Start with the car you will actually drive
A used petrol-versus-diesel decision is really a journey, access and condition decision. Write down your normal week before looking at adverts:

There is no evidence-based universal mileage break-even point. Fuel prices, vehicle prices and repair bills vary by model, age, mileage and condition, so a rule such as “diesel only pays above a fixed annual mileage” can mislead. Use your real trips and the exact vehicles on your shortlist.

What petrol and diesel engines do differently
Petrol: spark ignition
A petrol engine ignites its air-and-fuel mixture with a spark. The fuel label describes the combustion system, not the quality or condition of a particular used car. Two petrol cars with different engines, gearboxes, weights and maintenance histories can have very different running costs.
Diesel: compression ignition
A diesel engine ignites fuel through compression rather than a spark. That engineering difference affects how each model is designed and calibrated, but it does not by itself prove that a diesel is the better buy. Age, mileage, engine version, transmission, servicing and the way the car has been driven remain decisive.
For either fuel, check the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule, the vehicle’s recorded work and the condition of the individual example. A well-maintained petrol car can be a better purchase than a neglected diesel, and the reverse can also be true.
Match the fuel to your driving pattern
Mostly short urban trips
Short, congested journeys put more weight on cold starts, traffic conditions and local access rules than on a headline laboratory figure. Compare cars that are approved for your routes, then inspect their service records and mechanical condition closely. Do not use a claimed annual-mileage threshold as a substitute for checking the exact car.
Regular longer journeys
Longer, steady runs give you a different comparison from repeated urban hops. Assess each candidate’s official consumption figure, expected fuel use on your routes and the cost of reaching destinations that may have emissions restrictions. The evidence does not establish a single journey length at which diesel always becomes cheaper.
Mixed driving
For a mixed pattern, calculate the share of urban and longer trips instead of relying on a fuel stereotype. A petrol car may simplify access and fuel compatibility checks; a diesel may still suit a particular long-distance user. The exact engine, trim, gearbox and condition decide whether either advantage is meaningful.

Fuel economy and total cost: compare like with like
The Vehicle Certification Agency’s Fuel Consumption Guide reports official test data for new cars currently on the UK market. It is useful for comparing the exact model and version, but it is not a tested result for an older used car and does not guarantee what you will achieve on the road.

When you compare listings, record the complete specification: engine output, fuel type, transmission, body style, wheel size and trim. A model name alone may cover several versions with different official figures.
Build a vehicle-specific cost estimate
- Record official consumption. Use the VCA figure for the exact version, keeping its new-car test status in mind.
- Estimate your fuel volume. Apply that figure to your expected annual distance, then adjust your expectations for traffic, weather, driving style and the car’s age and condition.
- Use current local pump prices. Prices change by region and date; use the prices you would actually pay rather than an old national average.
- Add ownership costs. Include the advertised price, insurance, tax, servicing, tyres, inspection work and a repair reserve for the specific car.
- Compare the total, not fuel alone. A small fuel saving can be outweighed by a higher purchase price or an expensive repair, while a cheaper car can cost more if its history is poor.
No universal used-car repair cost or current fuel-price comparison is established here, so do not treat a generic online calculator as a guaranteed result. Get model-specific quotes and inspect the vehicle before committing.
Clean Air Zones and where the car can go
For cars in English Clean Air Zones, the general standards to avoid a charge are Euro 6 for diesel and Euro 4 for petrol. These are England-wide guidance thresholds, not a complete answer for every UK scheme. London has its own checker and rules, Scotland has separate schemes, and local exemptions or operating details can apply.
Check the registration, not just the advert
- Take the registration number of every car you are considering.
- Use the relevant government vehicle checker for each city or route.
- Confirm the recorded Euro standard and whether a charge applies on the dates and roads you use.
- Check exemptions, grace periods and payment requirements for the specific zone.
- Save the result or confirmation so you can verify the position after purchase.
An advert saying “clean” or “low emission” is not proof of access. A diesel that fails an English zone’s Euro 6 requirement may be inconvenient or costly for a city user, while an older petrol that meets Euro 4 may be easier to use there. Conversely, passing one English CAZ check does not establish eligibility for London or a Scottish scheme.
What the emissions figures do—and do not—tell you
Fuel carbon intensity per litre
The VCA reports 2024 average forecourt-blend carbon intensities of 2.07 kgCO2e per litre for petrol and 2.51 kgCO2e per litre for diesel. These are fuel-per-litre figures for the average blends, reported by the Vehicle Certification Agency in 2024. They are not per-mile results and are not a complete lifecycle assessment.

To compare journeys, you would also need the actual amount of fuel each car consumes, plus the effects of vehicle manufacture, maintenance and use. A litre figure alone cannot establish a whole-car climate winner.
Air pollutants are a separate question
The VCA states: “The emission of air pollutants are not solely dependent on fuel consumption.” Driving style, driving conditions and ambient temperature also affect air pollutants. That is why a fuel-economy number should not be treated as a complete air-quality assessment.
Keep three ideas separate when reading specifications:
- Tailpipe air pollutants: relevant to local air quality and zone rules.
- Fuel carbon intensity: expressed per litre in the VCA figures above.
- Emissions per distance or over a lifecycle: dependent on consumption, distance, vehicle and wider assumptions.
E10 petrol: compatibility before economy
GOV.UK guidance says E10 petrol can reduce fuel economy by around 1%. The same guidance says around 95% of petrol-powered vehicles on the road are compatible, and all cars manufactured since 2011 are compatible. The figures come from Department for Transport guidance published on 25 February 2021 and last updated 2 November 2022.
Compatibility is the important check for an older used petrol car. Use the official vehicle checker, the handbook or the manufacturer’s guidance. Do not assume that a registration year, badge or seller’s description proves compatibility. If the car is approved for E10, the expected economy effect is small; if it is not, use the fuel specified by the manufacturer and factor availability and cost into your decision.

A repeatable buying process
Step 1: Define the use case
List your regular routes, annual distance, passengers, load, parking and required destinations. Mark journeys that enter an emissions zone.
Step 2: Shortlist exact versions
For each petrol and diesel candidate, record the engine, gearbox, trim, registration year, Euro standard and official VCA consumption figure. Keep different versions in separate rows; do not merge them under one model name.
Step 3: Verify access
Run the registration through every relevant English, London or Scottish checker before travelling to view the car. A passing result for one scheme does not transfer automatically to another.
Step 4: Verify fuel requirements
For petrol cars, confirm E10 compatibility through an official checker, handbook or manufacturer. For either fuel, note the manufacturer’s recommended grade and servicing requirements.

Step 6: Inspect and test
Check the history, body and interior, then arrange a cold start and road test. Walk away or renegotiate if the seller cannot explain missing records, warning lights or inconsistent mileage.
Step 7: Decide on evidence
Choose the car whose verified access, condition, expected use and total cost fit your circumstances—not the fuel type that sounds cheapest in general.
How the decision changes by buyer
The city commuter
Prioritise zone eligibility, route restrictions and the condition of cars used in frequent stop-start traffic. Check the registration with the exact local scheme. An eligible petrol car may be the simpler shortlist if an otherwise attractive diesel cannot enter your destinations, but compare the actual vehicles rather than assuming this outcome.

Compare exact official figures and annual fuel volume, then check whether the car’s Euro status covers every destination. A diesel may appear attractive for a long-distance pattern, but the evidence does not support a universal savings threshold. Purchase price, maintenance and condition can reverse the result.
The occasional driver
Low annual use reduces the importance of a theoretical fuel saving and increases the importance of purchase price, reliability evidence, fuel age and route access. Calculate the cost of the trips you really make instead of extrapolating from a high-mileage example.
The older-car buyer
Verify E10 compatibility for petrol examples and emissions-zone status for both fuels. Inspect history and corrosion, check advisories and reserve money for age-related repairs. A newer registration alone does not prove condition.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using one mileage rule. No universal used-car break-even mileage is established.
- Reading a new-car test as a used-car promise. VCA figures are official new-car test data.
- Confusing per-litre carbon intensity with per-mile emissions. Consumption and distance are required for a journey comparison.
- Assuming every clean-air scheme is the same. English CAZ guidance does not settle London or Scottish rules.
- Assuming all petrol cars take E10. Check older vehicles through an official source.
- Ignoring condition. Service history, repairs and inspection findings belong to the individual car.
- Comparing badges instead of specifications. Engine, transmission, trim and wheels can change official consumption.
Buyer’s comparison checklist
- Have I written down my actual short, urban and longer journeys?
- Have I checked every required route for charges and exemptions?
- Do I know the exact engine, gearbox, trim, Euro standard and official consumption figure?
- Have I confirmed E10 compatibility for an older petrol car?
- Have I used current local fuel prices rather than an outdated estimate?
- Have I budgeted for insurance, tax, servicing, tyres and repairs?
- Does the service history match the mileage and condition?
- Have I viewed, cold-started and road-tested the exact car?
- Is the decision based on total ownership fit rather than the fuel badge?
The practical verdict
Buy the used petrol or diesel car that best matches your routes and survives verification. A petrol car is often the easier starting point when E10 compatibility and urban access are straightforward; a diesel can still be appropriate when a particular, well-maintained example fits a longer-distance pattern and all required zones. Neither conclusion is automatic.
Use the VCA’s figures as a comparison input, not a guarantee; treat the 2024 fuel carbon intensities as per-litre values, not a complete climate verdict; and check every registration against the zones you actually use. The strongest choice is the exact vehicle with acceptable access, documented condition and a total cost that works for your driving.
