Tesla canceled its planned Cybertruck range extender, an optional battery pack designed to sit in the pickup bed. It was not a component needed to operate the truck. Futurism reported on May 9, 2025, that reservation holders were told the $16,000 accessory would not be sold and that their $2,000 deposits would be refunded. Tesla did not give an official reason in the cited report. More recent delivery reporting offers only an imperfect proxy for Cybertruck sales, not a model-specific count.
What Tesla canceled
The range extender was a planned bed-mounted battery pack intended to increase the Cybertruck’s driving range. Futurism reported that Tesla had abandoned the accessory and that customers who paid a reservation fee received cancellation emails promising refunds. Although the accessory was described as a key Cybertruck component in coverage, it was optional equipment—not a core part required for the truck to function. Its cancellation meant the planned extra battery would not be offered, rather than that Tesla canceled the Cybertruck itself.
Why did Tesla cancel the Cybertruck range extender?
Tesla’s reason was not stated in the cited cancellation report. Low demand, the accessory’s price, production challenges, or pressure on Cybertruck sales may be raised as possible context, but none is established there as Tesla’s explanation. It would be inaccurate to present any of them as the confirmed cause.

Did Tesla refund Cybertruck range-extender deposits?
According to Futurism, customers who had paid a $2,000 reservation fee received notice that the extender would no longer be sold and that their deposits would be refunded. This describes what the report said reservation holders were told; it does not independently verify the status of each customer’s refund.
How much range was the extender supposed to add?
Futurism reported that Tesla’s announced range target for the Cybertruck with the extender changed from 470 miles to 445 miles, and that the expected timing had slipped to mid-2025 before the cancellation. How many Cybertrucks did Tesla sell?
The cited delivery coverage does not provide a Cybertruck-specific count. Tesla’s October 2, 2026 delivery release reported more than 486,000 total vehicle deliveries for Q3 2026, but that company-wide total cannot establish how many Cybertrucks were delivered. Electrek reported 8,295 deliveries in Tesla’s “Other Models” category for Q3 2026, down 48% year over year, and noted that Tesla does not disclose Cybertruck deliveries separately. The May 2025 cancellation and the Q3 2026 category data are separate snapshots. The later category decline supplies sales context, but it does not prove why Tesla canceled the accessory or quantify Cybertruck sales on its own.
