‘The Trend Is Clear’: How EVs Are Closing In on Gas-Car Prices in 2026

EV prices are converging with gasoline cars, but parity depends on segment, country and total ownership costs. Here is what 2026 transaction data shows.

Electric vehicles are not universally the same price as gasoline cars yet, but the gap is narrowing. In the United States, the average new-EV transaction price was $55,879 in September 2026—about 11% above the average for internal-combustion and hybrid vehicles, down from roughly 18% in 2025. Falling battery costs, manufacturer discounts and more affordable models are driving the convergence, while large SUVs, pickups and long-range versions still keep many EVs expensive.

Whether an EV is cheaper for you depends on the specific body style, incentives, charging access, insurance, maintenance and how long you keep it—not an industry-wide average.

Are EVs finally the same price as gas cars?

Not across the market. EV prices are closing in on gasoline-car prices, but US buyers still pay a premium on average and fewer than one in five available EV models were priced below the approximately $40,000 median price paid for an ICE vehicle in 2024 and 2025.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) describes upfront price as an ongoing barrier to wider adoption. At the same time, its sales-weighted data shows a nearly 2% decline in the average US battery-electric retail price during 2025. The direction is clear: parity is becoming more common in certain segments, not universal.

How much more does an electric car cost in the United States in 2026?

Kelley Blue Book and Cox Automotive data show a substantially smaller premium than in 2025.

Measure EV result Comparison and qualification
Average transaction price, September 2026 $55,879 11% above ICE+ vehicles; EV price was 3% lower year over year
Average EV transaction price, August 2026 $54,754 All-new-vehicle average was $50,089
Average EV premium in 2025 About 18% Kelley Blue Book comparison cited in 2026
Lower-priced examples $26,000–$35,000 starting price, including destination Examples cited by Kelley Blue Book include the Nissan Leaf, Chevrolet Bolt and Chevrolet Equinox

These are transaction or starting-price figures, not a promise that every trim sells at that level. As Cox Automotive executive analyst Erin Keating puts it, “Consumers don’t buy the industry average. They buy a vehicle, and prices for many of the vehicles they’re shopping are continuing to move higher.”

Why are EV prices falling while some electric cars still cost more?

Several forces are moving in opposite directions.

  • Cheaper batteries: Lower battery-cell prices reduce one of an EV’s largest costs.
  • Pricing and discounts: Automakers have adjusted list prices and incentives as competition increases. Transaction prices capture those discounts more accurately than stickers.
  • Manufacturing savings: Non-battery production efficiencies and newer affordable models are lowering costs.
  • Vehicle mix: Larger batteries, luxury equipment, SUVs and pickups raise the average. Those mix changes can conceal savings in smaller cars.

The IEA found that battery-electric SUVs and small cars drove much of the 2025 affordability improvement. Across the markets it covered, the average EV premium fell to around 20%, and more than 30% of EV sales were priced below their average ICE equivalent.

Which affordable EVs are under $40,000?

Fewer than 20% of available US EV models had a base price below the roughly $40,000 median ICE price paid in 2024 and 2025, compared with more than 40% of ICE models. Kelley Blue Book’s 2026 examples place some entry models in the $26,000-to-$35,000 range including destination, but availability, trim, destination charges and dealer pricing vary.

Compare an entry EV with a similarly sized gasoline hatchback, sedan or crossover. A long-range, all-wheel-drive electric SUV is not a fair comparison with a base gasoline compact. Check usable range, standard equipment and charging capability alongside the base price.

Are EVs the same price as gas cars in other countries?

Global medians can look closer than US averages, but geography matters.

  • Worldwide, the median price paid for a battery-electric vehicle in 2024 was about $24,000—approximately $700 below the median ICE price, according to the IEA.
  • China had about 30% of BEV models below $20,000 in 2025, still roughly 10 percentage points below the ICE share at that threshold.
  • In Europe, about 25% of ICE models were below $30,000, versus fewer than 10% of BEV models.

These figures include different taxes, markups, model mixes and consumer incentives by market. The IEA’s published prices include VAT, purchase taxes and dealer markups but exclude purchase subsidies, registration taxes, rebates and dealer discounts.

What does an apples-to-apples EV versus gas-car comparison include?

Start with the same size and body style, then compare the price actually paid and the cost of keeping the vehicle.

Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
  • CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.

  1. Match the vehicles: Compare base trim with base trim, similar range, drivetrain and equipment.
  2. Use transaction prices: Include current incentives and dealer discounts rather than relying only on MSRP.
  3. Calculate energy: Estimate home electricity, public charging and gasoline prices for your annual mileage. A Level 2 home EV charger can reduce charging time and make off-peak electricity practical, but installation cost, electrical capacity and vehicle compatibility must be checked.
  4. Add maintenance and repairs: EVs generally have fewer routine powertrain services, but specialized parts and labor can cost more when repairs are needed.
  5. Price insurance: Kelley Blue Book says EV insurance can potentially cost 49% more than coverage for a comparable gas vehicle.
  6. Include depreciation and financing: Interest, taxes, registration, expected resale value and your holding period can outweigh fuel savings.

Kelley Blue Book reports that new EVs can lose 35% to 40% of their value in the first year and retain roughly 45% to 50% after five years, depending in part on battery warranty. Those are broad estimates, so obtain an insurance quote and a model-specific resale estimate before buying.

Are used EVs cheaper than new gas cars?

A used EV may offer a lower entry price than its original sticker, but the used-EV market was not cheaper than the overall used-car market in the cited 2026 data. Average used-EV listings were $37,441 versus $27,239 for all used vehicles, and Kelley Blue Book said used EVs still carried a 7.8% premium over other ICE+ vehicles in August.

Rapid early depreciation can nevertheless create value for a second owner. Chris Hardesty, Kelley Blue Book’s senior advice editor, says EVs “can depreciate quickly, which can make a lightly used EV a great value for the second owner.” Check remaining battery coverage, charging history, accident records and local service capability before purchasing.

What should you do before deciding?

  • Set a purchase-price ceiling and identify comparable gasoline models.
  • Get written insurance quotes for both powertrains.
  • Confirm whether home charging is possible and estimate installation requirements.
  • Calculate annual energy, maintenance, financing and depreciation costs for your expected ownership period.
  • Check regional incentives separately from the vehicle’s advertised price; subsidies and tax rules are not included in the IEA’s list-price comparisons.

The practical conclusion is segment-specific: EVs are approaching gasoline-car pricing fastest among smaller and more affordable models, while large, high-range vehicles remain farther away. A lower transaction premium can help, but total ownership cost determines whether the switch saves you money.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will EV prices keep falling after 2026?

Battery costs and new-model competition could continue to improve affordability, but larger batteries, bigger vehicles and changing incentives can offset those gains. No single forecast applies to every segment or country.

How do I compare an EV lease with buying a gas car?

Compare the lease’s total payments, fees, mileage allowance and end-of-term charges with the gasoline car’s financing cost and expected resale value. Include electricity, fuel, insurance and maintenance over the same months.

Does public charging eliminate the savings from an EV?

It can reduce or erase the energy-cost advantage when frequent fast charging is expensive. Drivers who can charge mainly at home, particularly during lower-rate periods, usually have more predictable operating costs.

What battery information should I request when buying a used EV?

Ask for remaining battery-warranty coverage, a documented state-of-health reading if available, recall completion and the vehicle’s maximum charging rate. These details affect usable range and future repair risk.
