Toyota and Lexus owners are seeing proposed class-action litigation alleging defects in certain UA80 eight-speed automatic transmissions, torque converters and control software. The central pleading identified for this coverage is the LeBoutheller complaint, filed December 12, 2025, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas.
The complaint describes plaintiffs’ allegations, not a court finding. A separate July 6, 2026 report discussed several proposed cases and said no class had been certified, no settlement had been approved and no claim form was available at that time. That dated report is not a verified September 2026 docket update.

What the Toyota transmission lawsuit is about
The litigation targets certain Toyota and Lexus vehicles said to use the UA80 eight-speed transmission family. Plaintiffs allege that a mechanical design problem can create excessive heat, burn transmission fluid and cause premature wear that may lead to transmission failure. They also allege that transmission software commands early upshifts and torque-converter-clutch engagement, increasing deterioration.
The LeBoutheller complaint further alleges that the claimed condition can produce drivability and safety risks, including possible stalling. Those are allegations made in a pleading; they have not been proven in court.

Which case does the headline refer to?
LeBoutheller complaint
The most detailed case identified for this topic is the LeBoutheller complaint filed on December 12, 2025 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. It proposes a class action concerning specified Toyota and Lexus vehicles, model years and transmission configurations covered by that pleading. The complaint also reserves the possibility of amendment, so its proposed class definition is not the same thing as a final, court-approved class.
Other proposed cases
OpenClassActions reported on July 6, 2026 that several proposed UA80 cases were pending or had been filed. A related first amended complaint reproduced by ClassAction.org discusses UA80/UB80 allegations involving Toyota Highlander and Sienna vehicles. CarComplaints.com separately reported on February 17, 2026 about models discussed in related litigation. These sources should not be merged into one definitive vehicle list: each pleading controls its own proposed class.

Vehicles and transmissions mentioned in the pleadings
| Source or pleading | Transmission reference | Vehicles or scope described | How to use the information |
|---|---|---|---|
| LeBoutheller complaint, filed Dec. 12, 2025 | UA80 eight-speed automatic | Toyota and Lexus vehicles identified in that complaint; the proposed model-year and configuration limits are case-specific | Use the actual complaint and your VIN, model year and drivetrain to test possible overlap |
| Murphy first amended complaint, reproduced by ClassAction.org | UA80/UB80 | Toyota Highlander and Sienna allegations are discussed | This is a different pleading and does not automatically expand the LeBoutheller class |
| CarComplaints.com report, Feb. 17, 2026 | Related transmission litigation | Additional Toyota and Lexus model lists are reported | A secondary list is not a court-certified class definition |
Because the cases use different pleadings, a vehicle appearing in a news article or another complaint is not automatically included in every case. Check the named case, complaint or amendment date, model year, drivetrain and transmission code before assuming eligibility.

The July 6, 2026 OpenClassActions summary said that the proposed cases it described had no certified class, no approved settlement and no claim form at the time of publication. That is a dated secondary-source snapshot, not a current status determination for every related docket as of September 2026.

Class certification, settlement approval and any claim process occur case by case. Until a court enters an order and, if applicable, a settlement administrator publishes instructions, an owner should not assume that a claim can be filed or that compensation is available. Verify the latest docket and any official court or administrator notice for the specific case before submitting information or paying anyone.
How to check whether your Toyota may fit a proposed class
- Identify the exact vehicle: record the VIN, model year, trim, drivetrain and transmission designation shown in service records or manufacturer documentation.
- Match the pleading: compare those details with the proposed class definition in the complaint or amended complaint for the particular case. Do not rely on a combined list from multiple websites.
- Confirm the case and date: note the court, case name or number, and the complaint or amendment date. Definitions can change when a pleading is amended.
- Check official status: look for a court order certifying a class, approving a settlement or directing notice. A news summary alone does not create a claim process.
- Use the VIN for coverage questions: ask Toyota or Lexus, or an authorized dealer, whether your vehicle has any VIN-specific warranty extension, service campaign or other coverage. Lawsuit allegations do not establish manufacturer coverage.
What to do if your transmission is acting up or has failed
Put safety first
If the vehicle stalls, loses drive, shifts unpredictably or cannot be driven safely, stop operating it and arrange appropriate towing. The allegations in a complaint are not a diagnosis of any individual vehicle.

Obtain a vehicle-specific diagnosis
Have a qualified technician or dealer evaluate the vehicle for the actual cause. Ask for the diagnostic trouble codes, test results, fluid and component findings, and the technician’s written conclusion. A transmission problem can have causes unrelated to the allegations in these cases.
Preserve records
- Keep repair orders, estimates, invoices and towing receipts.
- Save maintenance records and note mileage, dates, warning lights and what the vehicle did.
- Keep communications with dealers, Toyota or Lexus customer service, insurers and lenders.
- Photograph dashboard warnings and retain replaced parts when practical and lawful.
Ask about available coverage
Request a VIN-specific coverage review from the manufacturer or dealer. The materials summarized for this article do not establish a universal repair, fluid, additive or software update that resolves every alleged condition, and buying a product does not establish lawsuit eligibility.

What the lawsuit does not establish
- It does not establish that Toyota or Lexus has been found liable.
- It does not show that every named model or every UA80-equipped vehicle is defective.
- It does not prove that a recall exists.
- It does not guarantee reimbursement, a replacement transmission or a settlement payment.
- It does not diagnose an individual owner’s vehicle.
The practical answer for an owner is therefore case-specific: identify the exact vehicle and transmission, obtain a qualified diagnosis, preserve evidence and verify any official court or manufacturer notice rather than relying on a generalized “Toyota transmission class action” label.
