Toyota vs. Subaru Reliability: Which Used Car Is Easier and Cheaper to Maintain?

Toyota leads Subaru in 2026 brand-level used-car reliability and maintenance-cost rankings, but the best purchase depends on the specific model year, records, condition, and inspection.

At the brand level, Toyota is the better bet for a used car that is easier and less expensive to maintain. Consumer Reports’ 2026 used-car rankings place Toyota second for reliability and third for maintenance and repair cost, while Subaru ranks 12th and 20th, respectively. RepairPal likewise reports lower average annual repair and maintenance spending for Toyota: $441 versus $617 for Subaru.

Those are useful starting points, not a guarantee about two individual cars. Model, model year, mileage, service history, condition, powertrain, and local labor rates can outweigh the badge on the hood. A carefully maintained Subaru can be a better purchase than a neglected Toyota, so use the brand averages to set expectations and the vehicle-specific inspection to make the final decision.

The short answer: Toyota wins the brand-level comparison

If you are choosing between otherwise similar used Toyota and Subaru vehicles, the available 2026 data favors Toyota for both reliability and maintenance cost. Consumer Reports ranks Toyota higher in its used-car reliability and maintenance-and-repair-cost categories. RepairPal’s brand averages show Toyota costing $176 less per year in combined scheduled maintenance and unscheduled repairs.

What the reliability and cost numbers actually measure

Consumer Reports separates used-car and new-car information

Consumer Reports presents used-car reliability and maintenance-and-repair-cost rankings separately from its new-car rankings. A new-car ranking, including one marked with an asterisk on a brand page, should not be treated as evidence about used-car reliability or operating cost. The used-car figures are the relevant comparison for a pre-owned purchase.

A brand rank is an aggregate position across the vehicles and model years represented in that brand’s data. It does not say that every Toyota is more reliable than every Subaru, nor does it identify the best or worst model year. Treat it as a probability signal for a shopping shortlist, not as a mechanical diagnosis.

RepairPal’s rating is more than a breakdown count

RepairPal says its reliability rating combines three elements: repair cost, repair frequency, and repair severity. Its annual-cost figure includes both scheduled maintenance and unscheduled repairs. The severe-repair percentage refers to the probability of a major repair under RepairPal’s stated threshold, which is tied to three times the average annual repair cost for all models.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That explains why Toyota and Subaru can show the same 0.3 unscheduled repair visits per year while still receiving different ratings and annual-cost averages. Frequency alone does not tell you whether the visits are inexpensive maintenance items or a less common but costly repair.

Why the brand averages cannot choose between two individual cars

Brand statistics smooth together very different vehicles. A low-mileage car with complete records and a clean inspection may have a much lower near-term risk than a higher-ranked brand car that has missed services, suffered accident damage, or spent years in severe conditions.

The exact model and model year matter because equipment, engines, transmissions, electronics, and factory revisions change over time. Mileage matters because wear items and age-related failures accumulate. Service history shows whether the previous owner followed the required maintenance. Condition reveals what the car needs now. Local parts availability and labor rates determine what a repair will cost in your area.

Consequently, the right conclusion is conditional: Toyota has the stronger average starting point, but a well-documented, well-inspected Subaru can be the lower-risk purchase when the competing Toyota has poor records or deferred work.

How to compare a specific used Toyota and Subaru

1. Define the exact vehicles before comparing the badges

Write down the model, model year, engine or hybrid system, transmission, drive system, mileage, asking price, and location for each candidate. “Toyota versus Subaru” is too broad for a repair estimate. You need two identifiable vehicles and their powertrains.

Keep the comparison fair. A much older vehicle, a large mileage gap, or a substantially different equipment level can explain a cost difference that has nothing to do with the manufacturer.

2. Gather service records and verify what is missing

Ask for invoices, maintenance-book entries, inspection reports, and ownership records. Look for dated evidence of routine services and any major repairs. A seller’s statement that a car was “regularly serviced” is less useful than receipts showing what was done and when.

  • Check whether the maintenance history covers the full period of ownership or has long unexplained gaps.
  • Match recorded work to the requirements in the owner’s manual for that exact model year and powertrain.
  • Separate completed repairs from recommendations that were never performed.
  • Budget for any overdue service as an immediate ownership cost, not as an optional future item.

The available brand data does not provide official maintenance intervals for every Toyota or Subaru. Use the applicable owner’s manual rather than a generic internet schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Research reliability at the model-year level

After using the brand rankings to set expectations, check reliability information for the precise model year. Consumer Reports explains its reliability methodology in its car reliability FAQ. The relevant question is whether the specific year has a stronger or weaker record than the brand average, not whether the logo is generally well regarded.

  • 【ENHANCED OBD2 SCANNER WITH LIVE DATA & RETRIEVE FREEZE FRAME】 - This diagnostic scan tool for accurate diagnosis enables you to retrieve data from vehicle sensors, such as Engine RPM, Intake air temperature, Short/Long term fuel, Misfire data and etc. The freeze frame is stored in the PCM together with the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) related to the fault. Comparable to a fixd car diagnostic tool, the VD10 car code reader car scanner can be a valuable & practical diagnostic aid and also greatly help when diagnosing intermittent problems.
  • 【I/M READINESS for THE S-nn-0-g CHECK】- OBDII vehicle may not pass the annual inspection unless the required monitors since reset are complete. So you should at least read the readiness monitors and make sure they are ready. This car obd2 scanner diagnostic tool is equipped with I/M readiness function to check the operations of the e-m-issi0n system on OBD2 compliant vehicles, run I/M monitor readiness test, checking if the pass vehicle s-m-0-g inspection.

Pay particular attention to repeated problem areas that could affect your candidate’s engine, transmission, electrical systems, cooling system, suspension, or safety equipment. A documented repair that has already been completed is different from a known issue that is still developing; an inspection can help distinguish the two.

4. Price scheduled maintenance for the next ownership period

Make a 12- to 24-month maintenance forecast from the manual and the car’s current mileage. Include routine services that are due by time or distance, plus age-related items that the records do not document. Obtain local estimates from independent shops for each item.

Do not apply RepairPal’s $441 or $617 averages as a personal bill. They are brand-level annual averages across model ranges. Your first year can be higher if a large scheduled service is due, or lower if the previous owner just completed it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Inspect wear, leaks, tires, brakes, and warning indicators

A pre-purchase inspection by an independent qualified mechanic is the most direct way to learn whether the individual vehicle matches the brand-level expectation. Ask for a written report with photographs or measurements where appropriate, not only a verbal “looks good.”

  • Confirm that the engine starts cleanly from cold and reaches normal operating behavior.
  • Look for fluid leaks, damaged hoses, corrosion, unusual noises, and signs of overheating.
  • Assess tire age and tread, brake condition, suspension components, and steering response.
  • Check that all warning lights illuminate during the self-test and then go out as expected.
  • Review evidence of accident repair, flood exposure, structural rust, or inconsistent panel alignment.

The inspection does not guarantee future reliability, but it can identify deferred work that a brand average cannot see.

6. Use an OBD-II scan only as a supplement

A basic OBD-II scanner can be a tentative screening tool for diagnostic trouble codes, but the information available here does not establish the capabilities or compatibility of any particular scanner. A scan cannot prove that a car is healthy, reveal every mechanical problem, or replace a qualified inspection. A seller may also have cleared codes recently, so interpret a clean scan alongside readiness monitors, records, a road test, and the mechanic’s report.

Then you don’t need to pay extra money to buy a solid toolbox.

7. Add local labor and parts prices

RepairPal’s averages are not regional quotes. Call two or three reputable independent shops in the area where you will own the car and ask for estimates on the services your forecast identifies. Local labor rates, taxes, parts availability, and shop specialization can change the total substantially.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also ask whether the shop routinely works on the exact model and powertrain. Familiarity can reduce diagnostic time and make an otherwise similar repair more predictable.

8. Make the decision with a first-year budget

Build a simple comparison for each car:

  1. Purchase price and taxes.
  2. Immediate repairs identified by the inspection.
  3. Scheduled maintenance due within your ownership horizon.
  4. A reserve for unscheduled repairs.
  5. Local estimates for labor and parts.

Choose the vehicle with the lower risk-adjusted total, not automatically the one with the lower asking price. If the Subaru has complete records, a clean inspection, and recently completed major maintenance while the Toyota needs several overdue services, the Subaru may be financially wiser despite Toyota’s stronger averages.

Understanding the cost difference in practical terms

Scheduled maintenance

Scheduled maintenance is predictable when the vehicle’s history and manual-based intervals are known. It includes recurring services required by time, mileage, or operating conditions. The RepairPal annual averages include this category, so they are not pure measures of unexpected failure.

Unscheduled repairs

Unscheduled repairs are work that arises outside the planned service schedule. RepairPal reports 0.3 unscheduled repair-shop visits per year for both Toyota and Subaru in the cited ratings. That equal figure means you should not assume Toyota owners visit shops dramatically less often; the reported advantage is clearer in average cost, rating, and severe-repair probability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Severe repairs

RepairPal reports a 12% severe-repair probability for Toyota and 13% for Subaru. The one-percentage-point difference is modest, and it is a brand-level probability rather than a forecast for your car. A vehicle’s maintenance history and inspection findings are more actionable than treating the percentages as a guarantee.

Deferred maintenance at purchase

The largest first-year surprise often comes from work that a previous owner postponed. Worn tires, brakes, fluids, belts, suspension parts, leaks, or unresolved warning lights can make a low-priced car expensive immediately. Add documented deferred work to the purchase calculation before deciding that one brand is cheaper.

How to use Consumer Reports and RepairPal without overreading them

Use Consumer Reports for the broad reliability direction

The 2026 Consumer Reports pages put Toyota second in used-car reliability and Subaru 12th. For maintenance and repair cost, Toyota is third and Subaru 20th. This supports starting your search with Toyota when ease and cost are the primary goals.

Consumer Reports also publishes new-car reliability coverage, including the overview Who Makes the Most Reliable New Cars?. Do not substitute those new-car positions for the used-car rankings. Different data sets answer different ownership questions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use RepairPal to understand cost, frequency, and severity together

RepairPal’s 2026 figures give Toyota a 4.0 out of 5.0 reliability rating and eighth place among 32 brands, compared with Subaru’s 3.5 rating and 14th place. The reported annual averages are $441 for Toyota and $617 for Subaru. Because the rating incorporates cost, frequency, and severity, it should be read as a combined indicator rather than a simple breakdown tally.

The $176 annual difference is meaningful as a directional average, but it is not a promise that every Toyota owner saves exactly $176 each year. A single major repair can exceed several years of average difference, while a well-maintained individual car may spend less than either figure.

Decision guide for common shopping situations

Your situation Better default Reasoning
Two similar cars, similar mileage, complete records, and clean inspections Toyota The brand-level reliability and cost data favor Toyota.
Toyota has gaps in records; Subaru has complete documentation and a clean inspection Subaru may be the safer purchase Vehicle-specific evidence can outweigh an aggregate brand rank.
Both cars need immediate repairs The one with the lower documented repair total Use local written estimates and include overdue maintenance in the budget.
You cannot obtain records or an independent inspection Wait or keep shopping Neither brand statistic can compensate for unknown condition.
You want the lowest expected routine ownership cost across a broad search Toyota RepairPal and Consumer Reports both show Toyota ahead on average cost measures.

Questions to ask before signing

  • Can the seller provide service records covering the car’s ownership history?
  • Which maintenance items are due now according to the exact owner’s manual?
  • May an independent mechanic inspect the car before purchase?
  • What repairs or warning lights have been addressed recently?
  • What are the local estimates for the next scheduled service and any inspection findings?
  • Does the purchase price still make sense after immediate repairs and a reserve for unexpected work?

Final verdict

Toyota is the stronger brand-level answer to “which used car is easier and cheaper to maintain?” Its 2026 Consumer Reports ranks are higher for used-car reliability and maintenance and repair cost, and RepairPal reports a higher reliability rating, lower average annual cost, and slightly lower severe-repair probability. The reported annual unscheduled visit rate is equal, so Toyota’s edge is primarily the lower combined cost and stronger overall ranking rather than dramatically fewer shop visits.

For an actual purchase, compare the exact model years and powertrains, verify maintenance records, price upcoming services locally, and pay for an independent pre-purchase inspection. Buy the better-documented, better-maintained individual car; use Toyota’s favorable averages as the tie-breaker when the candidates are otherwise comparable.
