Tesla’s Markham facility makes equipment used to manufacture batteries at Tesla Gigafactories; it is not a consumer battery-cell plant. Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti announced the project in November 2021, describing its location as south of Highway 7 and west of Warden. A commercial property report published September 29, 2026, identifies the facility at 95 Clegg Road, Markham.
What Tesla makes at the Markham facility
The facility’s stated role is to design and manufacture specialized equipment for battery production—not to build battery cells for sale or assemble Tesla vehicles. In his 2021 announcement, Mayor Frank Scarpitti said the site would produce manufacturing equipment for Tesla Gigafactories around the world. Electrek reported the announcement and reproduced the mayor’s statement.
Tesla later described the work in a 2023 submission to the House of Commons Finance Committee: its Markham and Richmond Hill manufacturing plants “design and engineer the battery assembly line equipment deployed to our factories around the globe.” Tesla’s submission attributes that work to both locations. In April 2025, Electric Mobility Canada described Tesla Toronto Automation’s work in Markham and Richmond Hill as conceptualizing, designing, engineering, machining, assembling, programming, and managing the in-house battery-cell manufacturing equipment used at Tesla Gigafactories. Electric Mobility Canada’s account is consistent with the distinction: the sites make the machinery, while the Gigafactories use it to manufacture batteries.
Where the Markham Tesla facility is
The original 2021 description placed the site south of Highway 7 and west of Warden Avenue. That was an area description, not a street address. A September 29, 2026 report by Connect CRE Canada identifies Tesla’s fully leased facility at 95 Clegg Road, Markham, Ontario. The address provides a more precise location than the mayor’s announcement; it comes from commercial property reporting, not the original announcement. Connect CRE’s property report identifies the building and its reported specifications.

- Charging Method: Recommended charging current is 0.6A, the maximum does not exceed 1.5A. The discharge current is recommended 0.6A, and the maximum does not exceed 1.5A
- Overcharge Protection: When charging the battery, when the voltage reaches the highest battery voltage (4.2V), the protection board will automatically power off and shut down, indicating that it will not continue to charge when fully charged, forms overcharge protection
- Over-discharge Protection: When the battery is about to run out and the voltage is as low as 3.0V, the protection board will also be turned off and can no longer be discharged, forming an over-discharge protection effect t
- Short Circuit Protection: When an accidental short circuit occurs, the protection board will automatically shut down within a few milliseconds and will not be powered on again. Note that the cell is short-circuited (not through the protection board). The protection board will also fail due to continuous high current, or the components are heated and damaged
- Widely Application: With JST 1.25 plug, these lithium polymer batteries can be used for development board whose plug is SH1.25-2, such as ESP32 LoRa V3, ESP32 LoRa V4, Wireless Tracker, Mesh Node T114, Mesh Node T096 and electronic devices
What is known about the building
Connect CRE reported that Tesla fully leases the 1998-built building and that it was upgraded for Tesla’s manufacturing use. The report listed the following property details:
| Property detail | Reported figure |
|---|---|
| Building area | 110,236 square feet |
| Site area | 5.33 acres |
| Electrical service | 3,000 amps |
| Clear height | 24 feet, 7 inches |
| Loading | Six dock-level doors |
| Parking | 112 spaces |
These are figures in Connect CRE’s September 2026 property report, not specifications published by Tesla. The report said Colliers was marketing the property for sale without disclosing an asking price; that marketing does not change the report’s statement that Tesla fully leases the facility.

- Durable and Reliable D Batteries: D batteries work well in temperatures ranging from -68°F to 140°F. Caring for the environment starts with rechargeable lithium-ion D batteries, which can save thousands of alkaline batteries and reduce landfill waste.
What has not been disclosed about the Markham site
Available reporting does not establish a Markham-only production capacity, direct employment count, project investment total, or volume of battery equipment produced. National company figures should not be treated as site figures: Electric Mobility Canada reported more than 1,400 people employed by Tesla in Canada and more than 250 Canadian-based industry suppliers in connection with Tesla’s Canadian manufacturing business, but neither number is specific to Markham. It also reported a $762 million Canadian GDP contribution based on a 2021 Tesla economic contribution assessment; that is a Canada-wide figure, not the Markham facility’s output. Electric Mobility Canada provides the scope and context for these national figures.
