NHTSA Recall Lookup vs. Manufacturer Lookup: Which Should You Use?

Start with NHTSA’s VIN lookup for open safety recalls. If a campaign is new, coverage may be limited, or a notice conflicts with the result, confirm the VIN with the manufacturer or dealer.

For a specific U.S. vehicle, start with NHTSA’s VIN lookup to find unrepaired safety recalls. If a recall was just announced, a notice conflicts with the result, or your vehicle may fall outside NHTSA’s lookup coverage, verify the VIN with the manufacturer or its dealer. The two sources are connected: NHTSA’s lookup uses recall information supplied by manufacturers, and some information may appear on the manufacturer’s side before it is posted by NHTSA.

How the NHTSA and manufacturer lookups differ

NHTSA administers and monitors the federal vehicle safety recall program; manufacturers initiate recalls and carry out remedies. NHTSA describes its VIN tool as providing “recall information provided by the manufacturer conducting the recall,” and warns that some of that information may not yet be posted on its site. The databases are therefore not entirely independent.

Question NHTSA lookup Manufacturer lookup or contact
Is the result vehicle-specific? Yes, when you search by VIN or license plate. Year, make, and model searches are broader. Use the VIN for a vehicle-specific check; features vary by manufacturer.
What if a recall was just announced? Some affected VINs may not yet be identified or posted. Check the manufacturer’s lookup or contact its customer service or dealer with the VIN.
What if the vehicle may fall under an NHTSA lookup exception? Some recall types or older recalls may not appear in the result. Ask the manufacturer or dealer to confirm coverage for the VIN.
Where do you arrange the repair? Use the recall result and notice as a starting point; NHTSA directs owners to the manufacturer’s dealership. The manufacturer’s dealer can confirm case-specific details and arrange the remedy.

Manufacturer lookup features and update schedules differ; no single set of capabilities applies to every automaker. For a new notice or conflicting result, contacting the manufacturer or dealer with the VIN is the useful second check.

How to check whether your vehicle has an open safety recall

  1. Find the VIN. The 17-character vehicle identification number is commonly visible at the lower left of the windshield, on driver-side registration information, or on insurance documents.
  2. Search NHTSA’s Recalls page. Enter the VIN for a vehicle-specific result. NHTSA also supports license-plate searches. Searching by year, make, and model or by equipment gives broader results, not the same answer as a VIN search.
  3. Read any recall notice and follow its safety guidance. If the recall is unrepaired, contact the manufacturer’s dealership to arrange the remedy. Follow any interim safety instructions in the notice while you wait.
  4. Verify if the result is missing or conflicts with a notice. Check the manufacturer’s recall lookup, or contact its customer service or a dealer with the VIN. Check NHTSA again later if affected VINs are still being identified.

What a zero-result NHTSA search does—and does not—mean

A zero result means the lookup did not find an unrepaired safety recall for that VIN within the tool’s coverage. It is not a complete history of all recalls or manufacturer campaigns. NHTSA lists these limitations for VIN and license-plate searches:

  • A recall that has already been repaired does not appear as an open recall.
  • For some newly announced recalls, the manufacturer has not yet identified all affected VINs.
  • Recalls more than 15 years old generally are not included unless the manufacturer offers broader coverage.
  • Some recalls by small vehicle manufacturers, including some specialty applications, are not included.
  • Non-safety customer-service campaigns and recalls involving international vehicles are not covered by the lookup.

NHTSA says a vehicle recall never expires. That describes the recall campaign; it does not mean every older campaign will show in today’s VIN result. The 15-year lookup limit and other exceptions still apply.

What to do if the sources disagree

If you have a recall notice but NHTSA shows no open recall, use the VIN to ask the manufacturer or dealer whether the vehicle is included and whether the work is outstanding. A mismatch can occur when a campaign is recent or affected VIN identification is still underway. If the manufacturer confirms that your vehicle is affected, ask the dealer what remedy applies and whether you should follow interim safety guidance. Recheck NHTSA as identification information is updated.

Why checking matters

Recall activity is substantial: NHTSA reported 997 vehicle safety recalls affecting more than 29 million vehicles in the United States in 2025. That figure describes nationwide activity, not the likelihood that a particular vehicle has an open recall. NHTSA’s recall-data resources describe daily updates to its dataset, but a recently announced campaign can still take time to identify all affected VINs.
