The Pontiac Solstice is a stylish, rear-wheel-drive two-seat sports car that can be rewarding as a weekend roadster, but it is compromised as everyday transportation. Pontiac sold it for the 2006–2010 model years on General Motors’ Kappa platform. The naturally aspirated 2.4-liter car makes 177 horsepower; the 2007-and-later Solstice GXP uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter rated at 260 horsepower. A fixed-roof coupe joined the range for 2009 and is substantially rarer than the convertible. Before buying, check the vehicle identification number for open safety recalls, inspect the passenger-airbag warning system, operate the folding roof several times and verify tire fitment. The Solstice’s looks and nimble handling are genuine strengths, while limited storage, wind noise, a fussy roof and ordinary interior materials are the trade-offs.
What is the Pontiac Solstice?
The Solstice is a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car with two seats. It rides on General Motors’ Kappa architecture, a platform also used by the Saturn Sky, Opel GT and Daewoo G2X. That shared structure can help when searching for technical information, but a common platform does not guarantee that a part fits every body style, year or trim.

Many consumer histories emphasize 2006–2009 Pontiac-badged production because the Pontiac brand and plant changes compressed the final model year. For any purchase, use the VIN, build date and title record rather than relying only on a seller’s model-year description.
Every Solstice is a two-seat convertible except for the 2009-and-newer coupe. The roadster’s long hood, short deck and low seating position give it a classic sports-car profile, but the same proportions leave little room for luggage or small-item storage.

Which Pontiac Solstice model years are available?
Each year brought a slightly different equipment mix. The major changes are easier to see in a timeline than in a general trim description.
| Model year | What changed | What to verify on an individual car |
|---|---|---|
| 2006 | Launch year with the 2.4-liter base engine, five-speed manual transmission and a manufacturer MSRP of $19,915, according to Hagerty’s 2024 historical data. | Early-production service history, roof operation and completion of applicable campaigns. |
| 2007 | Solstice GXP arrives with a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine rated at 260 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed automatic was optional on configurations that offered it. | Confirm that the car is a genuine GXP and inspect turbocharger, cooling and driveline service records. |
| 2008 | Tire-pressure monitoring, OnStar, XM satellite radio and a driver information center expand the equipment list. StabiliTrak becomes standard on the base model; the GXP gains a Club Sport package. | Check that the equipment advertised by the seller is actually present and functioning. |
| 2009 | The Solstice coupe joins the range. J.D. Power’s model-year summary lists a standard limited-slip differential, anti-lock brakes and stability control on base cars. | Verify coupe body panels, hatch seals and the vehicle’s production documentation. |
| 2010 | Historical model listings identify 2010 as the final Solstice model year. | Use the VIN and build date to distinguish a late-built car from a car merely registered in 2010. |
How fast is the Solstice, and what is the difference between the base car and the GXP?
The base Solstice uses a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter four-cylinder rated at 177 horsepower and 173 pound-feet of torque. The GXP’s turbocharged 2.0-liter produces 260 horsepower and 260 pound-feet. General Motors’ 2007 release gives the GXP output as 260 horsepower (194 kW) and 260 lb.-ft. (353 Nm).
| Specification | Base Solstice | Solstice GXP |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | 2.4-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder | 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder |
| Power | 177 hp | 260 hp |
| Torque | 173 lb.-ft. | 260 lb.-ft. |
| Transmissions | Five-speed manual standard at launch | Five-speed manual; five-speed automatic available on applicable configurations |
| 0–60 mph | About 7 seconds, according to Hagerty’s historical description | About 5.5 seconds, according to Hagerty’s historical description |
| Character | Smooth, simpler performance with less urgency | Much stronger acceleration and a more performance-focused specification |
The GXP is more than an engine swap: it was positioned as the sportier model and received hardware and equipment intended for harder driving. Nevertheless, condition matters more than the badge. A neglected GXP can be a worse purchase than a carefully maintained base car, especially when turbocharger, cooling or clutch work is overdue.
Is the Pontiac Solstice a good car?
It is a good choice when the priority is affordable, distinctive open-air driving and you can accept sports-car practicality. It is a poor fit when you need quiet highway manners, generous cargo space, easy daily commuting or a simple one-motion convertible roof.
Reasons people like it
- Rear-wheel drive and a low seating position provide the basic layout enthusiasts expect from a small sports car.
- The styling is distinctive, and the car remains uncommon enough to attract attention without being an exotic.
- The chassis is described by Consumer Reports as fairly nimble.
- The GXP delivers a major performance increase over the naturally aspirated model.
- Two seats simplify the cabin and keep the car focused on the driver and one passenger.
Common compromises
- Consumer Reports criticizes the 2.4-liter engine’s harsh feel and the manual gearbox’s wide gearing.
- Wind noise is noticeable, particularly with the roof down or at sustained highway speeds.
- The manual roof requires an awkward, multi-step process rather than a quick powered cycle.
- Storage is nearly nonexistent; luggage planning is part of ownership.
- Interior fit and finish are less polished than the car’s exterior suggests.
Those characteristics make the Solstice more convincing as a second car, fair-weather commuter or weekend roadster than as a sole vehicle. A pre-purchase drive should include rough pavement, a highway-speed run, tight turns and repeated roof operation so you can judge noise, vibration and usability for yourself.

Are Pontiac Solstice coupes rare?
Yes. Hagerty reports 65,724 Solstices built in total and only 1,266 coupes. That production mix makes the fixed-roof car materially rarer than the roadster and explains why an original, documented coupe can command more collector interest.
Rarity does not automatically make a coupe a sound investment. Check for accident repairs, replacement glass, missing trim, water intrusion and incomplete records before paying a premium. The coupe’s scarcity is most meaningful when paired with originality, low corrosion, a properly operating drivetrain and verifiable history.
What recalls should you check before buying a Solstice?
Run the VIN through the current National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall lookup and ask for repair documentation. Recall completion is VIN-specific; a seller’s statement that “all recalls are done” is not enough.
Passenger-presence sensor recall 17V-061
NHTSA recall 17V-061 covers certain 2006–2010 Pontiac Solstices. General Motors reported 91,007 potentially involved vehicles and an estimated defect rate of 2% in its 2017 filing. The passenger-presence sensor mat can bend or develop an open circuit. When the fault is active, the system may suppress the front passenger airbag. General Motors warned that if an adult occupies the passenger seat, suppression could increase the risk of injury.
On the car, an illuminated airbag warning or a passenger-airbag status that does not behave normally is a reason to pause the purchase until a qualified repair facility diagnoses it. Do not treat the warning as a cosmetic dashboard issue.

Other campaign records
Campaign records also include rear-axle pinion-seal leakage on certain early cars, seatbelt-fastener concerns and ignition-switch campaigns. An ignition-switch fault can turn the engine off and affect airbag deployment. Confirm which campaigns apply to the exact VIN and whether the repair was completed, not merely announced.
How should you inspect a used Pontiac Solstice?
A systematic inspection is more valuable than choosing a year by reputation. Bring the VIN, a flashlight and the seller’s service records, and arrange an independent inspection when possible.
- Verify identity and history. Match the VIN on the dashboard, door label and title. Confirm model year, GXP or base status, coupe or roadster body and any accident or salvage history.
- Check recalls before driving. Look up the VIN with NHTSA and compare completed repairs with the airbag, seatbelt, axle-seal and ignition-switch campaigns.
- Operate the roof repeatedly. Follow the correct multi-step procedure, watching for binding, uneven movement, damaged seals or water stains. A roof that works once in a seller’s driveway may still leak or jam when warm, cold or partially latched.
- Inspect the cabin and warning lights. Start the car with all warning lamps visible, then confirm that the airbag, ABS, stability-control and tire-pressure systems complete their self-checks. Examine seat upholstery, switchgear and carpet for moisture.
- Assess the drivetrain. On a cold start, listen for unusual mechanical noise, verify steady idle and look for smoke or fluid leaks. During the drive, check clutch take-up, manual-shift engagement, automatic-transmission behavior and braking stability.
- Look underneath. Inspect the rear axle for pinion-seal leakage, check suspension and steering components for damage, and look for corrosion around fasteners, brake lines and structural mounting points.
- Match tires and wheels. Confirm that all four tires have appropriate load and speed ratings, even wear and usable age. Uneven wear can reveal alignment, suspension or accident issues.
- Price the deferred work. Obtain written estimates for roof seals, tires, brakes, clutch, turbo-related service or electrical faults before negotiating. A low purchase price can disappear quickly when several small defects are combined.
What tires fit a Pontiac Solstice?
Hagerty’s equipment table lists an 18R245 front tire size. In normal tire notation, shoppers will usually search for 245/45R18 performance tires. Treat that phrase as a starting point, not a complete fitment guarantee.
Before ordering, verify the exact model year, wheel specification, front and rear axle requirements, load index, speed rating and clearance. Confirm that the tire’s approved width matches the wheel and that the vehicle does not have a non-standard suspension or wheel package. A shared Kappa-platform part number is not proof that a tire, wheel or sensor fits every Solstice.

Ask for recent comparable sales in your region and subtract the cost of known repairs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which Pontiac Solstice should you buy?
Choose the base car if lower complexity, a lower entry price and relaxed weekend driving matter more than acceleration. Choose a GXP if turbocharged performance is central to the appeal and the car has evidence of careful maintenance. Consider a coupe when rarity and collector interest outweigh the roadster’s open-air character, but verify originality and body condition before paying extra.
- Best use case: a maintained second car for dry-weather drives.
- Highest priority checks: VIN-specific recalls, airbag warning status, roof seals and operation, axle leaks, tire condition and service records.
- Biggest ownership surprise: the amount of planning required for luggage and the roof’s multi-step operation.
- Most important comparison: condition and documented maintenance versus trim badge alone.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Pontiac Solstice have a limited-slip differential?
J.D. Power’s 2009 model-year summary lists a standard limited-slip differential on base cars, along with ABS and stability control. Verify equipment on the specific vehicle because aftermarket changes and replacement drivetrains can alter what is fitted today.
Can Saturn Sky or Opel GT parts be used on a Solstice?
The cars share the Kappa platform, which can make cross-model parts research useful. Fitment still depends on year, body style, trim, engine and supplier revision, so confirm the part number and VIN application before purchase.
Why do some listings call a car a 2009 when its paperwork says 2010?
Late production and registration timing can create a mismatch between the model year shown in a listing and the date the car was sold or titled. Use the VIN, build label and title record to establish the correct model year for insurance, parts and recall work.
