As of August 8, 2026, Mazda has not confirmed the name, launch date, price, engine, transmission, specifications, or U.S. availability of a vehicle called the RX-9.
What Mazda has confirmed is more interesting than the internet’s increasingly specific rumors: the company is still developing rotary-engine technology, and its MAZDA ICONIC SP concept provides the clearest indication yet of what a future rotary sports car could look like. The concept is real. The RX-9 name and production plan are not.

What is the Mazda RX-9?
The RX-9 is an unofficial name used by automotive media and enthusiasts for a possible Mazda sports car positioned above the MX-5 Miata. It is often described as a successor to the RX-7, or more broadly as Mazda’s return to the rotary-powered sports-car market.

Mazda has not publicly assigned the RX-9 name to the project. The company’s official newsroom, with releases listed through July 30, 2026, contains no production announcement for an RX-9. There is also no confirmed order window, sales date, production volume, or market availability.

That distinction matters because many online reports present projected specifications as if Mazda had released them. It has not. The most credible information comes from Mazda’s rotary development work and the ICONIC SP concept, but neither should be treated as a finalized RX-9.
The MAZDA ICONIC SP is the key evidence
Unveiled at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show, the MAZDA ICONIC SP is a compact sports-car concept using a two-rotor Rotary-EV system. In this arrangement, the rotary engine generates electricity and electric motors propel the car. Mazda also says the engine can use carbon-neutral fuels.
Mazda’s March 2025 investor presentation gave the concept these figures:

Rotary powertrain: what Mazda has and has not confirmed
Mazda has reopened its rotary-engine development group to address current emissions requirements, including U.S. regulations and Euro 7. CEO Masahiro Moro has identified emissions compliance as a major challenge, while CTO Ryuichi Umeshita has indicated that the technology is approaching readiness. He has also made clear that technical readiness alone is not enough: Mazda still needs a convincing business case.
The proposed sports-car system should not be confused with the rotary engine in the Mazda MX-30 R-EV. The MX-30 uses a small 830-cc single-rotor engine as a range extender. It generates electricity and does not mechanically drive the wheels.
The ICONIC SP, by contrast, is described as using two rotors and electric propulsion. Mazda has also left open the possibility that a future sports car could use a different hybrid arrangement, potentially including a mechanical connection between the engine and wheels. No production layout has been finalized.

Will it really be called the RX-9?
It might, but there is no official confirmation. Mazda’s documented rotary sports-car history includes the RX-7 and RX-8, which explains why “RX-9” is a natural label for a potential successor. However, the name is currently a media and enthusiast shorthand rather than a confirmed model designation.

The RX-7’s final Spirit R series was announced in 2002, and production of the FD-generation RX-7 was scheduled to end in August of that year. A future rotary sports car could revive the RX branding, but Mazda is not obligated to use the RX-9 name—or to make the next car a direct RX-7 successor.
Design and expected layout
The ICONIC SP is the strongest visual clue available. It has a low roofline, compact sports-car proportions, Mazda’s Kodo design language, and a two-seat-style layout. Its proportions are consistent with a lightweight, driver-focused coupe or similar sports car.
That does not mean a production model would copy the concept exactly. Mazda has not confirmed the final body style, seating capacity, exterior panels, interior, doors, lighting, or the concept’s pop-up-style headlight treatment. Production requirements, crash regulations, cost, and packaging could significantly change the finished vehicle.
The MAZDA VISION X-COUPE, shown at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, is a separate concept. Mazda presented it as a vision for 2035 and beyond. It uses a two-rotor rotary turbo engine in a plug-in-hybrid system and claims 510 PS, but it is not the RX-9 and its output should not be attributed to the possible sports car.

Release date and production timeline
Mazda has announced no production or sales date. Earlier reports suggested a possible 2026 production start, but subsequent comments emphasized that emissions compliance, cost, packaging, and commercial viability would determine whether and when the project proceeds.
There is currently no verified Mazda announcement saying the RX-9 will debut in late 2026, launch in 2027, or enter production on any other specific date. A report that gives 2027 as a firm on-sale year is making a prediction, not citing a confirmed Mazda schedule.

There is no confirmed RX-9 price. Mazda executives have stressed that affordability is central to the project. A rotary sports car has to be technically feasible and commercially viable; an expensive low-volume halo car would not automatically satisfy that requirement.

Potential rivals could include the Nissan Z, Toyota GR Supra, Toyota GR86, or Porsche 718, depending on the final Mazda’s size, output, drivetrain, price, and positioning. Those comparisons remain provisional. A 370-PS hybrid sports car would occupy a different space from a lightweight naturally aspirated coupe, even if the cars shared similar dimensions or prices.

Common Mazda RX-9 claims checked
- “The 2026 Mazda RX-9 is confirmed.”
Incorrect. Mazda has not confirmed the RX-9 name or a production launch. - “It will use a twin-turbo rotary.”
Unverified. Mazda has confirmed two-rotor rotary technology for the ICONIC SP concept, not a twin-turbo production engine. - “The RX-9 will make 365 or 370 horsepower.”
Misleading. The approximately 365-hp figure repeated in some coverage and Mazda’s 370-PS figure belong to concept reporting and Mazda’s 2025 corporate material. Neither is a confirmed production rating. - “It will launch in 2027.”
Unverified. Mazda has published no official launch date. - “The ICONIC SP is already the RX-9.”
Incorrect. The ICONIC SP is an official concept. RX-9 is an unofficial name for a possible production successor.
What would need to happen before an RX-9 becomes real?
- Mazda would need to approve a business case for the sports car.
- The rotary powertrain would need to meet applicable emissions requirements, including those relevant to the intended markets.
- Mazda would need to finalize the hybrid layout, battery packaging, cooling system, transmission, and drive wheels.
- The company would need to replace concept figures with production specifications and complete certification testing.
- Mazda would then need to announce the model name, manufacturing plan, price, markets, and sales timing.
Until those steps are publicly documented, the responsible way to describe the car is as a possible future Mazda rotary sports car—not as an already confirmed RX-9.
FAQ
Is the Mazda RX-9 confirmed?
No. As of August 8, 2026, Mazda has not confirmed a production vehicle named the RX-9, a launch date, price, specifications, or U.S. availability.
What is the MAZDA ICONIC SP?
The ICONIC SP is a Mazda sports-car concept unveiled in 2023. It uses a two-rotor Rotary-EV system in which the rotary engine generates electricity and electric motors drive the vehicle.
How much power will the Mazda RX-9 have?
There is no confirmed RX-9 power rating. Mazda’s 370-PS figure applies to the ICONIC SP concept and should not be presented as a production RX-9 specification.
When will the Mazda RX-9 go on sale?
Mazda has not announced a sales date. Claims that it will launch in 2026 or 2027 are speculative unless Mazda officially confirms them.
The Bottom Line
The Mazda RX-9 remains a possibility, not a confirmed production car. Mazda is actively developing rotary technology, and the 370-PS, two-rotor ICONIC SP concept shows a credible direction for a future sports car. But the RX-9 name, drivetrain, price, performance, release date, and availability are all unconfirmed. Until Mazda announces a production model, treat detailed RX-9 specifications and 2027 launch claims as speculation.
