What happened to the Scottish couple’s Model Y?
In October 2023, Carscoops reported that a Scottish couple’s Model Y would not start after they had driven it to dinner in Edinburgh during rainy weather. The owners said Tesla attributed the problem to water ingress and gave them a repair estimate of £17,374, described in the coverage at the time as roughly US$21,000. Carscoops’ account reports what the owners said they were told; it does not provide an independent engineering examination establishing the cause. The final repair cost, insurance decision and vehicle outcome are not established in that report.
The dollar figure is a rounded, contemporaneous conversion of the UK-pound estimate, not a current exchange-rate calculation or a price quote readers can use for a similar repair.
Does this prove heavy rain can damage a Tesla battery?
No. The account links the reported failure to a rainy drive and a water-ingress diagnosis, but it does not prove that rain alone caused the failure, explain how water entered the vehicle, or establish that the incident is typical. There is no named population statistic in the available sources showing how often ordinary rain causes EV battery damage.

A 2024 NHTSA-hosted teardown study examined ten surviving electric vehicles and reported that leaks observed in those vehicles were not extensive enough to cause catastrophic battery damage in the vehicles studied. That limited result does not show that water cannot damage an EV battery, and it says nothing conclusive about the Scottish Model Y. Does Tesla’s battery warranty cover water damage?
Tesla’s 2020–2024 Model Y Europe Owner’s Manual states: “Damage caused by water is not covered under warranty.” That wording is relevant to those manual editions, but it does not by itself determine the terms for every Model Y or settle whether the reported car’s failure should have been covered.

Tesla’s current UK warranty support page lists battery and drive-unit coverage for Model Y variants as follows. The stated capacity commitment is at least 70% battery-capacity retention during the warranty period; the time or mileage limit applies, whichever comes first.

These are the terms shown on Tesla’s UK support page, not a guarantee that every vehicle in every market or model year has those terms. Tesla says the warranty supplied with the individual vehicle is authoritative. Check that document for the exact model, variant, model year, market and purchase date before assessing a claim. What should you do if an EV has been flooded or submerged?
Tesla says to treat a vehicle exposed to flooding, extreme weather events or submersion—especially in salt water—as if it has been in an accident. Its UK guidance says to contact your insurer and not to operate the vehicle until an authorised shop has inspected it.
- Do not drive or energize the vehicle. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and wait for an authorised inspection before operating it.
- Contact your insurer. Tesla’s guidance directs owners of submerged vehicles to notify their insurer; coverage depends on the individual policy and circumstances.
- Keep the vehicle away from combustibles. Tesla advises towing a submerged vehicle at least 50 ft (15 m) from structures or other combustible materials.
- Arrange an authorised inspection. Ask for a written diagnosis and estimate that identify the affected components and the evidence supporting the water-ingress finding.
These instructions are for flooding, extreme-weather exposure or submersion; they do not establish that an ordinary wet-weather drive requires the same response. Why shouldn’t owners open or repair a high-voltage battery?
Tesla’s manual says the high-voltage system must be serviced only by a trained technician. It also tells owners not to open or tamper with the battery or disassemble, remove or replace high-voltage components, cables or connectors. Do not try to open, dry, repair or energize a battery yourself. The 2020–2024 Model Y Europe Owner’s Manual contains Tesla’s safety and water-damage guidance.
How to assess a water-damage repair estimate
The Scottish owners’ reported estimate is not an independent quote for another vehicle. If you receive a water-damage diagnosis, keep the decision grounded in your vehicle’s documents and the written findings:
