Tesla’s “We, Robot” presentation on October 10, 2024, was billed as a look at the company’s autonomous future. Held at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California, the roughly 20-minute event introduced the two-seat Cybercab, unexpectedly revealed the larger Robovan and put Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robots on display.
It was visually ambitious, but it was not a conventional vehicle launch. Most driving demonstrations took place on a closed studio lot, and Tesla provided few firm details about pricing, production volumes, regulations, range or commercial availability. The Cybercab shown was a prototype, the Robovan remained a concept and several Optimus demonstrations involved remote human assistance.

Cybercab: Tesla’s purpose-built robotaxi
The main attraction was the Cybercab, a compact electric vehicle designed specifically for autonomous ride-hailing. Unlike Tesla’s current passenger cars, it has no steering wheel, accelerator pedal or brake pedal. Its two doors open upward, giving the small cabin a distinctive appearance and making the vehicle unsuitable for normal owner driving unless regulations and Tesla’s operating model change substantially.

Tesla later generally described it as a 2026 production vehicle. However, the event did not establish a final retail price, battery capacity, range, charging time or production target. The sub-$30,000 figure should therefore be treated as a target, not a confirmed sticker price.

Tesla also showed the car using wireless charging rather than a conventional charging port. That fits the proposed robotaxi model: a fleet vehicle could position itself over a charging pad without requiring a human to plug it in.
What the Cybercab demonstration actually proved
Tesla displayed approximately 20 Cybercab prototypes and offered invited guests short autonomous rides around the Warner Bros. lot. Those rides showed that the vehicles could navigate a controlled private environment, but they were not commercial robotaxi trips on Los Angeles streets.
The presentation did not answer several practical questions that matter more than the styling:
- How the no-controls vehicle would satisfy crash-safety and federal or state regulatory requirements.
- What happens when a passenger needs help or the vehicle encounters a blocked route.
- How long the battery would last between charges.
- Who would own, insure and maintain the cars.
- Whether customers could buy one for private use or only access it through Tesla’s network.
That distinction remains important. Tesla’s current Robotaxi service initially uses Model Y vehicles, not Cybercabs. Tesla says the limited service is available in parts of Miami, Orlando and Tampa, Florida, and Austin, Dallas and Houston, Texas. Tesla later began producing Cybercab units in Texas and testing a production version without a steering wheel or pedals on public roads in Austin, but that later progress does not turn the 2024 presentation into a customer launch.
Robovan: the surprise reveal
The unexpected second vehicle was the Robovan, a much larger autonomous electric vehicle intended to carry people or goods. Musk said it could transport up to 20 passengers and serve dense urban routes, group travel or cargo operations.

He also suggested operating costs could fall to roughly 5 to 10 cents per mile. That was a projection, not an operating figure demonstrated at the event. Tesla did not provide a battery size, range estimate, seating layout for a production model or details about how the vehicle would be certified.
| Robovan detail | What Tesla showed or claimed | What remained unknown |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | Up to 20 passengers | Final certified seating capacity |
| Purpose | Urban transportation, group travel and cargo | Whether it would carry passengers, goods or both in production |
| Operating cost | Projected at about 5–10 cents per mile | Real-world cost, energy use and maintenance expense |
| Availability | Concept vehicle displayed at the event | Price, factory, production date and commercial service plan |
There was no production schedule, manufacturing location or announced customer-order process. Calling the Robovan a confirmed 20-seat Tesla model goes beyond what the event established. It was a design and business concept, not a vehicle ready for sale.
Existing Model 3 and Model Y cars
Musk also said Tesla expected unsupervised autonomous driving to become available for Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in California and Texas during 2025. That was a forward-looking statement, not a feature activated at the presentation.
It is also important not to confuse that promise with Tesla’s consumer Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system. A supervised driver-assistance system requires the driver to remain responsible and attentive. A legally approved, fully driverless system is a different product with different regulatory and operational requirements.
Tesla’s Robotaxi service is separate from the ordinary consumer FSD offering. Its support information describes a limited service using Model Y vehicles, with its own app, service area and rider instructions. Riders are told not to sit in the front-left seat, where a conventional driver would normally sit.

The proposed Tesla owner robotaxi network
Musk repeated Tesla’s long-running idea of allowing owners to add their vehicles to a Tesla ride-hailing network. Under that proposal, an owner could make a car available to passengers when it was otherwise sitting unused, while Tesla handled the network and the owner received a share of the revenue.
The presentation did not provide the information needed to treat that as an operating product. Tesla did not announce a final owner agreement, commission structure, insurance arrangement, vehicle approval process or general launch date.
That makes the owner-operated network a proposed business model rather than a service that became available after the event. It also leaves open practical questions about cleaning, charging, repairs, liability and what happens when a privately owned car is needed by its owner.
Optimus humanoid robots
Tesla devoted part of the event to Optimus, its humanoid robot project. Several prototypes walked short distances, danced, played rock-paper-scissors, gave high-fives and interacted with guests. At a bar area, robots served drinks.
Musk described a much broader future role for Optimus, including babysitting, walking a dog, mowing a lawn and fetching groceries. He estimated a future price of approximately $20,000 to $30,000 per robot, but Tesla did not give a production date or finalized specifications.

The important limitation: remote assistance
The demonstrations should not be described as proof that Optimus could independently perform all of those tasks. Reporting after the event found that humans remotely controlled or assisted many of the robots’ interactions with guests, although the prototypes could walk using onboard AI.
Tesla did not make that limitation clear during Musk’s presentation. As a result, there is a large difference between what viewers saw—a polished, staged interaction—and a commercially deployable home robot that can safely understand unfamiliar environments and complete chores without supervision.
What Tesla did not show
Despite the event’s focus on autonomy, Tesla did not provide a detailed product plan for several areas that potential buyers and investors would need to evaluate:
- Cybercab battery capacity, range and charging time.
- Final Cybercab crash-safety certification and regulatory approval.
- A production-ready Robovan or a firm delivery schedule.
- A detailed robotaxi app, fare structure or passenger-support system.
- A functioning, generally available owner-operated robotaxi marketplace.
- A production autonomous Tesla Semi.
- A new low-cost conventional Tesla passenger car.
- Firm, enforceable delivery dates for the announced products.
That gap explains why the event drew criticism for offering more vision than technical and business detail. Tesla showed the direction in which it wanted the company to go, but not a complete roadmap for getting there.

Was the Cybercab available to buy after the event?
No. The October 2024 event showed Cybercab prototypes in controlled-area demonstrations. Tesla did not announce a final retail price, range, production rate or customer-order process. The advertised price below $30,000 remained a target.
Is the Robovan a production Tesla vehicle?
No. Tesla presented the Robovan as a concept intended to carry up to 20 passengers or goods. No production date, price, battery specification, manufacturing location or commercial service plan was announced.
Were Tesla’s Optimus robots fully autonomous at the event?
Not for all of the demonstrations. The robots could walk using onboard AI, but reporting after the event found that humans remotely controlled or assisted many guest-facing interactions. The presentation did not demonstrate a commercially ready autonomous household robot.
The Bottom Line
“We, Robot” was a prototype showcase rather than a product launch. The Cybercab established Tesla’s design for a small, no-controls robotaxi and carried a target price below $30,000. The Robovan expanded the idea to larger group and cargo transport, while Optimus presented Tesla’s humanoid-robot ambitions.
What Tesla did not establish was just as significant: no final Cybercab specifications, no confirmed retail price, no production-ready Robovan, no generally available owner robotaxi network and no proof that Optimus could independently perform the staged tasks. Tesla’s later limited Robotaxi service and Cybercab testing are separate developments from what was available at the 2024 event.
