The Tesla Model S Plaid’s “1,000 horses” and roughly $130,000 price tag refer to its June 2021 US launch coverage—not a current asking price. Tesla’s current US specifications list 1,020 hp, but the company says Model S is no longer in production and directs shoppers to pre-owned inventory.
How much horsepower does the Tesla Model S Plaid have?
Tesla currently lists the Model S Plaid with a tri-motor powertrain and 1,020 hp peak power. That is the source of the “1,000 horses” shorthand in the launch-era headline. The figure is a manufacturer specification, not an independent measurement. Tesla’s US Model S page also lists 368 miles of EPA-estimated range, a 1.99-second 0–60 mph time and a 9.23-second quarter-mile.
Top speed depends on an upgrade
Tesla lists a 200 mph top speed only with a paid hardware upgrade. Without that upgrade, Tesla lists the maximum at 163 mph. The qualification matters: 200 mph is not the standard top speed for every Plaid.
What did the Model S Plaid cost when it launched?
The approximately $130,000 figure belongs to June 2021 US launch coverage. The Washington Post reported that the car was listed at about $130,000 on Tesla’s website before potential savings. Engadget reported a $130,000 starting price after a $10,000 increase. The accounts differ slightly in wording, but both describe the launch period.

That figure should not be read as today’s price. In April 2023, Electrek reported a later price of $104,990. That, too, is historical—not a current quote.
Can you buy a Model S Plaid new today?
Tesla’s current US page says, “Model S is no longer in production. Pre-owned non-Signature Edition inventory vehicles may still be available.” That makes pre-owned inventory the relevant route to check; the statement does not establish that no used Plaid cars are available.

No current US pre-owned asking price is established here. Check Tesla’s live inventory or other current listings for availability and pricing, and confirm the specific car’s configuration and condition before comparing offers. Do not use the 2021 launch price or the 2023 reported price as a present-day valuation.

Tesla’s listed figures offer a snapshot of the Plaid’s published performance, not a guarantee of what every driver will record. The 368-mile range is EPA-estimated, and the acceleration, power, quarter-mile and top-speed figures are manufacturer specifications. Tesla also lists a maximum Supercharging rate of 250 kW; that is a stated peak rate, not a promise that every charging session will sustain it.
