The YANGWANG U9 Xtreme, or U9X, is the electric hypercar behind the headline. BYD says it reached 496.22 km/h (308.4 mph) at ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg in Germany on 14 September 2025, claiming the production-car top-speed record. That figure is a reported peak-speed run, not a two-way average established by the cited sources.
What car set the reported top-speed record?
BYD’s luxury YANGWANG brand identifies the U9 Xtreme as the production-guise version of its U9 electric hypercar. BYD announced the speed claim on 22 September 2025, saying the car reached 496.22 km/h at ATP Papenburg nine days earlier. BYD’s announcement is the primary source for the result, date, venue and production framing. Top Gear reported the equivalent rounded figure of 308.4 mph.
BYD says it will make no more than 30 U9 Xtreme customer units available. That limited-series claim helps explain why this is a production-car record claim rather than a speed achieved by a purely one-off prototype; it does not by itself settle every possible definition of “production car.”
How should the 496.22 km/h claim be interpreted?
The sources report a maximum speed achieved on a test track. They do not describe a two-way average protocol, so the result should not be presented as one. Nor do the cited sources establish broader regulatory certification or independently verify the run. The precise, supported wording is that BYD reported the U9X reached 496.22 km/h at ATP Papenburg on 14 September 2025 and claimed the production-car top-speed record.

Top Gear says the U9X dethroned the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+, reporting 304.8 mph for the Bugatti in 2019. BYD separately cites 490.484 km/h as the previous quickest petrol-powered model’s maximum speed. These are attributed comparisons, not evidence that all records used identical venues, production criteria or measurement protocols.
What makes the U9X different from the regular U9?
BYD describes the U9X as an evolution of the U9 sold in China, with hardware intended for extreme speed and track use. The figures below are manufacturer-stated specifications, not independent measurements.

In its later Nordschleife announcement, BYD also named a redesigned cooling system and a titanium-alloy carbon-ceramic braking system. The manufacturer’s own account describes how the car was configured; the sources do not supply independent component testing.
How does the Nürburgring result differ?
BYD reported a separate U9X lap time of 6:59.157 on the 20.832 km Nürburgring Nordschleife on 22 August 2025, in the Electric Super Sports Cars class. This is a circuit-lap result, not the Papenburg straight-line maximum speed. BYD’s Nordschleife announcement also identifies the GitiSport e·GTR² PRO semi-slick tires used for that effort.

What role did the tires play?
Giti says its GitiSport e·GTR² PRO semi-slick pattern was specially designed and developed with YANGWANG for the U9X. Giti’s account connects the tire collaboration to the record effort and quotes its export-market original-equipment general manager, Andy Ng, praising the milestone. This is a car-specific development story, not evidence that the tires are generally available or suitable for other vehicles.
