Tesla recalled 2,431 model-year 2024 Cybertrucks in November 2024 after identifying a potentially faulty drive-unit inverter. This campaign required a physical replacement at a service location—not an over-the-air update—because the suspected defect involved propulsion hardware.
Tesla recalled 2,431 model-year 2024 Cybertrucks in November 2024 because a drive-unit inverter could fail and cause the truck to lose propulsion. Unlike some Tesla recall campaigns, this one could not be resolved with an over-the-air software update. The remedy required Tesla service technicians to replace the affected inverter with a component designed to avoid the identified failure mode.

This is a historical recall story: the matching report was published on November 13, 2024. Owners should use Tesla’s current VIN Recall Search or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s VIN Recall Search to determine whether a specific Cybertruck is covered. The recall is VIN-specific, so the reported production dates do not automatically mean every truck built during that period is affected.
What the Cybertruck recall involved
The recalled part was the drive-unit inverter, an electronic component in the truck’s propulsion system. Tesla’s investigation followed a Cybertruck that became stranded after an inverter malfunction. The company then identified five additional failures or warranty claims that might have been related.

The reported affected production window ran from November 6, 2023, through July 30, 2024. Tesla planned to begin replacing the affected inverters on December 9, 2024. The replacement components were designed to address the quality issue associated with the original units.
An inverter converts and controls electrical power for the vehicle’s drive motor or motors. Because it is part of the propulsion hardware, a failure can be more consequential than a defect involving an information display or a convenience feature. In the reported incident, the failure left the Cybertruck unable to continue driving.
Why there was no software fix
“No software fix” describes the remedy, not a general limitation of Tesla vehicles. Tesla has handled some separate Cybertruck recalls through software updates, including campaigns involving the rearview-camera display and front parking-lamp behavior. Those issues concerned vehicle logic or compliance behavior that could be changed electronically.
The inverter campaign was different. Software can alter how a vehicle monitors, controls, or reports a system, but it cannot replace a defective physical inverter. The remedy therefore required an installed component replacement at a service location.
That distinction also does not mean an over-the-air recall is automatically less serious. A recall’s remedy depends on the cause of the defect: some problems can be corrected by changing code, while others require a physical part, wiring repair, inspection, or mechanical work.

What the repair involved
This was not an owner-maintenance job or a simple plug-in replacement. Tesla’s Cybertruck service documentation describes a procedure involving diagnostic-tool interaction, vehicle-power disconnection, mid-voltage or high-voltage safety precautions, coolant handling, leak testing, inverter replacement, and post-repair checks.
The relevant electrical systems can contain dangerous energy even when the vehicle is not moving. Tesla’s service documentation calls for appropriately trained technicians and suitable personal protective equipment. Owners should not attempt to reproduce the procedure with generic high-voltage tools, aftermarket parts, or instructions intended for a different vehicle.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The practical takeaway is straightforward: an affected owner should arrange the recall through Tesla rather than trying to source an inverter independently. Tesla’s recall information states that qualifying recall work is performed at no charge, regardless of the vehicle’s age or mileage.
What Cybertruck owners should do
- Check the VIN. Use Tesla’s VIN Recall Search and, if needed, the NHTSA VIN Recall Search. A general production date or model year is not enough to establish coverage.
- Read the recall details. Confirm that the result refers to the drive-unit inverter campaign, rather than a different Cybertruck recall involving another component.
- Schedule the repair with Tesla. Follow Tesla’s instructions for arranging the free recall remedy. Availability and scheduling may vary by location.
- Do not diagnose or repair the high-voltage system yourself. The inverter replacement requires trained personnel, specialized equipment, and safety procedures.
- Stop and seek guidance if the truck cannot be safely driven. If the Cybertruck displays propulsion warnings, loses drive capability, or becomes immobilized, contact Tesla roadside or service support instead of continuing to drive it or attempting to reach a service center under its own power.
The available recall information supports the possibility of an immobilizing inverter failure, but it does not provide a universal owner-facing symptom checklist. A warning message—or the absence of one—should not be treated as a reliable way to determine whether a truck is covered. The VIN lookup is the appropriate first check.
Is every 2024 Cybertruck affected?
No. The campaign covered a defined group of vehicles, and recall applicability is determined by VIN. The reported production window identifies when potentially affected vehicles were built; it does not establish that every Cybertruck produced during those dates has the defect.

The 2,431-vehicle inverter campaign belongs to the November 2024 recall news cycle. It should not be presented as the latest Cybertruck recall in 2026.
For example, a separate recall dated April 20, 2026 involved a brake rotor on certain 2024–2026 Cybertrucks equipped with 18-inch steel wheels. That was a different component, a different vehicle population, and a different recall campaign. Tesla’s VIN recall information also displayed recall data dated June 23, 2026 in the retrieved material. Owners checking their trucks today should review all VIN-specific results rather than relying on an older news report.

Tesla’s November 2024 recall covered 2,431 reported model-year 2024 Cybertrucks with potentially faulty drive-unit inverters. The unusual part was the remedy: this was a physical propulsion-hardware problem, so Tesla had to replace the inverter instead of sending an over-the-air update.
Owners should check their truck’s VIN through Tesla or NHTSA and schedule any required recall work through Tesla. If the vehicle has lost propulsion or cannot be operated safely, use Tesla’s roadside or service guidance. Do not attempt a high-voltage inverter replacement yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is every 2024 Cybertruck included in the inverter recall?
No. The recall was limited to specific VINs within a reported November 6, 2023, through July 30, 2024, production window. Owners must use Tesla’s or NHTSA’s VIN recall lookup to confirm coverage.
Why couldn’t Tesla fix this recall with an over-the-air update?
No. The inverter is physical propulsion hardware, so the remedy required trained technicians to replace it. Software can correct certain logic or display problems but cannot replace a failed component.
Does Tesla charge for the Cybertruck inverter recall repair?
Tesla’s recall information says qualifying recall repairs are free regardless of vehicle age or mileage. Owners should confirm the campaign through the VIN lookup and schedule the repair with Tesla.
What should I do if my Cybertruck cannot drive?
If the Cybertruck shows propulsion warnings, loses drive capability, or becomes immobilized, follow Tesla’s roadside or service instructions rather than continuing to drive it or attempting a high-voltage repair.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The November 2024 campaign covered 2,431 model-year 2024 Cybertrucks with potentially faulty drive-unit inverters. It required a free physical replacement by trained service technicians—not an over-the-air software update. Coverage is VIN-specific, so owners should check Tesla’s or NHTSA’s recall lookup and avoid driving a truck that has lost propulsion or cannot be operated safely.
