The “leaked” 2026 Subaru Forester Wilderness is no longer a leak. Subaru of America officially announced it on February 6, 2025, and said the SUV would reach U.S. retailers in fall 2025. Its redesigned grille and lamps, black protective cladding, copper accents and distinctive 17-inch wheels give it a handsome, purpose-built look—an editorial judgment backed by unusually functional hardware.
Subaru’s published specifications point to a more capable Wilderness rather than a cosmetic package: 9.3 inches of ground clearance, revised suspension and gearing, all-terrain tires, dual-mode X-MODE, improved approach and departure geometry, and a 3,500-pound tow rating.

What changed for the 2026 Forester Wilderness?
Subaru’s February 2025 announcement describes a substantial update to the Wilderness trim. The company says the 2026 model uses a revised 2.5-liter boxer engine, revised CVT final-drive gearing, an uprated transmission cooler, suspension changes and more protective trail equipment. The current 2026 Forester Wilderness features page repeats the 9.3-inch clearance figure.

The angle and clearance comparisons are Subaru’s published specifications, not results from an independent obstacle course or instrumented test. Real-world traction, ride quality, fuel consumption and trail behavior still depend on tires, load, weather and driver technique.

Trail hardware and drivetrain
Symmetrical AWD and X-MODE
All 2026 Forester Wilderness models use Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. Subaru also specifies dual-mode X-MODE, intended to tailor low-speed traction control for different loose or slippery surfaces. The system is a traction aid, not a substitute for recovery equipment, suitable tires or prudent line choice.
Clearance, protection and tires
The Wilderness rides at 9.3 inches of ground clearance. Subaru lists all-terrain Yokohama Geolandar tires, underbody protection and a revised suspension among the standard trail-focused equipment. Those parts address common crossover weak points—sidewall vulnerability, exposed underbody components and limited clearance—without making the Forester a body-on-frame truck.
Towing
Subaru rates the 2026 Wilderness for up to 3,500 pounds of towing capacity and says the uprated transmission cooler supports that maximum. The actual allowable trailer weight can depend on trailer equipment, tongue weight, occupants and other limits, so owners should verify the vehicle’s certification label and manual before towing.

How the roof-load rating works
The Wilderness roof rails are rated at 800 pounds static and 176 pounds dynamic, according to Subaru’s launch material. “Static” means the vehicle is stationary—for example, when supporting a rooftop tent at camp. It is not a safe driving-load rating. The 176-pound dynamic figure is the rating that applies while the Forester is moving, and it must include the carrier, tent, boards or other gear plus its mounting hardware.
Cabin, cargo and everyday utility
Subaru equips the Wilderness with water-resistant StarTex upholstery, all-weather floor mats, a cargo tray, a full-size spare tire and a front-view monitor. The rear seatbacks split 60/40, and Subaru quotes up to 69.1 cubic feet of cargo volume with the seats folded. Published rear legroom is 39.4 inches.

What does the 2026 Forester Wilderness cost?
Subaru’s August 28, 2025 pricing release says the Wilderness option package costs $2,200, but the captured pricing table does not state the Wilderness trim’s base MSRP. Do not use the regular Forester base price as the Wilderness price. For the current figure, check Subaru’s live pricing tool or obtain a written quote from a U.S. dealer; taxes, destination charges and regional fees can change the transaction total.

Is the 2026 Wilderness genuinely off-road ready?
On paper, it is one of the more trail-oriented compact crossovers: it combines generous clearance, useful approach and departure angles, all-terrain tires, underbody protection, a low-speed traction mode and a 3,500-pound tow rating. The independent evidence needed to rank it against rivals—measured wheel articulation, braking and acceleration on specific surfaces, cabin noise, fuel economy and long-term durability—is not provided by Subaru’s specifications.

The Forester Wilderness is best understood as a factory-prepared crossover for forest roads, snow, mud, ruts and moderate technical terrain, with normal-road practicality retained. Buyers planning repeated rock-crawling, deep-water crossings or heavy towing should compare axle, recovery, payload and cooling requirements rather than relying on clearance and marketing language alone.
