What is the Rivian R2?
The R2 is Rivian’s midsize electric SUV, designed with two rows and seating for five. It sits below the R1S in exterior size and passenger capacity. The R1S has three rows and seats up to seven, so the two models are not interchangeable for households that regularly need more than five seats.
Rivian’s March 13, 2026 announcement described R2 as nearly 2,000 pounds lighter than the R1 line. That is a broad comparison with the R1 lineup, not a precise weight comparison with every R1S configuration. Rivian’s announcement also gave an announcement-era range estimate of up to 345 miles; the current trim-specific page now lists different, EPA-labeled estimates for Premium and Performance.

Rivian’s current product page is the source for these dimensions and seating figures. They show that R2 has a smaller published exterior footprint; dimensions alone do not prove that it is easier to park, handles better, or offers more usable cabin space.

Which R2 trim should you compare?
Rivian’s current U.S. product page lists three R2 trims. Prices, specifications and availability below are manufacturer claims shown on that page as accessed October 4, 2026; they may change.

These are not guaranteed real-world driving ranges. The Standard figure is described as estimated on the product page, while Premium and Performance are specifically labeled EPA-estimated. Rivian’s March 2026 announcement gave a broader, earlier estimate of up to 345 miles; use the current trim-specific figures rather than combining the two sets of claims.

How do price and range compare with the R1S?
Rivian’s current R2 page gives the trim-specific starting prices and range figures above, but the official material cited here does not provide a complete current R1S trim-by-trim price and range matrix matched by model year and configuration. A precise R2-versus-R1S price or range verdict would therefore risk comparing unlike versions. For a fair shopping comparison, check the live Rivian pages for the exact R1S and R2 configurations you are considering.
What about towing?
Rivian lists R2 towing capacity at 3,500 pounds for Standard and up to 4,400 pounds for Premium and Performance when equipped with the Tow Package. The higher figure is not universal across all R2 versions: confirm the trim and equipment. Rivian says R1 towing capacity also depends on configuration and hitch setup, so a meaningful R1S comparison requires a specific model year, drivetrain and hitch configuration.

Which SUV fits your needs?
- Consider R2 if five seats are sufficient and you prefer the smaller vehicle Rivian lists. Compare its three trims by price, drivetrain, published range and availability.
- Consider R1S if you need a third row or seating for up to seven. R2’s lower starting price and smaller dimensions do not make up for the missing seats when passenger capacity is essential.
- Compare exact configurations if towing, range or total price is decisive. Equipment and configuration affect towing, and a same-year, same-configuration R1S comparison is needed for meaningful price and range figures.
Availability and reservations
Rivian’s current page lists Performance as available now, Premium for late 2026 and Standard for 2027. These are the page’s stated availability timings, not a guarantee of delivery to a particular buyer. Rivian also says R2 can be reserved with a refundable $100 deposit and that reservations are currently limited to the United States and Canada; confirm the live terms and trim availability before reserving.
