The 2025 Mercedes-Benz E450 gets the important parts of the E-Class formula right: it is quiet, exceptionally smooth, genuinely quick, comfortable over distance, and reassuring in poor weather. Its 375-hp turbocharged inline-six makes highway passing effortless without turning the car into a restless sports sedan.
The irony is that the E450’s biggest problems appear when you are not driving. Mercedes replaced too many simple, tactile controls with capacitive touch surfaces and screen-based menus. The result is a car whose powertrain feels almost perfectly resolved while routine tasks such as changing the volume or adjusting the climate can feel unnecessarily complicated.

The 2025 E450 is a superb cruiser with an overcomplicated dashboard
The E450 is best understood as a modern E-Class—not a junior S-Class and not an AMG sports sedan. Its appeal is the ability to cover ground quickly and quietly with very little effort. It has enough power to make a loaded highway merge or a two-lane pass feel easy, but it does not constantly demand the driver’s attention.

That character makes the E450 a compelling choice for buyers who value refinement, all-weather confidence, and long-distance comfort more than razor-sharp steering or theatrical acceleration. It also makes Mercedes-Benz’s interface decisions particularly frustrating. The car’s mechanical systems generally reduce workload; its controls sometimes add to it.

Powertrain: the six-cylinder is the reason to buy an E450
Under the hood is a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. Output is 375 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. A nine-speed automatic transmission sends power to standard 4MATIC all-wheel drive.
The mild-hybrid system does not turn the E450 into an electric vehicle or a full hybrid. Its role is to support the engine and accessories, smooth the automatic stop-start system, and help the powertrain respond with less hesitation. The result is a drivetrain that feels strong and polished rather than aggressive.
Independent testing recorded a 4.4-second 0-to-60-mph time for the sedan. The E450 All-Terrain wagon also reached 60 mph in 4.4 seconds in Car and Driver testing. Those are serious numbers, but the more important characteristic is how the car delivers them: progressively, quietly, and without the sensation that the engine is working hard.

It is not tuned to constantly advertise each shift. Instead, it usually finds an appropriate ratio without making the driver think about the transmission. That is exactly the right approach for this car. The E450 has performance in reserve, but it behaves like a luxury cruiser first.
Fuel economy and fuel requirements
The EPA estimates the 2025 E450 4MATIC Sedan at 22 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined. Actual economy will vary with driving conditions, speed, weather, traffic, wheel and tire configuration, and equipment.
The E450 requires premium unleaded fuel. That is a normal expectation in this segment, but it matters when comparing ownership costs with less powerful or non-luxury alternatives.
Ride and handling: comfort without becoming clumsy
The E450’s ride is one of its most convincing strengths. It is comfortable and composed, with enough body control to keep the car from feeling soft or careless through ordinary corners. The sedan has more agility than its quiet, formal presentation suggests, but it does not confuse agility with entertainment.
That distinction is important. Buyers looking for quick steering, abundant road feel, and a chassis that encourages aggressive driving may find a BMW 5 Series more appealing. The E450 instead prioritizes calm responses, a settled ride, and the ability to make a long trip feel shorter.

Rear-wheel steering is available and can make the large sedan easier to maneuver at low speeds. Optional air suspension can add another layer of ride-quality flexibility. Neither feature should be assumed on every E450, so shoppers need to verify the equipment list on the specific vehicle rather than relying on a trim name alone.
Standard 4MATIC all-wheel drive gives the sedan broad-weather usability. It should not, however, be confused with the more rugged-looking E450 All-Terrain wagon. All-wheel drive improves traction; it does not make the sedan an off-road vehicle.
E450 sedan versus E450 All-Terrain wagon
Mercedes sells the E450 formula in two substantially different body styles. The E450 Sedan is the cleaner choice for buyers who want a traditional luxury car, a lower seating position, and formal road manners. The E450 All-Terrain is a raised wagon with more cargo utility and a more adventure-oriented appearance.

It is heavier, and its price can rise quickly once options are added. Car and Driver tested a 2025 E450 All-Terrain with a $77,250 base price and a $90,695 as-tested price. That example shows how easily the wagon can approach or exceed the price of larger luxury SUVs.
Do not use the wagon’s cargo advantages, ground clearance, or test price as though they apply to the sedan. They are different body styles with different buyer priorities. A sedan owner who needs maximum cargo flexibility may be better served by the wagon or an SUV; a wagon buyer who values the most formal E-Class presentation should understand what is being exchanged for utility.
Cabin comfort and materials remain strong
The E-Class cabin is quiet, richly finished, and especially comfortable up front. The seats and ride support the car’s long-distance mission, while the fit and finish preserve much of the traditional E-Class sense of occasion.
This is where Mercedes gets the balance mostly right. The E450 feels expensive because it isolates occupants from noise and harshness, not merely because it places large displays across the dashboard. The cabin’s calm atmosphere is one of the reasons the car works so well as a daily luxury vehicle.
Available technology can include the MBUX Superscreen, a passenger-side display, navigation, ambient lighting, wireless smartphone charging, USB-C connectivity, and over-the-air software updates. Equipment varies by trim, package, market, and individual vehicle configuration. A review of one highly optioned E450 should not be read as a list of standard equipment for every example.

The controls are where Mercedes lost the plot
The E450’s most significant weakness is its reliance on capacitive-touch controls. Mercedes has preserved the mechanical smoothness of the E-Class while making some everyday interactions less intuitive than they were in earlier generations.
Changing the audio volume, adjusting the climate system, or using steering-wheel controls can require more visual attention and more precise finger placement than a conventional knob or physical button. Consumer Reports and Car and Driver have both criticized the usability of the touch-sensitive controls, including the distraction and labor involved in basic tasks such as volume adjustment.
This is not an argument against all technology in the E450. The central touchscreen, digital displays, and voice-control functions can be effective once the driver learns where everything is. Nor is the fair conclusion that the MBUX system is unusable. The problem is more specific: too many frequent actions are routed through flat touch surfaces, sliders, menus, or screens.

Is the MBUX Superscreen worth getting?
The optional MBUX Superscreen makes the interior feel modern and visually impressive. It also reinforces Mercedes-Benz’s decision to treat the dashboard as a software platform rather than simply as a set of driver controls.
Connected and entertainment functions can depend on the vehicle’s hardware, software generation, activation status, and applicable Digital Extras or subscription terms. Buyers should distinguish between the screen hardware installed in the car and the services that may require activation or ongoing terms. Do not assume that every E450 has the passenger display, every connected feature, or identical software capabilities.
The Superscreen may be attractive to buyers who enjoy a highly digital cabin. It is less compelling for anyone who prefers physical controls and visual simplicity. The extra screens do not fix the touch-control criticism; in some ways, they make the car’s screen-first philosophy more apparent.
Pricing and ownership costs
Reported starting prices for the 2025 E450 4MATIC Sedan fall roughly between $70,850 and $72,000, depending on the source, reporting date, destination charges, and presentation of MSRP. Those figures should not automatically be treated as contradictory trim prices. Check the current window sticker and Mercedes-Benz pricing for the exact vehicle, including destination and installed options.

Options are a major part of the value calculation. Air suspension, rear-wheel steering, advanced driver assistance, larger display equipment, upgraded cabin features, and appearance packages can substantially change the car’s price. The E450 makes more sense financially when a buyer will actually use its six-cylinder power, all-wheel drive, quiet cabin, and long-distance comfort.
It is harder to justify if the primary goals are a prestige badge, a large display, or maximum rear-seat and cargo space. A larger luxury SUV may provide more utility, while some competitors offer a simpler control layout. The E450 is not a bargain version of a larger Mercedes; it is a premium midsize sedan whose value depends on appreciating its refinement.
Warranty and routine considerations
In the United States, the 2025 E450 carries a four-year/50,000-mile basic warranty. That is competitive in duration with several luxury rivals, but warranty length does not eliminate routine ownership costs.

Recall status should be checked by VIN, not inferred solely from the 2025 model year. Mercedes-Benz USA maintains a recall lookup resource and also directs owners to the official National Highway Traffic Safety Administration system for vehicle-specific information.
Recall campaigns can vary according to production date, equipment, and the affected vehicle population. At least one 2025 Mercedes-Benz recall document concerns software or electronic-control-unit remedies for specified vehicles, but that does not establish that every 2025 E450 is affected.
Before purchasing a new or used example:
- Obtain the vehicle identification number.
- Run it through the Mercedes-Benz recall lookup and the NHTSA recall system.
- Ask the dealer to identify open campaigns and confirm whether the remedy has been completed.
- Verify the exact installed equipment, especially air suspension, rear-wheel steering, MBUX display configuration, and driver-assistance features.
- Confirm the vehicle’s warranty start date, mileage, service history, and included maintenance terms.
How the E450 compares with the BMW 5 Series and Audi A6
The E450 occupies the space between mainstream luxury midsize sedans and higher-performance models such as the AMG E53. Against the BMW 5 Series, the Mercedes is the more comfort-oriented and technology-forward choice. A buyer who values sharper steering response and a more driving-focused character may prefer the BMW.
Against the Audi A6, the E450 offers a newer-feeling cabin and stronger six-cylinder performance, while the Audi may appeal to shoppers who prefer simpler visual restraint. These are positioning judgments rather than directly comparable instrumented test results. Wheels, tires, powertrains, packages, and testing conditions can change the experience of any particular vehicle.
