Milhagem UFMG BE of Brazil’s Federal University of Minas Gerais won the 2026 Shell Eco-marathon Brasil Prototype Battery-Electric class with 401 km/kWh, establishing a new Brazilian category record. The result improved the previous Brazilian battery-electric benchmark of 381 km/kWh. It is not a world record: Shell’s current competition overview lists the world efficiency record as 3,771 km/l, a figure measured in the internal-combustion category and therefore not directly comparable with a battery result.

The same Brazilian event produced a 556 km/l Prototype Internal Combustion victory for Drop Team of IFRS Erechim, while the leading European final produced substantially different results because it used separate classes, energy sources and competition conditions.

What new record did the Shell Eco-marathon winner set?

Milhagem UFMG BE set the new Brazilian Prototype Battery-Electric record at 401 km/kWh during Shell Eco-marathon Brasil 2026. Shell Brasil’s event report identifies the previous Brazilian mark as 381 km/kWh, so the Minas Gerais team raised the national benchmark by 20 km/kWh.

That distinction matters. “Record” here means a national result in one vehicle class and one energy category: Brazil, Prototype, battery-electric. It does not mean that the car traveled 401 kilometers on a single kilowatt-hour in ordinary road use, nor that it surpassed every Shell Eco-marathon result worldwide.

The 2026 Brazilian event marked ten years of Shell Eco-marathon competition in the country. It brought together 46 teams and more than 500 students from Brazil, Colombia, Mexico and Peru, making the result part of a broader engineering contest rather than a consumer-car fuel-economy test.

Who won the Shell Eco-marathon Brasil 2026 classes?

Brazil’s 2026 winners came from different universities and competed in different combinations of class and energy source. Their figures should be read within those categories, not as one overall ranking.

Class and energy source Winning team Result What the result means
Prototype Battery-Electric Milhagem UFMG BE, Federal University of Minas Gerais 401 km/kWh New Brazilian battery-electric Prototype record
Prototype Internal Combustion Drop Team, IFRS Erechim 556 km/l 2026 Brazilian class-winning result; the team’s 2023 national record remains 716 km/l
Urban Concept Internal Combustion Milhagem UFMG BE 65 km/l Brazilian Urban Concept internal-combustion class win
Urban Concept Battery-Electric Green E-Car, UTFPR Medianeira 58 km/kWh Brazilian Urban Concept battery-electric class win

Drop Team’s 556 km/l was its sixth Brazilian title, according to the event coverage. It was a winning 2026 performance, but it did not replace the team’s cited national best: 716 km/l set in 2023. Keeping those two numbers separate prevents a class victory from being mistaken for a new record.

How did Milhagem UFMG BE improve the Brazilian battery record?

The published result establishes the outcome, but it does not provide a component-by-component explanation of the 20 km/kWh improvement over the 381 km/kWh benchmark. The defensible conclusion is therefore limited: the team achieved a valid 401 km/kWh result under the event’s 2026 conditions, and that result became the new Brazilian Prototype Battery-Electric mark.

Is the 401 km/kWh result a world record?

No. It is a Brazilian national record for the Prototype Battery-Electric category. Shell’s Brazil competition overview lists the world efficiency record as 3,771 km/l, which uses liters as the unit and belongs to a different energy category.

Claim Geography Class and energy source Figure
New record set in 2026 Brazil Prototype battery-electric 401 km/kWh
Previous Brazilian benchmark Brazil, 2024 Prototype battery-electric 381 km/kWh
World efficiency record listed by Shell World Competition overview lists the result in internal-combustion units 3,771 km/l

Kilometers per kilowatt-hour and kilometers per liter are not interchangeable measurements. A battery car’s figure describes distance per unit of electrical energy, while a combustion car’s figure describes distance per liter of liquid fuel. Converting between them would require assumptions about fuel energy content, charging losses, battery voltage and other test boundaries that are not supplied for these results.

What is the difference between Prototype and Urban Concept?

Prototype vehicles are built around maximum efficiency, while Urban Concept vehicles are intended to be closer to a usable city car. Both are official Shell Eco-marathon classes, but their design targets make direct comparisons misleading.

Prototype

Prototype teams can prioritize low mass, very low aerodynamic drag, careful rolling resistance and a driving strategy optimized for the course. The result may look unlike a conventional car because the class rewards extracting the greatest distance from the least energy.

Urban Concept

Urban Concept vehicles are shaped by a more road-car-like brief. Their packaging, access and driving position are intended to resemble a practical urban vehicle more closely than a streamlined prototype. That additional usability focus generally creates different efficiency compromises, so a lower Urban Concept number is not evidence that its team engineered poorly.

How does Shell Eco-marathon scoring work?

A valid run rewards the greatest distance for the least energy consumed. Shell describes three energy-source categories: internal combustion, battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cells. The event then separates those energy sources across the Prototype and Urban Concept vehicle classes.

  1. Choose a class: the team enters either Prototype or Urban Concept, each with its own design priorities.
  2. Choose an energy source: the entry competes as internal combustion, battery-electric or hydrogen fuel cell.
  3. Pass technical requirements: vehicles must satisfy the event’s inspection and operating rules before a result can count.
  4. Complete the run: the vehicle covers the required course while officials record distance and energy consumption.
  5. Validate the result: only a valid run can determine the class result; weather, technical inspection and other event conditions affect what can be accepted.

The published winner figures do not provide one universal road-speed, temperature or wind adjustment. A result should therefore be reported with its event, year, class, energy source and geography attached.

How should km/l, km/kWh and km/m³ be read?

The unit identifies the energy source being evaluated. Higher numbers indicate more distance per stated unit within the same category, but the units are not directly comparable across categories.

Unit Energy source Used for
km/l Liquid fuel Internal-combustion entries
km/kWh Electricity Battery-electric entries
km/m³ Hydrogen gas Hydrogen fuel-cell entries

For example, 401 km/kWh is the correct way to describe Milhagem UFMG BE’s Brazilian result. Calling it 401 km/l would change the measurement and falsely imply a liquid-fuel record. Likewise, European hydrogen results reported in km/m³ should remain in that unit.

How did the 2026 European final compare with Brazil?

The 2026 European final took place at Silesia Ring in Kamień Śląski, Poland, with about 1,500 students from Europe and Africa. Its winners show why a geography-and-category label is essential: the European figures come from a separate final and are not replacements for Brazil’s national records.

European class Winning team Result
Prototype Internal Combustion TIM Prototype, France 1,847.82 km/l
Prototype Hydrogen Lausitz Dynamics, Germany 1,150.63 km/m³
Prototype Battery-Electric Polyjoule, France 1,094.89 km/kWh
Urban Concept Internal Combustion DTU Roadrunners, Denmark 330.86 km/l
Urban Concept Hydrogen Cityjoule, France 322.77 km/m³
Urban Concept Battery-Electric SZEnergy Team, Hungary 332.32 km/kWh

On the same European event weekend, the CTU Green Gliders team separately reported 538 km/kWh with its electric prototype. The team attributed that improvement to a lighter and more aerodynamic design, a self-developed battery-management system, a new electric motor and improved telemetry. Its reported figure should not be confused with the official Prototype Battery-Electric winning result of 1,094.89 km/kWh from Polyjoule.

Why are the European and Brazilian numbers so different?

The gap is not evidence that one country’s students are automatically better engineers. The events use different courses, conditions, technical environments and fields of entrants, and the figures come from distinct class results. Even within one country, Prototype and Urban Concept numbers differ because the vehicles are designed for different purposes.

Energy-unit differences also matter. A km/kWh result can only be compared fairly with another km/kWh result after checking the same class, event rules and record scope. A high km/l combustion result should not be placed on the same leaderboard as a battery-electric result without a clearly defined energy-equivalence method.

What engineering choices help a student team improve efficiency?

The available team account from CTU Green Gliders identifies five practical areas that can move an electric prototype’s result: mass, aerodynamics, battery management, the motor and telemetry. These are design levers, not guarantees; a team still has to pass inspection and produce a valid run.

  • Lower mass: reducing vehicle weight can cut the energy needed for acceleration and climbing.
  • Improve aerodynamics: a cleaner shape reduces air resistance, especially as speed rises.
  • Refine battery management: a self-developed system can control battery operation and provide more precise energy information.
  • Select an efficient motor: motor choice and control affect how much stored energy reaches the wheels.
  • Use telemetry: better data helps a team understand energy draw and make informed adjustments during development.

These factors interact. A lighter body may require structural compromises, aerodynamic panels can complicate access or inspection, and a custom battery-management system adds development work. The competition rewards the complete vehicle and its valid run, not one isolated component.

What should “winner” mean when a team also holds an older record?

“Winner” identifies the best valid result in that event’s class and year. “Record holder” identifies the standing benchmark recognized for a defined geography, class and energy source. Drop Team illustrates the difference: it won the 2026 Brazilian Prototype Internal Combustion class at 556 km/l, while its cited Brazilian record remains 716 km/l from 2023.

Milhagem UFMG BE’s case is both a win and a record because its 401 km/kWh result exceeded the prior Brazilian Prototype Battery-Electric mark of 381 km/kWh. Any report should retain the full label so readers know whether a number is a one-event victory, a national record or a world record.

Why does the result matter beyond the leaderboard?

Shell Eco-marathon gives university students a controlled setting in which vehicle efficiency is the primary design objective. The Brazil event’s participation from four Latin American countries and the European final’s roughly 1,500 students show the scale of the educational network. Teams work across mechanical design, electrical systems, software, data collection, safety and project management.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The numbers also illustrate how efficiency depends on a vehicle’s mission. A streamlined Prototype can pursue an extreme distance-per-energy figure, while an Urban Concept entry must address a more familiar city-car brief. The competition therefore offers two different lessons: how far engineering can push efficiency, and how efficiency changes when practicality becomes part of the design target.

Glauco Paiva, Shell Brasil’s director of Communication and Brand, described the event as “Esta é uma das partes mais gratificantes de fazer o que eu faço.” The statement reflects the competition’s educational and community dimension, but it does not alter the technical definition of the 401 km/kWh result: it remains a Brazilian Prototype Battery-Electric record from 2026.

What is the clearest way to report the 2026 result?

Use the complete description: “Milhagem UFMG BE set a new Brazilian Shell Eco-marathon Prototype Battery-Electric record of 401 km/kWh in 2026, surpassing the previous Brazilian mark of 381 km/kWh.” Add “not a world record” when the context could lead readers to assume that the figure is global. For the combustion result, write that Drop Team won the Brazilian Prototype Internal Combustion class at 556 km/l and separately note its 716 km/l national record from 2023.
