The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 has been sold under its current model name since 1999, but its history reaches back to 1975, when “Silverado” was still a trim level on Chevrolet’s C/K pickup. For model-year research, used-truck shopping, parts searches, and vehicle-history reports, the important distinction is that the Silverado 1500 has four completed generations through 2026, plus an announced next-generation 2027 model.
The biggest source of confusion is 2007: Chevrolet sold both the redesigned GMT900 Silverado and the older GMT800 truck as the Silverado Classic. The 2022 Silverado is another commonly misclassified truck; it received a major refresh but remains part of the fourth generation that began in 2019.

Silverado name history: 1975 versus 1999
“Silverado” did not begin as the name of an entirely new truck in 1975. Chevrolet used it as a higher-level trim designation on the C/K pickup for the 1975 model year. The C/K name continued through the 1998 model year.

For 1999, Chevrolet made Silverado the model name for its full-size light-duty pickup lineup. That is why most generation charts begin with the 1999 Silverado, even though the Silverado name itself is older.
First-generation Silverado: 1999–2006, plus 2007 Classic
The first Silverado was built on GM’s GMT800 architecture. It replaced the C/K as Chevrolet’s full-size pickup and brought a more rounded body, a redesigned interior, and a new naming structure for the light-duty range.

The 1999–2002 trucks use the original GMT800 body and interior design. Chevrolet updated the styling for 2003, creating the sharper headlight and grille appearance enthusiasts often call the “cat-eye” Silverado. That update was a facelift, not a new generation.
Notable GMT800 developments included standard four-wheel disc brakes and the introduction of AutoTrac four-wheel drive. The 2003 update also brought available Quadrasteer four-wheel steering, Bose audio, and rear-seat DVD entertainment on properly equipped trucks.
Why 2007 is listed twice
Chevrolet launched the redesigned GMT900 Silverado for the 2007 model year, but it did not immediately discontinue the old GMT800 truck. The older design continued as the 2007 Silverado Classic.

As a result, “2007 Silverado” is incomplete when identifying a vehicle. A 2007 truck may be:
- The first-year second-generation GMT900 Silverado; or
- The first-generation-based GMT800 Silverado Classic.
For parts, body panels, suspension components, and interior trim, confirm the platform or inspect the truck rather than relying on the model year alone.
Second-generation Silverado: 2007–2013
The GMT900 Silverado was a complete redesign for 2007. It received new exterior styling, a redesigned cabin, revised chassis components, and improvements in towing, payload, and fuel economy capability.
Model years
2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013.
The GMT900 is not the same truck as the 2007 Silverado Classic, despite sharing the same model-year designation. The quickest practical way to separate them is to compare the body and interior: the GMT900 has the newer 2007 redesign, while the Classic retains the previous GMT800 shape and cabin.
Chevrolet also offered a Two-Mode Hybrid Silverado during this generation. It was a specialized version rather than a separate Silverado generation, and its hybrid hardware makes it especially important to verify the exact vehicle before ordering drivetrain or electrical parts.

Safety technology expanded with available Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning, and Front and Rear Park Assist. These features were important additions at the time, but they were not standard on every trim or configuration, so a used truck’s equipment must be checked by its window sticker, VIN-based build sheet, or physical inspection.
The 2016 model year added built-in 4G LTE Wi-Fi capability. For 2018, Chevrolet offered the Centennial Edition to mark 100 years of Chevrolet trucks. Neither package changed the generation classification.
Fourth-generation Silverado: 2019–2026
The fourth-generation Silverado 1500 arrived for 2019 on the T1XX platform. Chevrolet used aluminum for the hood, doors, and tailgate while increasing the use of high-strength steel in the body and frame. The redesign also expanded the available powertrains and introduced a 3.0-liter inline-six Duramax diesel and a 10-speed automatic transmission among the available combinations.
Model years
2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026.
Important fourth-generation updates
- 2021: The available Multi-Flex Tailgate was introduced.
- 2022: Chevrolet gave the Silverado a substantial cabin and technology refresh, including a redesigned interior and Google-based multimedia system.
- 2023–2026: The truck continued as the same T1XX generation with ongoing trim, equipment, and powertrain updates.
The 2022 truck should not be called a fifth-generation Silverado. It is a refreshed version of the 2019-generation truck, much like the 2003 update was a facelift within the first generation.
2026 engines and towing
For 2026, Chevrolet lists four main engine families:
Rank #4
- Detailed repair and maintenance coverage trusted by professional technicians and DIYers for decades.
- Clear step-by-step instructions supported by wiring diagrams, diagnostic charts, and technical illustrations.
- Covers routine maintenance through advanced repairs, making it the go-to resource for keeping your vehicle running reliably.
| Engine family | General description |
|---|---|
| TurboMax | 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder |
| EcoTec3 V8 | 5.3-liter V8 |
| EcoTec3 V8 | 6.2-liter V8 |
| Duramax | 3.0-liter turbo-diesel inline-six |
When properly equipped, the 2026 Silverado 1500 has a maximum available towing rating of 13,300 pounds. That figure applies to a specific configuration; cab style, bed length, engine, axle ratio, drivetrain, and equipment can all change the rating. It should not be applied to every 2026 Silverado.
Announced fifth generation: 2027 Silverado
Chevrolet announced the next-generation 2027 Silverado 1500 on June 16, 2026. The company said the truck was expected to go on sale at the end of 2026, while pricing and additional availability details would be announced later.
The announced powertrain lineup includes next-generation 5.7-liter and 6.6-liter V8 engines, an enhanced 2.7-liter TurboMax, and the 3.0-liter Duramax diesel. Chevrolet also announced seven trims:
- Work Truck
- Custom
- Silverado
- Custom Trail Boss
- Trail Boss
- ZR2
- High Country
For 2027, Chevrolet says the Silverado trim replaces the previous LT designation. Because the truck had been announced but was not yet an on-sale current model as of August 8, 2026, it is best treated as an upcoming generation rather than folded into the completed 1999–2026 history.

Pre-1999 Chevrolet C/K pickups
Older C/K trucks are part of the Silverado name’s history, but they are not Silverado 1500 model years. The Silverado 1500 model-name sequence starts in 1999.
The 2007 Silverado Classic
The Classic is a carryover GMT800 sold during the 2007 overlap. It belongs with the first-generation design for identification purposes, even though it has a 2007 model-year label.

The 2022 refresh
The 2022 Silverado has a significantly different interior and updated technology, but it remains a fourth-generation T1XX truck.
Silverado EV
The Silverado EV is an electric Silverado product that Chevrolet markets separately from the gas-powered Silverado 1500. It is not the fifth generation of the conventional gas Silverado 1500.
How to identify a Silverado generation before buying parts
- Start with the VIN and model year. Use the VIN to confirm the vehicle’s exact build and equipment.
- Pay special attention to 2007. Determine whether the truck is a GMT900 Silverado or GMT800 Silverado Classic.
- Check the body style. Cab configuration, bed length, trim, and special editions can affect compatibility even within one generation.
- Verify the engine and transmission. Silverado powertrains changed during several generations, and diesel, hybrid, and V8 components are not interchangeable simply because the trucks share a model name.
- Use the platform designation when available. GMT800, GMT900, K2XX, and T1XX are more precise than a generic “Silverado” description.

How many generations of Silverado 1500 are there?
There are four completed Silverado 1500 generations through the 2026 model year. Chevrolet has announced a next-generation 2027 Silverado, which is best listed separately until it is on sale.
Is a 2007 Silverado a first- or second-generation truck?
It can be either. The redesigned GMT900 Silverado was sold for 2007, while the older GMT800 design continued as the 2007 Silverado Classic. The truck’s body and platform must be confirmed.
Is the 2022 Silverado a new generation?
No. The 2022 Silverado received a major interior and technology refresh, but it remains part of the fourth generation that began with the 2019 model year.
The Bottom Line
For U.S. model-year shopping, the Silverado 1500 timeline is: first generation, 1999–2006 plus the 2007 Classic; second generation, 2007–2013; third generation, 2014–2018; and fourth generation, 2019–2026. The 2027 Silverado is the announced next generation. Always identify the platform—not just the year—when a 2007 truck, a special edition, or a parts listing is involved.
