Mazda is preparing a broad reset of its four Large Architecture SUVs—the CX-60, CX-70, CX-80 and CX-90—after sales fell short of the company’s target. Mazda president Masahiro Moro said the work will cover the exterior, interior and powertrain and will be carried out on an unprecedented scale. Mazda has not yet released model-by-model specifications or a confirmed showroom date, so claims about a new transmission, suspension tune, touchscreen or engine family remain unconfirmed.
What exactly is Mazda changing on the CX-60, CX-70, CX-80 and CX-90?
The announced program covers all four SUVs rather than a single facelift. Exterior design, cabin design and powertrain systems are each included, with Mazda aiming to make the vehicles recognizable as flagship products.

He added that Mazda would cultivate the vehicles into products people would call its flagship and that the work would take time.
That wording confirms the scope, not the final hardware. Mazda has not published a specification sheet for any revised model, and it has not said whether the changes represent a conventional refresh, a deeper engineering revision or different treatments for each market.

Why are Mazda’s large SUVs missing their sales targets?
The immediate reason is a sizable volume gap. WhichCar reported Mazda’s four Large Architecture SUVs sold 150,637 units globally in 2025 against a 200,000-unit target, a shortfall of about 49,363 vehicles.

Australia shows how uneven the performance has been. Reported 2025 targets totaled 16,320 vehicles, while actual sales totaled 10,355.

The weakness continued into the first half of 2026, when reported year-over-year declines were 7.0% for the CX-60, 30.4% for the CX-70, 30.1% for the CX-80 and 12.7% for the CX-90. Those figures explain why Mazda is treating the lineup as a portfolio problem instead of trying to repair only one nameplate.
What technology do the four SUVs use today?
All four ride on Mazda’s Large Architecture, a rear-biased all-wheel-drive platform. The lineup uses inline-six petrol and diesel engines, 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance and, for selected versions, plug-in-hybrid power.
- Rear-biased all-wheel drive: the platform’s layout is intended to support a longitudinal, rear-drive-oriented vehicle balance while retaining all-wheel-drive traction.
- Inline-six engines: both petrol and diesel six-cylinder options are part of the existing architecture.
- Electrification: 48-volt mild-hybrid systems provide electrical assistance, while selected plug-in hybrids add a larger battery and charging capability.
Because the announced reset explicitly includes the powertrain, calibration, emissions equipment, hybrid controls or other hardware could change. Mazda has not confirmed any specific replacement engine, transmission or battery system.

Is Mazda redesigning the CX-60, CX-70, CX-80 and CX-90?
Yes, Mazda has confirmed substantial updates, but it has not called them a new generation or supplied a production redesign schedule. “Unprecedented” describes the scale of the planned work; it does not establish whether every model will receive new body panels, a new cabin architecture or a new powertrain family.
For buyers, the safe distinction is between confirmed scope and speculation. Exterior, interior and powertrain work are confirmed. A larger display, revised suspension, different automatic transmission, new engine or altered seating layout is possible but not announced.
When will the updated CX-90 and the other SUVs arrive?
Mazda has not announced a confirmed showroom launch date for the updated CX-60, CX-70, CX-80 or CX-90 in the cited statements. It has also not provided a market-by-market rollout sequence, so an update announced for one region should not be assumed to apply simultaneously elsewhere.

Are Mazda’s inline-six and plug-in-hybrid SUVs being replaced?

Predictions about a new transmission, revised hybrid system or different engine should therefore be labeled possibilities. The only confirmed position is that Mazda intends to revise the powertrain portion of the Large Architecture program.
How does the SUV reset fit Mazda’s wider recovery plan?
Mazda is pairing product changes with regional sales and customer-experience work. Its FY March 2026 presentation says North America is prioritizing the CX-50, the current and all-new CX-5, and the large-platform models while advancing sales-network reform and customer-experience initiatives.

Will existing owners receive the planned upgrades?
Mazda has described the work as upgrades to future products and has not said that vehicles already sold will receive hardware changes. Owners should wait for a model-specific service notice rather than assume a showroom update can be retrofitted.
Does a 48-volt mild hybrid drive like a plug-in hybrid?
No. A 48-volt mild-hybrid system assists the combustion engine and normally is not charged from an external cable. A plug-in-hybrid version uses a larger battery that can be charged and supports a greater amount of electric driving, although Mazda has not published revised-system specifications.
Will the flagship positioning create a new trim level?
