Mitsubishi is not bringing a confirmed Lancer Evolution SUV to showrooms. The company’s latest statements describe the Evo name as a treasured possibility rather than an approved production program. The real “built by another company” story is Mitsubishi’s next-generation ASX, which uses Renault Captur assets and the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance’s CMF-B platform. Alongside that Renault-derived SUV, Mitsubishi is exploring plug-in-hybrid concepts and all-wheel-drive technology that echo the engineering themes behind the rally-bred Evo.
Is Mitsubishi bringing back the Lancer Evolution?
Not as a confirmed production vehicle. At Mitsubishi’s 2026 shareholder discussion, president and COO Keisuke Kishiura called the Lancer Evolution, Diamante and Galant “treasures,” but said the company had “no concrete plans” to launch them at that time. He described building a company capable of returning those nameplates as a future goal, not a product announcement.

Senior engineering fellow Kaoru Sawase has expressed a similar ambition, saying an Evo revival is his personal dream. Sawase also said any future car would need electrification, potentially using a hybrid or fully electric system. Those comments establish interest in an electrified performance model, but they do not confirm an Evo-badged SUV, a launch date, or production specifications.
Which Mitsubishi SUV is based on a Renault?
The clearest match is the next-generation Mitsubishi ASX. In its February 2023 Alliance announcement, Mitsubishi said Renault Group and Mitsubishi Motors would use Renault Captur and Clio assets to develop the next ASX and Colt on the CMF-B platform. That makes the ASX Renault-derived and Alliance-developed, but it does not make it an Evo replacement.

What the shared platform means
Platform sharing lets Alliance partners use common vehicle architecture, components and engineering work while applying their own exterior design, equipment and calibration. The arrangement can reduce development time and cost, yet it also means the ASX’s basic architecture is not an exclusive Mitsubishi performance platform. The evidence supports calling it Renault-based or Alliance-developed; saying Renault built an Evo successor would go beyond the announced program.
Does the ASX have anything to do with the Evo?
Only indirectly. The ASX supplies the third-party-built SUV connection in the headline, while Evo heritage comes from a different set of attributes: rally-derived all-wheel-drive control, strong torque management and motorsport engineering. Mitsubishi has not said that the ASX will receive Evo hardware, an Evo powertrain or an Evo badge.
| Vehicle or program | Architecture or status | Powertrain and drive information | What it proves |
|---|---|---|---|
| Next-generation ASX | Renault Captur and Clio assets; CMF-B platform | Announced Alliance vehicle program; detailed Evo performance specifications have not been announced | Mitsubishi is using partner-developed SUV architecture |
| Elevance concept | Mitsubishi concept vehicle | Plug-in-hybrid direction | Mitsubishi is exploring an electrified SUV future, not confirming production |
| Outlander PHEV | Mitsubishi production SUV | 2.4-litre naturally aspirated engine, 221 kW total system output and all-wheel drive, as reported in 2026 coverage | A current technical reference for Mitsubishi’s electrified AWD capability |
| Lancer Evolution revival | No concrete production plan announced | Electrification discussed as a requirement; final system is unknown | Executive aspiration rather than a saleable vehicle |
What does the Elevance concept tell us about an Evo SUV?
Elevance is useful as a direction-of-travel signal, not as a launch confirmation. A 2025 report described the Mitsubishi concept as a plug-in-hybrid SUV and connected it with discussion of a possible electrified Evo. Concepts allow a manufacturer to test design and technology themes without committing to tooling, pricing or production timing.
That distinction matters because a concept can demonstrate packaging, battery placement or software ideas that later appear in other vehicles, while the displayed name and body shape never reach dealerships. Elevance therefore supports the phrase “Evo-inspired engineering direction,” but not “Mitsubishi has unveiled an Evo SUV.”

How does the Outlander PHEV connect to Evo technology?
The Outlander PHEV is the concrete bridge between Mitsubishi’s current range and its electrified performance discussion. The cited 2026 reporting lists a 2.4-litre non-turbo engine, 221 kW of combined system output and all-wheel drive. Its plug-in-hybrid layout demonstrates that Mitsubishi already has a production path for combining electric torque with all-weather traction.
That does not mean an Evo would use the Outlander’s exact hardware. A performance model would require different cooling, suspension, braking, software calibration and body control. The defensible connection is technological: electric motors and sophisticated AWD control could preserve the rapid torque response and traction management that made the Evo distinctive while meeting modern emissions requirements.
What is Ralliart doing now?
Ralliart’s current competition activity is centered on a modified Mitsubishi Triton in the Asia Cross Country Rally. Mitsubishi has not competed in the World Rally Championship since 2005. Historically, the company’s rally program delivered four consecutive drivers’ championships for Tommi Mäkinen and one manufacturers’ title, giving the Evo name much of its credibility.
The present Ralliart program keeps Mitsubishi visible in motorsport, but it is not a factory WRC return and does not announce an Evo road car. It is better understood as a way to develop and market rugged all-wheel-drive and durability themes while Mitsubishi’s passenger-vehicle strategy emphasizes SUVs and plug-in hybrids.

What would a genuine Evo revival need to show?
Before treating any future announcement as an Evo successor, check five separate facts:
- Production approval: an official model announcement, not an executive dream or design concept.
- Distinct performance hardware: documented motors, engine, suspension, brakes and torque-control systems rather than a shared SUV body alone.
- All-wheel-drive strategy: clear information about how the system manages front-to-rear or side-to-side torque.
- Electrification details: battery capacity, motor layout and whether the vehicle is hybrid, plug-in hybrid or fully electric.
- Sales timing: a named market, production site and customer delivery schedule.
Until Mitsubishi supplies those details, the story remains one of heritage informing future engineering rather than a confirmed new model.

Alliance vehicles often combine several kinds of contribution. Renault can provide an existing platform and donor vehicle, Mitsubishi can define styling and equipment, and the Alliance can coordinate manufacturing or technology sharing. “Built by another company” therefore describes the ASX’s development relationship, not proof that a separate automaker is secretly producing a Lancer Evolution under Mitsubishi’s badge.
The most accurate summary is straightforward: Mitsubishi is preserving Evo themes through AWD expertise, plug-in-hybrid development and Ralliart activity, while its confirmed partner-based SUV is the ASX. A production Evo SUV remains a possibility Mitsubishi executives would like to realize, not a vehicle buyers can order.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does CMF-B mean for an ASX buyer?
CMF-B is the Alliance vehicle architecture named for the ASX program. It indicates shared underlying engineering with other small vehicles in the partnership; trim, styling, software and market equipment can still differ by brand and region.
Can I buy the Elevance concept?
No production sale has been announced for Elevance. It is a concept used to show a plug-in-hybrid SUV direction, so availability, pricing and final specifications do not exist as retail facts.

Ralliart is Mitsubishi’s motorsport and performance identity, while ordinary production vehicles are developed through Mitsubishi Motors’ broader engineering organization. A Ralliart competition entry does not automatically create a matching road model.
Would an electric Evo still be an Evo?
That is ultimately a product-definition question, but Mitsubishi’s own engineering comments leave hybrid and fully electric propulsion open. The defining test would be whether the car delivers the Evo’s responsive all-wheel-drive performance, not whether it retains a gasoline engine.
