The bulky, dinosaur-like vehicle photographed at Germany’s Nürburgring is Porsche’s forthcoming combustion-powered Macan replacement, not a movie prop and not the existing Macan Electric. Its strange silhouette comes from temporary camouflage, oversized wheel-arch pieces and foam blocks fitted to test clearance. Porsche is targeting a 2028 arrival, potentially as a 2029 model-year vehicle, and plans to sell the combustion SUV alongside the electric Macan.
What is Porsche’s new Macan prototype?
It is a development mule for the next gasoline-powered Macan family member. CarScoops and Autocar identify the vehicle as Porsche’s replacement for the internal-combustion Macan, which has now ended production. Nürburgring photographs show a heavily disguised SUV carrying test equipment that makes its body look far wider and taller than a finished Porsche.

The production exterior remains secret. Porsche declined to comment on the spy photographs, so details such as final dimensions, lighting, bumpers and trim cannot be confirmed from this vehicle.
Why does the new Macan look like a Jurassic Park vehicle?
The Jurassic Park comparison comes from temporary test hardware rather than Porsche’s intended styling. Autocar reports that the mule has widened wheel arches, a larger grille and foam blocks around the arches and underbody. Those pieces let engineers check ground clearance and component clearances in realistic driving conditions before the production body is finalized.

That equipment explains the creature-like outline: the foam is deliberately bulky, and the camouflage hides the surfaces beneath it. It should not be read as evidence that the showroom Macan will have dinosaur-style fenders or an unusually large grille.
What Porsche says about the design
Porsche design chief Tobias Suhlmann said the target is recognizably Porsche while accommodating the different hardware of an internal-combustion vehicle: “First of all, it should look like a Porsche. That is for me the overall target. We’ve talked about torpedo fenders; you should see them also in an SUV. There are technical needs that are different in an EV and ICE [internal-combustion-engined], so you always need to design it in comparison to the technical bits that sit underneath the shape.”
Is the next Porsche Macan gas or electric?
The prototype is combustion-powered. It is a separate program from the all-electric Macan, and Porsche intends to offer both vehicles in parallel rather than treating this SUV as a replacement for the EV.

Is Porsche using an Audi Q5 platform for the new Macan?
Reporting points to the Volkswagen Group’s PPC architecture, the combustion platform also used by the Audi Q5. That shared foundation does not make the vehicles identical: Porsche can use different suspension tuning, body structure, software, engines and interior design. Until Porsche publishes technical specifications, the extent of the common hardware is unknown.
Why the platform matters
A combustion platform gives Porsche space for engines, transmissions, exhaust after-treatment and fuel storage that an electric-only architecture does not need. It also explains why the prototype’s bodywork is being evaluated separately from the PPE-based Macan Electric.

Current reporting describes a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder and a 3.0-liter V6, with a plug-in-hybrid variant expected to join them. These are reported powertrain plans, not final Porsche specifications; output, battery size, electric-only range, transmission details and availability by market have not been announced.

When will the combustion Macan come out?
Porsche has confirmed a 2028 arrival for the combustion SUV. CarScoops notes that the final timing could make it a 2029 model-year vehicle, depending on launch scheduling. Porsche has not announced a public order date, price, trim walk or market-by-market rollout.
The long lead time is normal for a vehicle still undergoing disguise and clearance testing. The photographed mule is evidence that development is active, not that production cars are ready for delivery.
How is this program different from the Macan Electric?
The electric Macan is Porsche’s first model on the PPE architecture. Porsche’s official technical account lists a 100-kWh gross battery, 800-volt charging at up to 270 kW, more than 500 km of WLTP range for its variants, a 0.25 drag coefficient and more than 3.5 million prototype test kilometres. Those figures describe the electric program and must not be applied to the unreleased combustion SUV.
The two Macans therefore share a name and broad SUV mission while solving different packaging problems. The combustion vehicle must accommodate an engine, exhaust and fuel system; the EV is organized around a large battery and high-voltage charging. That distinction is why the final body shapes may differ even if Porsche carries over recognizable cues such as the brand’s torpedo-style fenders.

Why is Porsche bringing back a combustion Macan?
The move follows a changing sales mix. Autocar reported that internal-combustion Macan production ended in July. In its third-quarter 2026 comparison, the ICE model recorded 27,996 sales and the electric Macan 23,029; combined Macan sales totaled 51,025, down 21 percent from the third quarter of 2025.
Those figures do not prove that the combustion replacement will outsell the EV, but they show why Porsche is preserving a gasoline option while continuing its electric strategy. Offering both powertrains lets the company address markets and customers that are moving to battery vehicles at different speeds.
What is still unknown about the production SUV?
Important buying information remains unavailable. Porsche has not confirmed the final exterior, interior, engine outputs, plug-in-hybrid battery, fuel economy, electric range, dimensions, cargo volume, pricing or standard equipment. The camouflage also prevents a dependable judgment about the production car’s proportions.

- Do not use Macan Electric range or charging figures to estimate the gasoline model.
- Do not assume the reported engine list applies in every country.
- Wait for Porsche’s formal specifications before comparing performance, price or size with rival SUVs.

Will the foam blocks and oversized arches appear on customer cars?
Almost certainly not in their test form. They are temporary clearance and camouflage hardware used to validate the underlying package; the production body will use Porsche’s finalized surfaces and wheel-arch design.

Could the launch be delayed beyond 2028?
Yes. Porsche’s stated target is 2028, while the possible 2029 model-year designation reflects launch timing rather than a confirmed delay. The company has not published a fixed on-sale date.
Has Porsche announced pricing for the combustion Macan?
No production pricing has been released. Any dollar or euro figure circulating before Porsche’s trim and market announcements should be treated as speculation.
