Yes—but only in the enthusiast sense. Nissan’s S15 Silvia Spec-R delivered a 250 PS turbocharged engine, rear-wheel drive, a close-ratio six-speed manual and a light 1,240 kg body. That combination made it dramatically less complex and generally lower-positioned than the R34 Skyline GT-R, while still offering serious pace and adjustable handling. The GT-R remained the faster, more sophisticated machine overall, with 280 PS, twin turbochargers, ATTESA E-TS Pro all-wheel drive, larger Brembo brakes and a manufacturer-quoted 5.2-second 0-62 mph time. The Silvia’s advantage was balance: less mass, simpler hardware and a chassis that became a favorite for drifting and track work.
What was the S15 Nissan Silvia Spec-R?
The S15 was the seventh-generation Silvia, launched by Nissan on January 19, 1999. Production continued until 2002, and the final Silvia was offered primarily in Japan, Australia and New Zealand. Nissan positioned it as a compact sports coupe rather than a flagship performance car, but the top Spec-R gave the platform the engine, gearbox and chassis equipment enthusiasts wanted.

The manual Spec-R used Nissan’s 1,998 cc SR20DET inline-four with an intercooler and turbocharger. Nissan rated it at 250 PS and 28.0 kg-m of torque. A close-ratio six-speed manual sent power to the rear wheels, and Nissan stated that the combination achieved a power-to-weight ratio of less than 5 kg/PS.
That formula explains the car’s reputation. The Spec-R was not built around all-wheel-drive electronics or a large-displacement engine. It relied on low mass, a responsive rear-drive layout, limited-slip traction and a reinforced chassis to make its speed usable on a road or circuit.

How much power and performance did the manual Spec-R have?
The headline figure is 250 PS from the intercooled SR20DET. Nissan’s specification for the manual car lists a 1,240 kg curb weight, giving the coupe a very favorable power-to-weight ratio. Power output alone does not make it an R34 GT-R substitute, but the Silvia’s lower mass helped it feel immediate and agile.

The six-speed used close ratios and triple-cone synchronizers in first, second and third gears. Those details matter because they support quick, controlled shifts rather than merely adding an extra ratio for marketing. The manual gearbox also helped the driver keep the turbocharged four-cylinder in its useful rev range.
What equipment made a Spec-R different from a Spec-S?
Spec-S and Spec-R were not simply two power levels. They represented different mechanical packages within the Japanese S15 range.
Spec-S
The Spec-S used the naturally aspirated SR20DE. It was available with a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. Its engine, brakes and chassis equipment were less performance-oriented than the turbocharged Spec-R’s package.
Spec-R
The Spec-R combined the SR20DET with a six-speed manual, additional body and suspension reinforcement, a stiffer chassis setup and larger braking hardware. Nissan specified opposed four-piston front calipers, ventilated front discs and rear discs. A helical limited-slip differential was fitted on qualifying manual cars with the applicable 16-inch configuration.

A four-speed automatic was also available for the Spec-R. Do not apply the manual car’s 250 PS figure to every automatic example. Toyota GAZOO’s October 1999 catalog entry for a Spec-R b Package automatic lists 225 PS and a 1,270 kg curb weight.

Why do enthusiasts compare the S15 with the R34 Skyline GT-R?
The comparison comes from overlapping performance credibility, not identical engineering. Both are Japanese turbocharged coupes from the same era, both use six-speed manuals in their most desirable configurations, and both became icons of tuning and motorsport culture. The Silvia offered a much lighter rear-drive platform, while the GT-R represented Nissan’s high-technology performance flagship.

The GT-R had two additional cylinders, twin turbochargers, electronically managed torque distribution and substantially larger brakes. Its 1,666 kg kerb weight also shows why the cars deliver different sensations: the GT-R generates traction and speed through systems sophistication, while the Silvia depends more on momentum management and driver inputs.
Was the S15 Spec-R really cheaper than the Skyline GT-R?
Contemporary pricing supports a lower market position, but it does not provide a clean currency-adjusted ratio. Toyota GAZOO lists an October 1999 Spec-R b Package automatic at ¥2,487,000. Nissan UK’s 1999 technical sheet lists the Skyline GT-R at £54,000.
Those prices come from different countries, currencies, tax structures and specifications. They establish that the Silvia occupied a much lower tier than the GT-R; they do not prove that one car cost a precise percentage of the other. The ¥2,487,000 listing is also for the 225 PS automatic b Package, not the 250 PS six-speed manual described in Nissan’s core Spec-R specification.

What makes the S15 effective for drifting and track use?
Rear-wheel drive is the starting point. It allows the driver to control the car’s attitude with throttle, steering and clutch inputs without an all-wheel-drive system deciding how torque is distributed. The relatively low curb weight reduces the energy the brakes and tires must manage, while the turbocharged engine provides enough torque to break rear traction when desired.
The Spec-R’s helical limited-slip differential helps both driven wheels contribute when cornering or accelerating. Nissan also added reinforcement around the body and suspension attachment points, increasing the platform’s suitability for repeated hard use. Four-piston front calipers and rear discs give the car a stronger braking foundation than a basic Silvia model.
These characteristics explain the S-chassis’ long drift and track presence. They also explain why modified examples vary so widely: suspension geometry, differential type, turbo hardware, engine management and brake upgrades can change the car’s behavior more than the badge alone suggests.
Are SR20DET replacement parts and upgrades still available?
The SR20DET developed a broad aftermarket covering high-wear replacement components, bolt-on upgrades and performance electronics. That ecosystem is one reason the S15 remains attractive to owners restoring a car or building a track project. Availability is not the same as guaranteed compatibility, however.

Because many S15s have been tuned or used for drifting, a standard-looking car may hide substantial changes. A parts catalog number should be treated as a starting point, not proof of fitment.

How should the Spec-R be assessed against the GT-R in real driving?
Power and engine character
The SR20DET is a compact four-cylinder with 250 PS, while the RB26DETT is a 2.568-liter twin-turbo six-cylinder rated at 280 PS. The GT-R’s extra cylinders and turbochargers support a broader, more forceful performance envelope, but the Silvia’s engine sits in a lighter chassis and contributes less mass over the front axle.
Cornering and traction
The Silvia’s rear-drive layout and helical LSD make throttle steering and controlled oversteer central to its character. The GT-R’s ATTESA E-TS Pro system can deploy all-wheel traction when grip is limited, making it more effective when launching or accelerating out of low-grip corners.
Braking and endurance
The Spec-R has opposed four-piston front calipers and disc brakes at both ends. The GT-R’s Brembo package uses 324 mm front and 300 mm rear discs, giving the heavier car hardware designed for its higher systems and speed envelope.
Driver involvement

The S15 also gained wider recognition when one appeared as the “Mona Lisa” car in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. Production ended in 2002, making the S15 the final Silvia generation. Its limited original-market availability and extensive modification history are important context when comparing surviving examples: two cars carrying a Spec-R badge may have very different mechanical condition and equipment.
Which S15 Spec-R details matter most when identifying a car?
- Verify that the engine is the turbocharged SR20DET rather than the naturally aspirated SR20DE used in Spec-S models.
- Confirm whether the car has the six-speed manual or the four-speed automatic; output and curb weight differ between those configurations.
- Check the differential and brake hardware instead of assuming every car received the same limited-slip and 16-inch specification.
- Look for reinforcement and suspension changes, but remember that previous owners may have replaced factory components.
- Use the chassis number, original market and service records to establish the car’s identity before buying parts or valuing it.
The most defensible verdict is therefore specific: the S15 Spec-R was a cheaper, lighter and more driver-focused alternative to Nissan’s GT-R, not a mechanical equal.
