The best public EV charging network depends on what you drive and where you charge. Tesla Supercharger is still the strongest choice for highway travel, while EVgo is the best broadly available non-Tesla fast-charging option. IONNA is the most promising newer network, Electrify America remains important for CCS road trips, and ChargePoint is the most useful app and network for everyday Level 2 charging.

This ranking covers U.S. public charging as of August 9, 2026. Port counts are not directly comparable: ChargePoint includes a huge Level 2 and roaming footprint, while the other networks are judged mainly by their DC-fast-charging coverage.

Quick ranking

Rank Network Best for
1 Tesla Supercharger Overall coverage and road trips
2 EVgo Non-Tesla DC fast charging
3 IONNA New multi-brand CCS and NACS charging
4 Electrify America Large CCS highway network
5 ChargePoint Local, workplace, destination, and Level 2 charging

1. Tesla Supercharger: best overall

Tesla has the most mature public fast-charging experience in the U.S. and Canada. J.D. Power ranked Tesla Supercharger first in the 2025 DC-fast-charging segment with a score of 709. The U.S. Department of Energy’s June 18, 2026 snapshot listed 40,089 Tesla charging ports across the two countries.

The network’s biggest advantage is not just its size. Tesla vehicles integrate Supercharger stops directly into the navigation system, show live stall availability, and can estimate how much battery will remain when you arrive. To confirm that Trip Planner is enabled in a Tesla, use Settings > Navigation > Trip Planner on the center display.

EVDANCE Level 1&2 EV Charger, Electric Vehicle Portable Charger with 25FT Cable, ETL Listed J1772 EVSE for All EVs & PHEVs, 12A 120V/16A 240V(Black, 16A Max | NEMA 5-15&6-20(Standard Home Plug))
  • Flex Level 1 EV Charger - The EVDANCE Level 1 electric car charger is compatible with J1772 electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles (North American Standard). *Tesla requires a SAE J1772 adapter.
  • Convenient to Use - This charger has both NEMA 6-20 plug for 16A 240V charging (3.68kW, 10-12 mi/h) and a NEMA 6-20 to 5-15 plug adapter for 12A 120V charging (1.44kW, 2-5 mi/h). The included bag makes it easier to carry on the go. It also has a 25ft cable length, you can use it flexibly from anywhere in the garage or driveway.
  • Check Your Outlet Type -This charger works with standard 120V NEMA 5-15/5-20 outlets (2-5 mph charging speed) and 240V NEMA 6-20 outlets (10-12 mph) . It's not compatible with NEMA 6-15/10-30/14-30/14-50/6-50 outlets – you'll need a NEMA 14-50/14-30/10-30/6-50 to 6-20 adapter (sold separately) to connect.
  • Compatible EV Models -This EV charger works with most major electric vehicles, including Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Audi, Nissan Ariya, Rivian R1S, Kia, and others. However, it's not compatible with Mini Cooper Electric Hardtop,Toyota Prus Prime/Z4X/RAV4Prime, Porsche Taycan Base/4S/Turbo/Turbo S or Tesla models (Tesla requires a J1772 to Tesla Adapter, sold separately). For a full list of compatible models, check out the Full Compatibility List on our product page.
  • Indication Displays - LED display that can tell you the status as well as indicate errors while charging your electric vehicle.

That makes Tesla the easiest network for a long trip when you own a Tesla. You generally select a destination, follow the suggested route, and let the car choose charging stops based on battery state and distance.

What Tesla owners should know

  • Supercharging prices vary by location, time, vehicle, and sometimes station utilization.
  • The price shown when you plug in is fixed for that session; it does not change halfway through charging.
  • Charging slows considerably as the battery approaches full. For most road trips, charging to roughly 80% is much more time-efficient than waiting for 100%.

Non-Tesla access has expanded, but it is not universal. A Ford, Rivian, Hyundai, or other EV cannot automatically use every Supercharger. Compatibility depends on the specific site, vehicle, connector, and adapter. Check the Tesla app or Tesla’s Find Us map before routing to a station.

Non-Tesla drivers will usually need the Tesla app and a payment card. The setup path is Tesla app > menu in the top-right corner > Charging > Manage Payment > Payment > Add Card > Save. Then choose a Supercharging payment method under Tesla app > menu > Charging > Manage Payment > Payment Method.

Best for: Tesla owners, frequent highway travelers, and drivers who value predictable route planning and live station information.

2. EVgo: best non-Tesla fast-charging network

EVgo is the best all-around choice for drivers who want a dedicated DC-fast-charging network without relying on Tesla. EVgo reports more than 1,200 fast-charging locations in 47 states. Its first-quarter 2026 filing listed 3,990 public-network stalls in operation as of March 31, 2026.

Its chargers range from 50 kW to 350 kW, and many locations are near supermarkets, restaurants, and shopping centers. That matters when a 20- to 40-minute charging stop needs to double as a meal or errand.

EVgo supports payment through its app, RFID, and credit card. Eligible vehicles can also use Autocharge+, which links the vehicle to the driver’s EVgo account so a session can start without repeatedly opening the app. EVgo said Autocharge+ had enabled more than five million sessions by January 2026.

EVgo’s NACS expansion

EVgo is adding NACS connectors, with a 2026 target of more than 500 NACS connectors in over 25 states. A vehicle with a native NACS port, including compatible Teslas, can use Autocharge+ at eligible EVgo NACS sites without an adapter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

However, the rollout is site-specific. A Tesla or other NACS-equipped EV should verify the connector listed for the exact station rather than assuming every EVgo location has NACS.

ChargePoint HomeFlex Level 2 EV Fast Charger, J1772, Smart, Hardwired, 50A
  • Charge with Confidence: ChargePoint builds reliable, flexible EV charging stations for home, business, and fleets. Get 24/7 support and access to hundreds of thousands of North American charging locations.
  • Charge Smart: With the user-friendly ChargePoint Mobile App, you can control your electric car charger, manage reminders, connect to smart home devices, find stations, get data and charging info, and access the latest features. Note: WiFi is needed for certain functionalities and troubleshooting steps if connectivity issues arise.
  • Vast Network: Wherever you go, ChargePoint’s network includes 274k+ stations across North America and Europe and 565k+ roaming partner stations.
  • Safe & Durable: Rely on this UL-certified EV charger for safe home charging. It can be installed indoors or outdoors by an electrician and includes a cold-resistant cable.
  • Fast & Powerful: This EV charger charges 9× faster than a 120V outlet, delivering up to 45 mi/hr., dependent upon your vehicle. It features a J1772 connector for all non-Tesla EVs and requires a 20A or 80A circuit. For Tesla EVs, this will require an adapter.

Also, a 350-kW label describes the charger’s maximum capability, not the power your car will receive. Your vehicle’s charging limit, battery temperature, state of charge, and the site’s electrical configuration determine the actual rate.

Best for: Non-Tesla drivers who frequently need DC fast charging and want convenient payment, Autocharge+, and locations near amenities.

3. IONNA: best new multi-brand network

IONNA is a manufacturer-backed network created by eight automakers. It is designed to be brand-neutral: its Rechargeries are open to all EVs, not just vehicles from those founding companies. The DOE’s July 1, 2026 snapshot listed 1,158 IONNA ports.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The network’s most useful design choice is connector coverage. IONNA says every Rechargery is intended to provide both CCS and NACS connectors. That gives drivers a better chance of using the station without buying a separate adapter or hunting for a compatible stall.

Payment is unusually flexible. Drivers can use a credit card, the IONNA app, Plug & Charge, Google Pay, or Apple Pay. IONNA sessions can also be initiated through supported automaker and roaming apps, including ChargePoint, Ford, Kia Access, Mercedes-Benz, My BMW, myChevrolet, MyHyundai with Bluelink, Rivian, Toyota, and Volvo Cars.

Why IONNA is not higher

IONNA is still much smaller than Tesla, EVgo, or Electrify America. The 1,158-port figure describes the network snapshot, not every announced or “coming soon” site. Availability can therefore change quickly as new Rechargeries open.

Tesla compatibility also deserves attention. IONNA says some Tesla models built before 2021 may require a vehicle upgrade for third-party charging. Check the owner’s manual or confirm compatibility before relying on an IONNA stop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: Drivers with newer CCS or NACS vehicles who find an IONNA station along their route and want simple card payment, Plug & Charge, and both connector types.

4. Electrify America: best broad CCS road-trip alternative

Electrify America remains one of the largest dedicated U.S. fast-charging networks. The DOE listed 5,913 Electrify America ports in its July 1, 2026 snapshot. For CCS-equipped EVs traveling major interstate corridors, it remains a network worth checking before departure.

EVIQO Level 2 EV Charger J1772 40A NEMA 14-50 - 240V Wall Charging Station
  • WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
  • PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
  • CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
  • SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
  • GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.

Electrify America supports Plug & Charge at all of its stations, according to the company’s current FAQ. Some automakers also provide Electrify America credits or complimentary sessions with certain vehicle purchases, which can make it the cheapest practical option for those drivers.

The main caution is that a large network is not automatically a consistently reliable one. J.D. Power ranked Tesla highest among eligible DC-fast-charging networks in its 2025 study. The study reported a 591-point average for third-party DC-fast-charging providers collectively, rather than publishing a directly comparable top-five score for every individual network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Equipment varies from one Electrify America site to another. Do not assume every location has 350-kW dispensers. Check the station listing and connector details before planning a route, particularly if your EV is limited to CCS or has a relatively small charging window.

Even at a 350-kW stall, your vehicle may receive much less. The car’s maximum charge rate, battery temperature, state of charge, and charger load all affect the session. A vehicle that peaks at 150 kW gains nothing from being connected to a 350-kW dispenser.

Best for: CCS drivers on major U.S. corridors, especially when an Electrify America station is closer or less busy than competing sites.

5. ChargePoint: best for local availability and Level 2 coverage

ChargePoint is the most useful network for finding everyday public charging. It has a particularly large presence at workplaces, apartments, shopping centers, hotels, and other destinations. The DOE counted 89,702 ChargePoint ports in the U.S. and Canada as of July 1, 2026.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That number should not be compared directly with Tesla’s or EVgo’s fast-charging totals. ChargePoint’s figure includes a vast Level 2 and roaming footprint, not only high-power DC chargers. For overnight charging or a two-hour shopping stop, that broad footprint is exactly the point. For a cross-country trip, it is less useful than the raw number suggests.

Useful ChargePoint app controls

The app’s Quick filters include Available, Fast, and My EV. Advanced filters allow drivers to narrow results by network, connector type, amenities, and station status. Use those filters before leaving rather than discovering at the destination that the listed port is a slow Level 2 unit.

A session can be started with Start Charge, Tap to Charge using Apple Pay or Google Pay, or a ChargePoint RFID card. At ChargePoint Omni Port stations, select the correct connector—NACS or CCS1—in the app before beginning the session.

  • [SMART TFT DISPLAY & ACTIVE TEMPERATURE PROTECTION] The enhanced TFT color display provides clear real-time charging information, including voltage, current, power, charging status, and temperature. The YLITES temperature management system continuously monitors the plug-outlet connection point and can intelligently reduce current when necessary to help reduce overheating risk. Over-voltage, over-current, leakage, grounding, and insulation protection provide additional safeguards for more reliable daily charging, whether charging on 110/120V Level 1 power or 240V Level 2 power.
  • [BUILT FOR SAFE & RELIABLE EVERYDAY CHARGING] Designed for repeated home and on-the-road use, the charger features an IP66 water-resistant enclosure, fire-resistant materials, and multi-layer electrical protection. It is designed to operate in temperatures from −22°F to 122°F, supporting charging in garages, driveways, and changing outdoor conditions. Combining dual-voltage flexibility, a long cable, portable construction, and multiple safety protections, this EV portable charger works as a dependable everyday charger or a convenient backup charging solution.

ChargePoint also lists roaming stations operated by other companies. It does not operate every charger shown in its app. At a roaming location, the partner network controls parts of the session, availability information may be less complete, and a ChargePoint account may be required. ChargePoint says drivers are billed at the price displayed in its app, which may differ from the price shown on the station.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Waitlist feature is similarly limited: it appears only when a site is full, the station owner has enabled the feature, and the location is a ChargePoint station rather than a roaming partner.

Best for: Apartment residents, commuters, workplace charging users, and anyone who needs the broadest chance of finding a nearby public Level 2 port.

How to choose the right network

  1. Match the connector. Confirm whether your EV uses NACS, CCS1, or requires an adapter. Connector compatibility is more important than the network’s national port count.
  2. Separate Level 2 from DC fast charging. Level 2 is useful when you will be parked for hours. DC fast charging is the relevant category for highway stops.
  3. Check the exact station. Look at live availability, operating status, connector type, power rating, and payment requirements. A network’s average performance cannot tell you whether one particular site is working.
  4. Plan a backup. On a long trip, identify another station within range. A broken stall, queue, or unexpected detour can turn a comfortable battery margin into a problem.
  5. Do not chase the biggest kW number. Your vehicle determines the maximum useful charging rate. Battery temperature and state of charge also matter, especially after the battery passes roughly 70% to 80%.

Common claims that need correcting

Claim What is actually true
All Tesla Superchargers are closed to other EVs. Many sites support non-Tesla vehicles, but access depends on the site, vehicle, connector, and adapter.
Every station in the ChargePoint app is operated by ChargePoint. The app also displays roaming partners, which may have different controls, status information, and requirements.
A 350-kW charger gives every EV 350 kW. The vehicle, battery temperature, state of charge, and station configuration determine actual power.
