The Volkswagen ID.7 (0.23) and the European-market Hyundai IONIQ Electric (0.24) complete the list of production cars we can stand behind. We could not tie enough official, comparable figures to individual models to rank fifteen cars, so this is a six-car ranking with the method and the gaps spelled out.
How drag coefficient works
Cd is a dimensionless number that describes how easily a body moves through air. Mercedes-Benz’s technical explanation, published September 19, 2025, puts it simply: frontal area multiplied by Cd gives a vehicle’s air resistance, and that resistance rises with the square of speed. A car with a low Cd is therefore well shaped, but total drag also depends on how much area the car presents to the air.
Two consequences matter for any comparison. First, a low Cd does not by itself mean low drag, because a tall or wide vehicle can have a good Cd and still push a large volume of air aside. Second, a Cd value only means something when the setup behind it is known, because wheels, tires, mirrors and underbody panels all change the number.
What to check before comparing two figures
- Whether the Cd is a manufacturer’s own figure or a value reproduced in a secondary compilation.
- The model year, market, trim, wheel and tire setup, and mirror type behind the number.
- The frontal area, so that Cd can be multiplied by it to estimate drag area.
- Whether the vehicle is a production car, a near-production prototype or a concept.
Verified drag coefficients, ranked by Cd
The order below uses Cd alone, because it is the only figure published for most models. Frontal area and the resulting drag area (Cd × frontal area) are shown only where both numbers are on record.

The EQS and Lucid Air sit at the same 0.20 figure at the precision published, but the Lucid number comes from a secondary compilation, so the order between them is provisional. The same caution applies to the Tesla Model S.
Mercedes-Benz EQS
The EQS figure dates from its 2021 launch material, and Mercedes itself notes that archived press material can be outdated. Treat 0.20 as the lowest value Mercedes quoted for the car, not as a current record across every wheel, tire and mirror option. The 2.51 m² frontal area and the 0.5 m² effective air resistance figure are the best-matched pair in this table.

Lucid Air and Tesla Model S
Both values (0.200 and 0.208) come from reported figures in a 2022 appendix published by the California Air Resources Board, which compiles data rather than measuring it for these models. They are useful as cross-checks, but they are not manufacturer specifications, and neither source in this table gives a frontal area for either car.
Hyundai IONIQ 6
Hyundai’s 2022 announcement gives Cd 0.21 and credits active front air flaps, wheel-gap reducers and optional slim digital mirrors among its aerodynamic features. The announcement does not state the wheel and mirror configuration behind the figure, so compare it only with other numbers that report the same setup.

Volkswagen ID.7
Volkswagen’s 2023 newsroom material gives Cd 0.23 and a frontal area of 2.46 m². The company attributes about half of the Cd value to body shape, with wheels and tires, the underfloor and functional openings also contributing. Designer Daniel Scharfschwerdt, quoted in Volkswagen Newsroom’s ID.7 aerodynamics article, said: “When designing the ID.7, there was a greater focus on aerodynamics than for practically any other model.”
Hyundai IONIQ Electric
Hyundai Motor Europe lists Cd 0.24 for the IONIQ Electric on its model page, but the page does not give a publication date. This figure belongs to the European-market IONIQ Electric, a different model generation from the newer IONIQ 6, and should not be read as a figure for that car.

What the numbers mean in practice
At equal frontal area and speed, a Cd of 0.20 produces about 17% less aerodynamic drag force than a Cd of 0.24, because 0.20 divided by 0.24 is 0.83. The drag areas of the two cars where both numbers are on record show how frontal area changes that picture: the EQS works out to about 0.50 m² and the ID.7 to about 0.57 m², so the ID.7 has roughly 12% more drag area despite a Cd only 0.03 higher than the EQS’s. Real-world range also depends on speed, tires, weather and powertrain, so these figures explain part of efficiency, not the whole result.
Excluded: Volkswagen Mission Efficiency
Volkswagen Group’s 2026 announcement gives the Mission Efficiency concept a Cd of 0.158 and a frontal area of 2.08 m², which would place it first. It is a near-production vehicle rather than a production car, so it is excluded from the ranking. Its drag area, calculated from those two figures, is about 0.33 m².

Why the list stops at six
A model enters this ranking only when its drag coefficient is tied to a named manufacturer or regulator source, with a model year, market, trim and wheel or mirror configuration that can be stated. Many production electric cars are not yet covered by that kind of source in the material available for this article, so they are omitted rather than given a confident position. Any future addition needs the same attribution.
