Tesla has ended production of the Model S and Model X, but it has not abandoned electric vehicles. The company is reallocating the Fremont factory space used by those two low-volume flagship models to an Optimus humanoid-robot production line while continuing to build and develop the Model 3, Model Y, Cybertruck, Semi, Cybercab and energy products.
The more accurate description is a strategic shift: Tesla is putting greater emphasis on artificial intelligence, supervised driving assistance, robotaxis and robotics. That is very different from leaving the EV business altogether.

What Tesla actually discontinued
Tesla’s current Model S page and Model X page both state that the vehicles are no longer in production. Remaining new, demonstration or pre-owned inventory may still be available, depending on country, location and delivery market.

Ending production is not the same as immediately removing every Model S and Model X from sale. It also does not mean existing owners suddenly lose service, warranty coverage or software support. Owners should check Tesla’s terms and the status of their specific vehicle rather than infer a support cutoff from the production decision.

Tesla’s January 2026 corporate filing still listed the two models among its manufacturing capacity. That document predates the subsequent wind-down, so Tesla’s current consumer pages and later filings are the better guide to their present status.
The Model S and X shutdown timeline
- January 28, 2026: Elon Musk said during Tesla’s Q4 2025 earnings call that production of the Model S and Model X would end in the second quarter of 2026.
- April 22, 2026: Tesla’s Q1 shareholder update said a first-generation Optimus production line would replace the Model S/X lines at Fremont.
- By mid-August 2026: Tesla’s consumer pages described both vehicles as no longer in production.
Tesla has not publicly established a specific final production day in the supplied disclosures. The responsible description is that production ended during the planned Q2 2026 wind-down and that both models are now listed as no longer in production.
Why is Tesla giving the factory space to Optimus?
The directly stated reason is factory-space reallocation. Tesla plans to convert the Fremont area used for Model S and Model X into an Optimus production facility. The company says the first-generation line is designed for planned capacity of up to one million robots annually.

Reusing an existing automotive site could be faster and less expensive than building an entirely new factory. Fremont already has logistics, suppliers, labor and manufacturing expertise. Ending two specialized vehicle programs also simplifies Tesla’s product lineup and frees capacity for a project the company considers strategically important.
However, one million robots per year is planned capacity, not current output or confirmed demand. Tesla’s filing describes production preparation and a planned ramp, not an operating factory producing that volume.

Is Tesla shifting from EVs to robots?
Strategically, yes. Literally, no.
Tesla’s filings identify artificial intelligence, FSD, Robotaxi and Optimus as major priorities. Its 2025 annual report also projected 2026 capital expenditure above $20 billion, driven partly by AI infrastructure, compute and related facilities.
At the same time, Tesla remains an EV manufacturer. Model 3 and Model Y production continues, while Cybertruck remains in the lineup. Tesla also continues to develop the Semi and Cybercab, and it remains active in batteries, charging and energy storage. Tesla’s Q1 2026 filing described vehicle production alongside its AI and robotics programs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThat makes “Tesla is no longer an EV company” inaccurate. A better interpretation is that Tesla is trying to become a multi-business platform company. Vehicles provide manufacturing scale, hardware, data and an installed fleet that Tesla says supports its autonomy strategy. The company hopes autonomy, software, energy and robots will eventually add larger or recurring revenue streams.
What is Optimus supposed to do?
Tesla describes Optimus as a general-purpose bipedal robot intended for unsafe, repetitive, boring or labor-intensive tasks. Its AI and Robotics page discusses capabilities such as perception, balance, navigation and interaction with the physical world.
Those statements describe Tesla’s product vision. They do not establish that Optimus is currently available for consumers, what it will cost, or how reliably it can perform unpredictable tasks outside controlled environments.

There is a major difference between:
- Internal testing;
- Limited factory pilots;
- Commercial customer deployments;
- A robot that customers can order; and
- Mass-market autonomous operation around people.
The supplied sources support development and production preparation. They do not prove broad commercial deployment or a working consumer product.
Why might Tesla prefer robots to luxury EVs?
This is an analysis of the strategic logic, not a confirmed prediction of Tesla’s results.
- A larger theoretical market: Robots could eventually serve factories, warehouses, logistics, healthcare, retail and homes.
- Recurring revenue: Robots might be sold, leased or provided as a service rather than generating revenue only at the initial vehicle sale.
- Software leverage: Tesla hopes its computer-vision, neural-network and autonomy expertise can transfer from cars to robots.
- Manufacturing synergies: Batteries, motors, power electronics and mass-production experience could be useful in robotics.
- More strategic optionality: A robot platform could serve multiple industries rather than a single vehicle segment.
Humanoid robots also introduce difficult problems that cars do not solve automatically. They must manipulate objects, recover from unexpected situations, operate safely near people and achieve reliable performance at a commercially viable cost.
What Tesla loses by ending Model S and Model X
The decision is significant because these were not ordinary products in Tesla’s history. Model S established Tesla as a serious premium electric-car maker, while Model X extended that image into the luxury SUV market.
The two vehicles served as technology showcases for range, acceleration, software, charging and distinctive design. Their removal leaves Tesla without a conventionally produced flagship sedan or luxury SUV that directly replaces the same experience.

Tesla’s own pages describe the Model S and Model X as part of the company’s transition to electric transportation. Ending them therefore has both practical and symbolic consequences: Tesla gains factory capacity for Optimus, but gives up product diversity and an established premium offering.
What remains in Tesla’s EV lineup?
Availability varies by market and date, but Tesla’s continuing vehicle categories include:
- Model 3: The current sedan alternative, though it is not a direct replacement for the larger and more luxurious Model S.
- Model Y: The practical crossover alternative, but not a direct substitute for the size, seating and premium positioning of Model X.
- Cybertruck: A radically different electric pickup with different use cases and ownership trade-offs.
- Tesla Semi: A commercial electric-truck program.
- Cybercab: An autonomy-focused vehicle program.
Tesla continues to invest in charging, batteries and energy storage as well. The company’s Q1 2026 filing describes continuing vehicle production and development alongside Optimus and other AI products.

Considering a remaining Model S or Model X?
A remaining or used example may appeal to buyers who specifically want the discontinued body style, performance or range. Tesla’s pages list advertised Model S specifications of up to 410 miles of EPA-estimated range and Model X specifications of up to 352 miles, but those figures describe available or legacy configurations—not ongoing production.
Recommended Free Tools
Check local inventory, warranty coverage, insurance, parts availability and the vehicle identification number. Used buyers should also investigate battery condition, accident history, repair records and expected depreciation. A discontinued model may offer an attractive price, but it does not provide the certainty of an actively produced vehicle.

Want a Tesla that is still in production?
Model 3 and Model Y are the most natural choices for buyers who want a current-production Tesla. They are not replacements in every respect, so buyers seeking Model S performance or Model X seating and cargo characteristics may need to compare other brands or consider used inventory.
Considering FSD?
Tesla’s ordering language describes FSD Supervised as requiring active driver supervision. It is not autonomous driving, and availability, pricing and features can change by market. A subscription signal of $99 per month appeared on a U.S. Tesla order page when crawled, but buyers should verify the current price and eligibility before purchasing.
Does the factory conversion prove Tesla’s future is robotics?
No. It proves that Tesla is committing factory space and capital to robotics.
It does not prove that Optimus can perform general-purpose work reliably, that Tesla can reach its planned production scale, that customers will pay the expected price, or that robot revenue will replace vehicle revenue. It also does not resolve safety, liability, regulatory, supplier or manufacturing challenges.
The key test will be execution. Investors and business customers should look for evidence of repeatable tasks outside demonstrations, robots in real internal use, production-line progress, supplier readiness, unit economics, safety performance, customer pilots and disclosed commercial orders. Capacity without demand is not a business.
The bottom line for Tesla’s strategy
Tesla is ending two legacy EV programs to make room for a much bigger bet on autonomy and robotics. The Fremont conversion is real, and the Model S and Model X are no longer in production. But the claim that Tesla is abandoning electric vehicles is an oversimplification.
Tesla is still building and developing EVs. What is changing is the balance of attention and investment: fewer conventional flagship cars, more AI infrastructure, robotaxis and Optimus. Whether that becomes a successful transformation depends not on the ambition of the robot plan, but on whether Tesla can turn prototypes and planned capacity into safe, useful products that customers will actually buy.
