Happy Days: What Motorcycle Did Fonzie Ride, and Where Is It Today?

Fonzie’s first-season motorcycle was a 1947 Harley-Davidson Knucklehead; the later, better-known bike was a customized 1949 Triumph Trophy TR5. Here is what is known about each bike’s whereabouts.

Fonzie rode two different motorcycles on Happy Days: a 1947 Harley-Davidson Knucklehead in the first season, followed by smaller Triumphs. The bike most associated with him was a customized 1949 Triumph Trophy TR5, also called a Trophy 500. The Harley was reported owned by Ohio collector George Roeder Jr. in 2023; the surviving screen-used Triumph sold at auction in 2021, and its present owner and location have not been established by the sources cited here.

Which motorcycles did Fonzie ride?

The show began with a 1947 Harley-Davidson Knucklehead, then shifted to smaller motorcycles. The later-series bike most closely identified with Fonzie was a 1949 Triumph Trophy TR5, commonly described as a Trophy 500. The model change matters: there was not one motorcycle used throughout the series.

Question First-season Harley Later-series Triumph
Model 1947 Harley-Davidson Knucklehead, according to OnMilwaukee (2023). 1949 Triumph Trophy TR5, or Trophy 500, according to WIRED (2011).
Why it changed Reportedly too large for Henry Winkler to ride comfortably; the production moved to smaller motorcycles, according to OnMilwaukee (2023). It was one of the smaller motorcycles used later in the series, according to OnMilwaukee (2023).
Reported screen customization The production changed it from a hand-shifter to a foot-shifter, according to OnMilwaukee (2023). Bud Ekins removed the front fender, painted the fuel tank silver, and changed the handlebars, according to WIRED (2011).
Best-sourced whereabouts Reported owned and restored by George Roeder Jr. in 2023; that report does not confirm ownership today. OnMilwaukee (2023). Sold at auction in 2021; later owner and location are not established in the cited coverage. ClassicCars.com Journal (2021).

Where is Fonzie’s Harley-Davidson today?

OnMilwaukee reported in February 2023 that George Roeder Jr., a former flat-track racer from Monroeville, Ohio, owned and had restored the 1947 Harley to its Happy Days appearance. Roeder had traced its chain of custody through a series of trades and brought it to Milwaukee’s Mama Tried motorcycle show that month. The account said he had ridden the bike and planned to ride it again. This establishes a reported owner and Ohio connection as of 2023, not a verified 2026 ownership or location check.

Where is the Triumph Trophy today?

The surviving custom Triumph was sold by Bonhams in December 2021. ClassicCars.com Journal reported the sale result as $231,562 including buyer’s fee. That is the last known location in the cited coverage: an auction sale. The reporting does not identify the winning buyer or establish where the motorcycle is now, so it should not be described as currently being at the Petersen Automotive Museum or any other specific place.

How many Triumphs were used?

ANSA reported in 2021 that three similar Triumph motorcycles were used during filming and remained the property of Ekins, who rented them to the production. Its account said two later disappeared and the surviving example eventually came to Bonhams. This is reported provenance rather than independently verified production documentation; the 2021 auction coverage identifies the sold bike as the series’ only surviving example.
