There is one genuine one-off in this story: a 1987 AMG Hammer wagon commissioned for a customer’s wife and converted from a diesel 300TD into a 375-hp V8 longroof. Later C63 and E63 estates are not factory one-offs, but individually modified wagons that pushed between 770 hp and 879 hp—and, in filmed events, turned their rear tires into smoke and rubber confetti. Together they show how Mercedes wagons evolved from discreet family transport into some of the most outrageous burnout cars ever documented.
What is the AMG Hammer wagon?
The AMG Hammer wagon is the documented customer-commissioned 1987 longroof conversion, not a regular production model. Car and Driver reported that Paul Fingold commissioned a single North America-specification example for his wife, Malka. The project began with a 1987 Mercedes-Benz 300TD diesel wagon and was carried out by an independent shop in Westmont, Illinois.

The conversion replaced the diesel powertrain with the Hammer sedan’s 6.0-liter, 32-valve M117 V8 and four-speed automatic transmission. Car and Driver reported an original rating of 375 hp. Later RENNtech performance and chassis work raised the lone wagon’s output to about 410 horsepower.
The conversion cost approximately $190,000 in 1987 dollars, an extraordinary sum for a family wagon. That expense, the single-customer origin and the unique combination of Hammer hardware with an E-class estate body are what make this the true one-off.

Which AMG wagons have actually performed giant burnouts?
The later cars are tuner builds or individually modified examples. Their evidence ranges from filmed burnouts to tuner-published specifications, so a spectacular video should not be confused with an independently instrumented performance test.
Weistec C63 AMG Estate: about 770 hp
GTspirit described a C63 AMG Estate that retained the factory 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8, rated at 457 hp and 442 lb-ft in standard form. A Stage 3 Weistec supercharger reportedly lifted the car to around 770 hp.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe car was filmed leaving Cars and Coffee XXL in the Netherlands and performed more than one long, smoky burnout for the cameras. Its appeal is the classic sleeper contrast: an ordinary-looking family estate with supercar-level output and enough rear-tire power to turn an event exit into a smoke show.
Renntech E63 S: more than 800 PS and a destroyed rear tread
Auto Bild reported that a white E63 S entered the “Burnout Madness” competition at the Bimmerworld tuning festival at TT Circuit Assen in the Netherlands. Renntech ECU remapping raised the cited output from 612 PS to over 800 PS, and the car also used an Akrapovic exhaust.
After roughly 20 seconds of full throttle, the rear-tire tread was nearly gone and rubber fragments were hanging from the tires. Auto Bild identified the tires as Michelin Pilot Super Sport and put the price of the pair at about €400 in that report. This is a vivid demonstration of tire consumption, not a durability or acceleration test.

Kleemann E63 Wagon: 850 hp and 960 lb-ft
The Drive covered a 2012 Mercedes-AMG E63 Wagon advertised through Bring a Trailer. Its Kleemann Stage 3 package reportedly combined an ECU flash, upgraded exhaust and downpipes, larger turbochargers, a carbon-fiber intake, cooling upgrades, diverter valves and a RENNtech limited-slip differential.

The Drive also reported approximately $30,000 for installation of the upgrade package. Those figures describe that particular modified car, not every E63 wagon.
VÄTH E63 S wagon: 879 hp and a claimed 3.0-second sprint
Motor1 reported a VÄTH-tuned E63 S wagon with upgraded turbochargers, a larger intercooler and reworked exhaust. The tuner’s published specifications were 879 hp and 811 lb-ft, a claimed 0–62-mph time of 3.0 seconds and a 214-mph limited top speed.
The build also used 21-inch forged wheels, 265-mm front and 295-mm rear Michelin tires, and a 20-mm lower ride height. These are tuner-published or reported numbers rather than results from an independent test.
Top Gear’s C63 Estate
Top Gear named the Mercedes-AMG C63 Estate its 2016 Estate Car of the Year and published footage of the estate performing a rolling burnout. The editorial appeal was the same formula as the other cars: understated commuter-car shape, practical wagon body and deliberately antisocial V8 behavior.

What was the fastest factory AMG wagon benchmark?
Car and Driver called the 2018 E63 S wagon AMG’s most powerful, advanced and quickest longroof at that time. Its 603-hp, 627-lb-ft twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 worked with a nine-speed automatic and rear-biased 4Matic+ all-wheel drive. A rear-wheel-only Drift mode gave the production car a controlled way to overcome the normal traction advantage of all-wheel drive.
In Car and Driver’s instrumented testing, the wagon reached 60 mph in 3.0 seconds and completed the quarter-mile in 11.2 seconds at 126 mph. That independently measured benchmark is separate from the tuner claims listed above.
Why do these wagons make such effective sleepers?
The estate body preserves passenger seating and a useful cargo area while disguising the expensive hardware underneath. The Hammer’s diesel-wagon starting point makes its transformation especially dramatic; the later C63 and E63 cars look close enough to executive family transport that their outputs are easy to underestimate.
That practicality has limits. Superchargers, larger turbochargers, cooling systems, exhaust work, high-output engine calibrations and limited-slip hardware add complexity, while repeated burnouts turn tires into a consumable rather than a long-term component.

What tires and running costs matter on an E63 wagon?
Auto Bild’s burnout report named Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires on the over-800-PS E63 S. Tire Rack lists that tire in 265/35ZR20 front and 295/30ZR20 rear sizes for a 2021 E63 AMG S Wagon. Those dimensions are not a universal fitment guide: confirm your model year, wheel diameter, axle position, load rating and speed rating before ordering.

The documented costs show how widely these cars differ. The Hammer’s $190,000 conversion was a 1987 one-time expense; the Kleemann installation was reported at about $30,000; and the Renntech burnout consumed a roughly €400 rear-tire pair in seconds. A tuned wagon’s purchase price therefore tells only part of its running-cost story.
What should you verify before calling an AMG wagon a one-off?
- Provenance: establish whether it was a customer commission, a factory AMG model or a later tuner conversion.
- Engine specification: distinguish naturally aspirated, supercharged and twin-turbo V8s, and keep hp and PS labels exactly as reported.
- Evidence: separate historical documentation, filmed burnouts, tuner claims and independent instrumented tests.
- Hardware: check turbochargers or superchargers, intercooling, cooling, exhaust, transmission and differential work.
- Tires: verify exact fitment and expect dramatically higher consumption when high-output cars are used for burnouts.
FAQ
Why are some power figures given in PS instead of hp?
PS is metric horsepower, while hp in these reports generally means imperial horsepower. They are close but not identical, so an “800 PS” claim should not be silently rewritten as 800 hp; preserving the source’s unit avoids overstating or understating the result.
What is a Mercedes-marked tire?
Michelin describes vehicle-specific marked-tire development as part of its continuing Mercedes-AMG relationship. A marked tire is developed and approved for a particular vehicle specification, but that designation still does not replace checking the wheel, axle, load and speed requirements of an individual wagon.
Does a burnout video prove a wagon is the fastest AMG estate?
No. A burnout demonstrates available wheelspin and tire abuse, not acceleration, lap time or top speed. The 2018 E63 S figures from Car and Driver are a separate instrumented benchmark, while the tuner cars’ headline outputs and sprint times remain reported or claimed specifications.
Why is the Hammer wagon more historically significant than the later 800-hp cars?
The later cars are spectacular modifications, but the Hammer longroof was a single customer-commissioned conversion built from a diesel wagon. Its rarity and documented origin make it a distinct historical object, even though newer tuner estates produce far higher published power numbers.
