basic truck is called the Blank Slate. Owners are expected to be able to add equipment and change the vehicle’s format after purchase rather than selecting every feature as part of a traditional factory-built trim.

Slate says a vehicle can start as a two-seat pickup and later be adapted into a five-seat SUV or another configuration. Its described options include:

  • the base two-seat pickup;
  • a five-seat SUV conversion;
  • squareback and fastback SUV body styles;
  • an open-air configuration;
  • a cargo-oriented kit;
  • vehicle wraps and appearance changes; and
  • additional accessories for storage, utility, entertainment, and personalization.

This is more than a styling exercise. Slate is trying to make the ownership experience continue after delivery. A customer might buy a basic pickup, use it for a period, and later add rear seats, a different body configuration, or utility equipment as needs change.

How much will the Slate EV truck cost?

Slate’s current official materials list the Blank Slate at $24,950, plus a $1,450 destination charge. The company says its $300 preorder deposit is credited toward the final purchase price.

That current figure should not be confused with earlier launch messaging about an effective price below $20,000 after potential federal incentives. The $24,950 figure is the advertised vehicle price in the current materials; tax credits or other incentives are separate and depend on eligibility, legislation, timing, the buyer’s circumstances, and the vehicle’s final qualification status. A buyer should not assume that the earlier sub-$20,000 claim will apply to every purchase.

Slate also warns that the truck remains a preproduction vehicle and that specifications and pricing may change. The final price could therefore differ from the currently published figure by the time customer deliveries begin.

Slate’s minimalist approach is part of the business model

The truck’s low-cost positioning is tied to a minimalist product philosophy. Instead of filling the vehicle with a large built-in infotainment system and numerous luxury features, Slate’s materials describe simple controls and the use of the owner’s existing devices.

Examples include mounting a phone or tablet in the vehicle and integrating a portable speaker rather than relying on a conventional high-end in-car entertainment system. Slate also emphasizes wraps and add-on equipment, allowing owners to decide which features are worth paying for.

This could help keep the initial vehicle price lower and reduce the number of factory-installed configurations. It also shifts some responsibility to the owner. A buyer who expects a fully equipped, traditional modern pickup may see the approach as a compromise, while someone who values a lower entry price and personalization may see it as an advantage.

The accessory marketplace may be as important as the truck

Slate’s planned Slate accessories marketplace is central to its strategy. The company is not simply selling a fixed vehicle and leaving customization to independent aftermarket companies. It wants to create an ecosystem in which customers can buy conversion kits, wraps, storage products, utility equipment, and other additions over time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The modular concept could give Slate a second commercial opportunity after the initial vehicle sale. It may also let the company appeal to different buyers with one basic platform: a commuter could use the pickup configuration, a family could add the SUV conversion, and a small business could prioritize cargo equipment.

That flexibility comes with practical questions. Slate will need to explain installation requirements, prices, compatibility, warranty coverage, added weight, changes to range, and whether certain conversions must be installed by an approved technician. Body-style changes can affect occupant protection, cargo capacity, vehicle certification, and insurance treatment, so the promise of modularity will need clear implementation rules.

Slate has also invited accessory manufacturers, wrap providers, content partners, and other collaborators to participate in its ecosystem. That creates a possible future market for Slate-compatible accessories, but specific partners, products, compatibility standards, and commercial availability should not be assumed until Slate confirms them.

Direct sales and service are part of the factory story

The Warsaw plant is only one piece of Slate’s operating model. The company describes direct-to-consumer ordering rather than a conventional franchise-dealer strategy, along with a nationwide service approach. That means Slate must build more than an assembly process: it must also support deliveries, parts, software, repairs, warranty claims, and accessory installation across the country.

Slate says it has partnered with RepairPal to help repair shops become familiar with its EVs and to develop a certified service network. In practical terms, a network of Slate-certified service shops could be important because a new automaker will not initially have the physical footprint of established manufacturers.

The service plan remains something to watch rather than a completed nationwide capability. Prospective owners will eventually need to know where high-voltage repairs can be performed, how parts will be supplied, which shops can install conversion kits, how roadside assistance will work, and whether service availability differs by state or region. RepairPal partnership announcements do not by themselves prove that every customer will have a nearby certified location at launch.

When will Slate production begin?

Slate says first deliveries are slated for late 2026. Independent reporting has described a fourth-quarter 2026 production target for the Warsaw site. Those are targets, not evidence that customer vehicles have already entered mass production.

Before treating the date as firm, buyers should look for several concrete milestones:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Plant commissioning: production equipment and supporting systems installed and tested at Warsaw.
  2. Pilot vehicles: preproduction builds completed using the intended manufacturing process.
  3. Validation and compliance: required testing, certification, and regulatory work completed for the final vehicle.
  4. Supplier readiness: battery, drive-unit, body, interior, electronics, and replacement-part supply secured at the needed volume.
  5. Service readiness: trained technicians, diagnostic tools, parts distribution, and customer-support systems available.
  6. Customer deliveries: vehicles shipped to buyers in a repeatable process rather than delivered as isolated early units.

Until those milestones are documented, “preparing for production” is the most accurate description of the Warsaw project.

What is known—and not yet proven—about the truck?

Slate has published projected specifications for the vehicle, but its specifications materials identify the truck as preproduction and caution that details may change. Published range figures are projections rather than official EPA estimates.

That qualification applies to more than range. Battery capacity, charging performance, towing, payload, dimensions, curb weight, equipment, safety results, and pricing should all be treated as company-published or projected information until final production vehicles are tested and certified.

There is a practical reason for caution: changes made during validation or manufacturing preparation can affect range and payload. A larger battery, reinforced structure, different safety equipment, or revised thermal-management system could alter the final vehicle from the early specification. Buyers comparing Slate with established electric pickups should compare final, independently verified figures when they become available—not only the current preproduction targets.

Why the Warsaw project matters for U.S. EV manufacturing

Slate’s factory plan combines several ideas that are unusual when presented together:

  • Domestic production: Slate is positioning Warsaw as the manufacturing center for an American EV program.
  • Adaptive reuse: the company is converting a former printing facility rather than starting with a purpose-built automotive site.
  • A limited product strategy: one core vehicle is intended to serve pickup, SUV, open-air, and cargo use cases.
  • Post-purchase configuration: owners can add capabilities through kits and accessories.
  • Direct commerce: Slate plans to sell the vehicle and related products directly rather than relying entirely on a traditional dealer network.
  • Distributed service: a partner-based repair network is intended to extend support beyond the factory.

If it works, the model could show how a new automaker uses a smaller number of core products and aftermarket revenue opportunities to compete with larger manufacturers. If it does not, the same complexity could become a weakness: every additional body style, kit, and accessory introduces more parts, installation procedures, inventory requirements, and customer-support obligations.

What to watch next

The most important developments will be evidence of execution, not another rendering or revised target. Watch for confirmation that Slate has completed the Warsaw transaction and conversion work, installed production equipment, built pilot vehicles, finalized specifications, published updated pricing, and expanded its service network.

Potential buyers should also watch for the final treatment of federal and state incentives. Slate’s advertised price and any available tax credit are separate questions. Eligibility may depend on the final vehicle, its battery and sourcing details, the buyer’s income and tax situation, and the rules in effect when the vehicle is purchased.

For now, the clearest conclusion is measured: Warsaw is Slate’s announced U.S. manufacturing anchor, and late 2026 is the company’s stated delivery target. The factory conversion, production scale, final vehicle specifications, price, incentive eligibility, and service execution still need to be demonstrated as the program advances.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where will Slate electric trucks be built?

Slate is preparing the former R.R. Donnelley/LSC Communications printing facility in Warsaw, Indiana, for electric-truck production. The company’s materials identify Warsaw as its manufacturing location, but available information does not establish that full-rate production has begun.

When will Slate begin delivering its electric truck?

Slate currently says first deliveries are slated for late 2026. That is a company target, not confirmation that customer deliveries or mass production have already started.

How much will the Slate electric truck cost?

Current official materials list the Blank Slate at $24,950, plus a $1,450 destination charge. Slate says the $300 preorder deposit is credited toward the final purchase price. Earlier claims about an effective price below $20,000 involved potential incentives and should not be treated as the current sticker price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can the Slate truck be converted into an SUV?

Slate says the vehicle can begin as a two-seat pickup and later be adapted with kits into a five-seat SUV or other configurations. It has described squareback and fastback SUV forms, an open-air configuration, a cargo kit, wraps, and other accessories. Final availability, pricing, installation requirements, and compatibility may change.

How will Slate owners get repairs and service?

Slate says it is working with RepairPal to help shops become familiar with its EVs and to develop a certified service network. The existence of that partnership does not yet establish that a nationwide network is fully operational.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Slate Auto is preparing a former R.R. Donnelley/LSC Communications printing facility in Warsaw, Indiana, to build its modular electric pickup. The plan is ambitious because it links a low-cost, simple truck to U.S. production, direct sales, conversion kits, and an aftermarket ecosystem. But as of the latest available information, Warsaw is a production project in preparation—not a confirmed full-rate assembly plant—and late-2026 deliveries remain a target.
