How to Estimate the Total Cost of Owning an Electric SUV

A practical worksheet for comparing electric and gas SUV costs using your own mileage, local energy prices, quotes and resale assumptions.

Estimate an electric SUV’s ownership cost over a defined number of years and miles—not from its sticker price alone. Add what you will pay to buy, finance, charge, insure, maintain and register it, include any charging installation, then subtract its expected resale value. For a fair comparison, run the same calculation for a similarly sized, equipped gas SUV using your own quotes and local costs.

Use one formula and the same timeframe for both SUVs

Choose an ownership period, such as the number of years you expect to keep the vehicle, and estimate the miles you will drive during it. Apply those same assumptions to each SUV. A useful framework is:

Total ownership cost = net acquisition cost + financing + energy + maintenance + repairs + insurance + taxes and fees + charging setup, where applicable − expected resale value.

Use the transaction price, not just MSRP: include applicable taxes and fees, and subtract an incentive only if you qualify for it and it applies to your purchase. Include financing consistently. If one vehicle is financed, account for its loan cost; do not compare that with a cash purchase while ignoring the cost difference in your method. Estimate resale value for the end of the same ownership period.

SmartSign "Electric Vehicle Charging Station" Sign | 12" x 18" 3M Engineer Grade Reflective Aluminum
  • 3M AUTHORIZED. Official 3M reflective films and inks on durable, rustproof aluminum ensure that our signs meet all DOT requirements for outdoor parking and traffic signs.
  • REFLECTIVE. Signs have Engineer Grade reflectivity that makes sure they can be spotted at night.
  • DURABLE & LAMINATED. Heavy-duty rustproof aluminum has a 10-year outdoor durability rating backed by a 3M warranty. Graphics are protected from weather and abuse and graffiti can be cleaned off. Laminated signs outlast competitive unlaminated or overcoated signs.
  • INSTALLATION. All signs come with rounded, burr-free corners and pre-punched/pre-cleared holes. Signs mount to U-channel posts, square or round galvanized posts, wooden posts and chain link fences.
  • MADE IN USA. We have been making signs for over 100 years in the US. We know which signs work and which signs are durable outside.

The IEA ownership-cost tool defines residual value as the expected sale or scrappage value at the end of its modeled period, and includes purchase costs, taxes, charging setup and financing among its inputs.

Gather the inputs that determine your estimate

Purchase price, taxes and incentives

Use a current quote for the specific model year, trim and equipment you are considering. Include destination and dealer charges, purchase or sales taxes, registration and other transaction costs. Compare like with like: a higher trim or different model year can overwhelm a powertrain comparison.

For a U.S. purchase now, do not subtract a federal clean-vehicle credit for the SUV. The IRS says the new and previously owned clean-vehicle credits are unavailable for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. Its page says vehicles placed in service after that date can qualify only when acquired on or before September 30, 2025, with a binding written contract and payment by then. Check state, local, utility, employer or dealer incentives separately; rules and timing vary. IRS clean-vehicle credit guidance

Financing

Record your down payment, amount financed, APR, loan term, fees and total interest. Use a lender or dealer quote based on your own credit and terms rather than a generic monthly-payment estimate. If you are comparing cash purchases, use a consistent approach for both vehicles and do not add loan interest to only one.

Electricity and charging

Estimate total miles over the ownership period, then use the specific SUV’s energy consumption and your local electricity rates to estimate charging expense. Account for the likely mix of home and public charging; public charging prices depend on the network and tariff, so a single assumed rate can misstate your costs. Include time-of-use rates if they apply to your home plan.

For a gas SUV, use its fuel consumption and your local fuel price on the same mileage assumptions. The comparison that matters is your energy cost over your expected miles, not a generic cost-per-mile figure.

Home charger and installation

Include charger equipment and installation, plus any electrical work your property requires, if you plan to charge at home. Get a quote for the actual installation rather than treating every home setup as the same cost. The IEA tool lists home charging installation as an input.

The IRS page describes a separate credit for qualifying home refueling or recharging property placed in service before July 1, 2026. That prospective installation deadline has passed; do not count it as an available incentive for a new installation. If you are evaluating work completed before that date, confirm eligibility with current IRS guidance or a tax professional. IRS clean-vehicle credit guidance

Insurance, maintenance and repairs

Request insurance quotes for the exact vehicle and the driver or household that will insure it. Premiums are personal and location-dependent, so a blanket claim that EVs cost more or less to insure is not a reliable input for your estimate.

Use the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule and warranty for the particular SUV. Keep scheduled service separate from repairs, and do not treat reduced routine maintenance as proof that repairs will be free. A battery replacement is not a routine ownership expense to insert without vehicle-specific evidence.

Recurring taxes and fees

Add recurring registration costs, any applicable annual EV fee and other local taxes. These vary by jurisdiction; check your motor vehicle agency for current amounts rather than assuming a national figure.

Resale value

Estimate what the SUV could sell for at the end of your chosen period, using comparable age, mileage and trim where possible. Subtract that expected value from the total costs. Because future resale prices are uncertain and can materially affect the result, calculate a range rather than relying on one precise forecast.

Build the comparison in a worksheet

Use a row for each cost category and a column for each vehicle. Keep the period, mileage and assumptions visible so you can revise the estimate when you get a quote or change your driving plans.

Cost category Electric SUV Gas SUV
Net acquisition cost Transaction price plus applicable taxes and fees, less incentives for which you qualify Transaction price plus applicable taxes and fees, less incentives for which you qualify
Financing Your loan cost, if financed Your loan cost, if financed
Energy Expected miles, model-specific consumption, and your home/public charging rates Expected miles, model-specific fuel consumption, and local fuel price
Charging setup Equipment, installation and electrical work, if applicable Not applicable
Insurance Quote for the vehicle and insured household Quote for the vehicle and insured household
Maintenance and repairs Vehicle-specific scheduled service, warranty and repair assumptions Vehicle-specific scheduled service, warranty and repair assumptions
Taxes and fees Applicable purchase and recurring costs for your location Applicable purchase and recurring costs for your location
Resale value Expected value at the end of the chosen period Expected value at the end of the chosen period
Total ownership cost Add costs, then subtract expected resale value Add costs, then subtract expected resale value

Do not fill a cell with a generic figure just to complete the table. Get a vehicle-specific quote, verify a local fee, or mark the input as unknown and test how much it could affect your result.

Use calculators as a starting point, not a substitute for your quotes

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center calculator uses driving habits to estimate ownership cost and emissions. It supports comparisons of up to eight vehicles, custom vehicle entries and state selection for electricity prices. Treat it as a structured starting point, then inspect its assumptions and update them with current local or personal inputs when possible.

The IEA tool lets users select an SUV class and powertrain. Basic inputs include region, year, annual distance, vehicle type, powertrain, fuel price and whether home charging will be installed. Advanced inputs include vehicle cost, taxes, residual value, installation, maintenance and financing. These tools organize the variables; neither replaces your transaction, insurance or installation quotes.

Test which assumptions could change your answer

Calculate a low and high estimate for inputs that are uncertain, especially resale value, annual distance, electricity or fuel prices, insurance and charging installation. Change one assumption at a time so you can see what drives the difference between the SUVs. A small gap in the total may be less meaningful than uncertainty in a single large input.

  • Keep ownership years and total miles identical between vehicles.
  • Use the local charging and fueling costs you are likely to pay.
  • Match size, trim and equipment as closely as possible.
  • Use actual quotes for the purchase, financing, insurance and charger work.
  • Show the resale assumption and how the result changes across a reasonable range.

The DOE-hosted total-cost report contains modeled dollar results for a defined small-SUV scenario, including vehicle, financing, fuel, insurance, maintenance, repairs and taxes or fees. Those are scenario outputs, not a current individualized estimate; do not transfer them to a different SUV or buyer without matching the report’s assumptions.
