The complaint alleges that Samuel Tremblett survived a crash but could not escape when the car caught fire because its electric door handles failed and its manual releases were difficult to find. Those claims have not been tested in court.
What happened in the crash?
Boston.com reported that Samuel Tremblett, 20, died after a crash in Easton, Massachusetts, on October 29, 2025. According to the complaint as described in the report, he survived the initial crash, but the Model Y caught fire and he could not get out. The report says first responders could not remove him because of the severity of the fire and that firefighters spent four hours extinguishing it. Boston.com’s account attributes these details to the lawsuit; they are not court findings.
The complaint reportedly includes excerpts from a 911 transcript in which Tremblett said, “I’m stuck in a car crash,” and, “I can’t get out, please help me.” It also quotes him saying, “I can’t breathe. … It’s on fire … I’m going to die.” Boston.com reproduced these lines from the transcript included in the complaint; they have not been described here as independently authenticated.
What does the lawsuit allege about the door handles?
The complaint alleges that after electrical failure, the Model Y’s exterior handles would not extend, while the interior releases depended on electronic operation. It further alleges that manual releases were not clearly marked or intuitive for someone trying to escape quickly. The lawsuit’s central claim is that these features prevented Tremblett from leaving the burning vehicle.

These are allegations by the plaintiff, Jacquelyn Tremblett, not a ruling that Tesla’s design was defective or that the door system caused the death. Boston.com reported that the suit seeks $25 million in compensatory damages, a jury trial and attorney fees. Tesla did not return a request for comment to Boston.com, according to that report.
What is the status of Tremblett v. Tesla?
Jacquelyn Tremblett filed Tremblett v. Tesla, Inc., case No. 1:26-cv-10567, on February 4, 2026, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. The Justia docket listing displays an order granting Tesla until October 14, 2026, to answer. However, the listing says its docket information was last retrieved June 30, 2026. That makes the displayed extension the latest verifiable entry in that listing, not confirmation of the case’s complete status as of October 8, 2026.

What is the claim about earlier reports?
The complaint reportedly lists 17 cases dating back to 2016 in which Tesla received reports of adults and children trapped during thermal-runaway events. That number is an allegation in Tremblett’s complaint, as reported by Boston.com; it should not be read as an independently verified count or a finding that those cases involved the same circumstances.
How is this different from the other Tesla door-handle lawsuit?
A separate lawsuit in Washington state concerns Jeff and Wendy Dennis and a 2018 Model 3. The Associated Press reported that their complaint alleges the car suddenly accelerated, crashed and caught fire, and that door-handle problems obstructed bystanders trying to rescue the occupants. Wendy Dennis died and Jeff Dennis was injured. Those claims belong to a different case and do not establish the allegations in Tremblett’s lawsuit, or vice versa. The Associated Press reported on the Dennis case on November 25, 2025.

What is known about regulator scrutiny?
In its February 5, 2026, report, Boston.com said U.S. auto safety regulators were probing complaints about Tesla door handles. That is a report about the situation at that time; it does not establish the investigation’s status today. The lawsuit itself is also not a regulator’s finding about the safety of Tesla vehicles.
