The Firefly is the first car from Firefly, NIO’s compact electric-car brand. It is positioned in the small-car territory occupied by the MINI Cooper, but that framing is a statement of intent—not the result of a direct comparison test. The headline comparison dates to New Atlas’s January 2025 coverage; the Firefly’s specifications and availability have since changed by date and market.
What is the Firefly?
Firefly is both the name of NIO’s compact electric-car brand and its first model. At a NIO event, CEO William Li described the ambition this way, in a quotation reported by New Atlas: “We are building the Firefly car to be smarter than Mini and be more Mini than smart cars.” That captures the intended positioning; it does not establish that the car outperforms a MINI Cooper.
The distinction matters because the Firefly and the MINI Cooper need to be compared as specific cars in a specific market and model year. The available company announcements do not provide a corresponding current MINI specification set or a direct head-to-head test.
What are the Firefly’s specifications?
Launch-era specifications announced in April 2025
Firefly’s April 23, 2025 launch release described a rear-wheel-drive hatch with a 105 kW motor, 200 Nm of torque, a 42.1 kWh LFP battery and a 330 km average WLTP combined range. It listed up to 470 km in the city cycle and average combined consumption of 14.5 kWh/100 km. These are standardized figures from the launch announcement, not a guarantee of real-world range; the company noted that results vary with conditions.

The release described the charging figures as configuration-dependent for AC and gave a peak figure for DC, not a charging-time guarantee for every charger or condition. It also said a future fifth-generation NIO battery-swap station was expected from 2026. That dated expectation does not confirm that swap access is available to a buyer in a particular country today.
What changed in the April 2026 announcement?
In April 2026, Firefly announced an upgraded model with 120 kW peak motor power and a 0–100 km/h time of 7.9 seconds in Sport mode. The announcement supplied selected China-market details, not a complete updated specification and equipment table for all regions. It should not be assumed that the 2025 range, charging, or other figures fully describe the upgraded car.

What did Firefly cost at launch, and what are the later China prices?
Prices below are dated company announcements for different markets and are not verified offers for October 2026. They should not be treated as directly comparable without accounting for market, tax, battery plan and date.

How does the Firefly compare with the electric MINI Cooper?
The available information supports a comparison of positioning, not a numerical verdict. There is no equivalent current MINI specification set here for price, dimensions, battery, range, charging, performance, cargo space, safety or warranty. To make a fair buyer comparison, match market and model year first, then check:
- Local transaction price and applicable taxes.
- Exterior dimensions, passenger and cargo practicality, and parking maneuverability.
- Usable battery capacity and range measured under the same standardized test cycle.
- Charging power and charging time, including the conditions behind each claim.
- Motor output and acceleration, using the same measurement convention.
- Safety rating and the test protocol behind it.
- Warranty, service coverage, order availability and delivery terms in the buyer’s country.
What has been announced about safety and availability?
Euro NCAP result
In September 2025, Firefly announced that the car had received a five-star Euro NCAP rating and reported a 96% adult-occupant protection score. Those figures are attributed to the company’s announcement of the result; they do not establish that the Firefly is the safest small car overall.

Sales and regional rollout
Firefly’s April 2025 launch release said sales began in China that month and described an intended international rollout. In November 2025, NIO reported that right-hand-drive production had begun for units headed to Singapore and described availability or planned activity in several European markets. These company updates do not confirm that orders, a particular trim, or service support are available in every country in October 2026. Buyers should confirm current local terms with the importer or retailer.
