Tesla’s 2024 recall covers certain 2016 Model X vehicles whose front or center roof trim may detach while driving. Owners should check their vehicle identification number (VIN) for an open recall and, if affected, arrange Tesla service. The adhesion inspection and reattachment are free; a repair under the earlier 2020 campaign does not replace the new inspection.
Which Model X vehicles are covered?
NHTSA campaign 24V-615 covers 9,136 potentially affected 2016 Tesla Model X vehicles built from September 17, 2015, through July 31, 2016. That is the reported production range, not a way to determine whether a particular vehicle has an open recall: check its VIN. The recall is limited to certain Model X vehicles and does not cover every Model X or every Tesla.
The recall was reported by Tesla on August 15, 2024, and acknowledged by NHTSA on August 20, 2024. NHTSA’s campaign record provides the campaign details.
What does “come unglued” mean?
The affected parts are the front roof applique behind the windshield and the center applique, or “spine,” between the upper falcon-door roof glass. These are trim pieces bonded to the vehicle with urethane. Tesla said that primer may have been omitted at the bonding interface, allowing adhesion to weaken over time.

- Compatible With:Tesla Model X 2016-2021
- OE:103528800H
- Product advantages: Easy to install,one-person operation.Difficult to deform or break, with a long service life. Protects the vehicle body from mud, stones and debris while driving.
- Installation Method:The fender trim come with clips, direct replacement,no drilling.
- Note: Please confirm the installation positions of the fender trims(front or rear), vehicle production year, and OEM in advance to make sure the fender trim is suitable for your vehicle.
If an applique separates while the vehicle is moving, it could become a road hazard for other motorists and increase the risk of a crash. Tesla’s filing said it was not aware of related crashes, injuries, or deaths at the time it reported the recall.
Tesla identified a possible warning sign: “Prior to separating, an applique without primer may create a detectable noise inside the cabin for either a short or prolonged period of time.” A noise is not a substitute for a VIN check or a service inspection.

What should owners do?
- Check the VIN. Use the NHTSA campaign record and its recall lookup guidance to see whether an unrepaired recall applies to your vehicle. You can also contact Tesla to verify the vehicle’s status.
- Arrange Tesla service if the recall is open. Tesla service will test roof-trim adhesion and reattach trim pieces as necessary, free of charge.
- Do not try to perform the recall repair yourself. The official remedy is a Tesla service inspection and, as needed, reattachment. The recall record does not recommend owner-applied adhesive, primer, pulling, or replacement trim.
Why does the 2024 recall apply after the 2020 recall?
Tesla’s earlier campaign, 20V-710, addressed the same roof-applique issue. Its remedy used an adhesion-retention inspection and primer application where needed. In its later review, Tesla said that the earlier inspection’s pull force or the locations and number of pull applications were not sufficient to identify every applique at risk.
As a result, a completed 20V-710 repair does not count as completion of 24V-615. NHTSA says vehicles repaired under the earlier campaign still need the new inspection and remedy. That does not mean every vehicle repaired in 2020 was necessarily defective; it means the earlier inspection is not a substitute for the current campaign’s required work.

In its filing, Tesla estimated that 10% of the potentially affected vehicles had the defect. This is the manufacturer’s estimate, not a confirmed-failure rate.
