A Tesla Model Y owner told Tech Times that a loss of power left her unable to unlock the doors or open the windows until roadside assistance texted her how to use a manual release. Tesla’s manuals describe a way to open a front door without power, but the location and availability of rear-door releases depend on the vehicle. Owners should learn the procedure in the manual for their own Model Y before they need it.
What the Model Y owner reported
In a June 20, 2024 report, Tech Times said an Arizona woman who had owned a Model Y for about three years got into the car, closed the door and then found that the vehicle had shut down. She said she could not open the windows or unlock the doors. She tried to consult the owner’s manual but could not open the glove box, then contacted a neighbor and requested roadside assistance through the Tesla app. According to the report, roadside assistance texted instructions for a manual latch, and she got out.
The outlet quoted her saying, “I unplugged the car, got inside, shut the door, and everything just shut down. I couldn’t open the windows. I couldn’t unlock the doors. I was trapped.” She also described the experience as “scary and very unnerving.” The report does not identify the car’s exact model year or provide diagnostic evidence explaining why it lost power; it is an account of one owner’s experience, not a technical investigation. How to open a Model Y door if the car loses power
Front doors
Tesla’s North American 2025+ Model Y manual says to pull up the manual door release in front of the window switches to open a front door when the vehicle has no power. The 2020–2024 manual describes the front release in the same location. Check the manual that matches your vehicle’s year and configuration rather than relying on instructions for a different Model Y. Rear doors
Rear-door release equipment and instructions vary. For equipped 2020–2024 vehicles, Tesla instructs owners to remove the mat at the bottom of the rear-door pocket, press the red tab to remove the access door, and pull the mechanical release cable forward. Tesla explicitly notes that not all 2020–2024 Model Y vehicles have a rear manual release. The current 2025+ manual also gives a mechanical-cable procedure, but owners should consult its specific instructions for their vehicle. Important cautions before using a manual release
- Tesla says to use the manual release only when the vehicle has no power or when otherwise necessary; do not use it while the vehicle is moving.
- The window does not automatically lower when the manual release opens the door. Tesla warns that opening it this way could damage the window or trim.
- Rear-release availability is not universal, so do not assume that a procedure or cable shown for another Model Y applies to yours.
These cautions and the release procedures are in Tesla’s 2025+ manual and 2020–2024 manual.

If you have questions about your vehicle’s specific equipment, use Tesla’s guidance for its model year and configuration. The incident illustrates why knowing the release location in advance is more useful than trying to find instructions after the car has lost power.
