Those features are concentrated in the GT and Dark Horse, while the lineup also includes a turbo-four EcoBoost and modern automatic, digital and driver-assistance technology.
Which traditional muscle-car features remain?
Here, the formula means a large-displacement naturally aspirated V8, front-engine rear-wheel drive, a driver-operated manual gearbox, a limited-slip differential and performance hardware. Ford retains each element somewhere in the 2026 lineup, though equipment and transmission availability depend on trim and package.

- V8: A 5.0L naturally aspirated V8 powers GT and Dark Horse models.
- Manual: Six-speed manuals remain available, including a rev-matching option for GT configurations.
- Rear drive: Ford lists rear-wheel drive across the range.
- Mechanical performance hardware: Limited-slip axles, independent rear suspension, selectable drive modes and launch control are among the listed equipment.
Which 2026 Mustang engines are available?
The EcoBoost uses a 2.3L turbocharged four-cylinder. GT models get Ford’s 5.0L Ti-VCT V8, while Dark Horse uses a modified 5.0L V8. The output figures below are Ford specifications, not independent test results.
| Model | Engine | Ford-listed output |
|---|---|---|
| EcoBoost | 2.3L EcoBoost four-cylinder | Not stated in the cited Ford specification. |
| GT | 5.0L Ti-VCT V8 | 480 hp and 415 lb-ft on 93-octane fuel; 486 hp and 418 lb-ft with active exhaust. |
| Dark Horse | Modified 5.0L V8 | 500 hp and 418 lb-ft. |
The GT’s naturally aspirated V8 is the most direct link to the traditional muscle-car recipe. The EcoBoost offers a different engine character, but it does not replace the V8 option.

Can you get a manual transmission?
Yes. Ford lists a six-speed manual with rev matching for GT configurations and a 10-speed automatic as an alternative. The Dark Horse also offers a TREMEC six-speed manual and a 10-speed automatic, but which transmission is standard depends on the exact configuration: Ford’s model-year update says the Dark Horse automatic is now standard and the TREMEC manual optional in the revised equipment mix. Check the specification for the precise trim and package before ordering.
The manual keeps a direct, driver-operated gearbox in the lineup; the automatic brings a different, more convenience-oriented option. As the Associated Press put it, “The Mustang’s V8 also sounds better and can be had with a manual transmission for greater driver engagement.” Associated Press

Is the 2026 Mustang still rear-wheel drive?
Yes. Ford lists rear-wheel drive across the 2026 Mustang range. GT specifications also list independent rear suspension and a limited-slip rear axle, alongside selectable drive modes and launch control. That is functional rear-drive hardware, not just a styling cue.
Depending on transmission and performance package, Ford lists optional TORSEN limited-slip axle ratios of 3.55 and 3.73. GT braking equipment includes 14-inch front brakes with four-piston calipers and 13-inch rear rotors with single-piston calipers. Ford’s specifications

How do GT, GT Performance Package and Dark Horse differ?
They share the V8-and-rear-drive foundation, but their equipment points to different priorities.
| Configuration | What distinguishes it |
|---|---|
| GT | 5.0L V8, manual or 10-speed automatic, limited-slip rear-axle equipment and selectable drive modes. |
| GT Performance Package | Package-specific chassis and axle choices; available TORSEN ratios depend on transmission and package. |
| Dark Horse | Modified 500-hp V8, MagneRide damping, larger brakes and track-oriented cooling and chassis equipment; transmission standard/optional status depends on the revised configuration. |
Ford’s cited specifications do not establish every component’s standard or optional status for every market and build. Consult the exact model-year equipment listing when comparing individual cars.

What has Ford modernized?
The Mustang’s heritage hardware sits within a contemporary coupe rather than a stripped-down throwback. The EcoBoost uses a 10-speed automatic, the GT offers one, and the Dark Horse adds adaptive MagneRide damping and track-focused equipment. Ford’s model-year information also notes revised wheels and trim equipment, while its owner manual covers contemporary operating, cooling and brake systems. Digital displays and driver-assistance systems further place the car in the modern era. Ford’s 2026 model specifications Ford’s model-year update 2026 Mustang owner manual
The result is a mix rather than a time capsule: the V8, manual option and rear-drive layout remain, but buyers can also choose an automatic and newer chassis and electronic systems.
