Neither is maintenance-free today. On cars this old, service records and present condition matter more than the badge. An LS 400 still needs documented timing-belt and water-pump work; a W140 needs a year-, engine-, and equipment-specific inspection, with especially careful attention to its electrical, climate-control, vacuum, and suspension systems.
No authoritative source establishes a current, comparable annual repair-cost total or a controlled head-to-head reliability rate for these models. The sensible way to choose is to compare two actual cars, obtain an independent inspection, and price their deferred work locally.

At a glance: which car suits which buyer?
| Question | Lexus LS 400 | Mercedes-Benz S-Class W140 |
|---|---|---|
| Reliability reputation | The 1UZ-FE V8 is widely regarded in buyer-guide material as durable when maintained. | Strong engineering and durability are possible, but age, equipment, and engine choice create more inspection variables. |
| Most important history item | Proof of regular servicing, including timing-belt and water-pump replacement. | Complete records showing electrical, climate, vacuum, suspension, and engine-specific work. |
| Comfort character | Very quiet and refined; ride character changes with suspension revisions and condition. | Exceptional isolation, spacious seating, and potentially extensive comfort equipment. |
| Typical complexity risk | Age-related rubber, electronics, cooling components, and overdue belt service. | More systems to fail: wiring, evaporator, regulators, vacuum controls, mounts, power steering, and equipment-dependent suspension. |
| Engine-cost warning | Confirm the exact service schedule and parts fitment for the car’s year, trim, and driveline. | The V12 carries a substantially higher service-cost warning than six- and eight-cylinder versions in the Mercedes-Benz Club of America guide. |
| Best buying approach | Find the best-documented, least-deferred example rather than the cheapest listing. | Buy only after a marque-aware inspection confirms that expensive equipment works or is financially manageable. |
That table is a decision framework, not a promise about every individual vehicle. A neglected LS 400 can be a poor purchase, and a carefully maintained W140 can be exceptionally dependable. Condition, records, and local repair support determine the result.
Why these two cars are still compared
The LS 400 and W140 represent two different interpretations of a large luxury sedan. Lexus concentrated on smooth, quiet operation and a relatively logical mechanical package. Mercedes-Benz pursued extraordinary isolation and a broad range of comfort and convenience systems. Both are now several decades old, so the original engineering is only part of the ownership equation: seals harden, wiring insulation ages, climate systems lose components, and previous owners may defer work that was affordable when the cars were newer.

Lexus LS 400 reliability and maintenance
The 1UZ-FE reputation is a starting point, not a guarantee
The Lexus buyer-guide material describes the 1UZ-FE V8 as having a strong durability reputation and advises buyers to look for regular maintenance. That supports confidence in the engine’s basic design, but it does not establish a failure rate or predict the remaining life of a particular car. A quiet idle and clean-looking engine bay cannot substitute for invoices and an inspection.
Ask for service dates and mileage, not merely a seller’s statement that the car was “always maintained.” Look for evidence of fluid changes, cooling-system work, belts, hoses, brakes, suspension components, and electrical repairs. If records stop for long periods, treat the car as an unknown-condition project even if it drives well.

Timing belt and water pump: verify the actual interval and date
Timing-belt and water-pump service belongs in every LS 400 discussion. Confirm when both were replaced on the exact car, what parts were used, and whether the work was documented by a reputable shop. If the date or mileage cannot be established, price the service as immediate preventive maintenance rather than assuming the belt is safe because the engine sounds smooth.
When shopping for a replacement kit, use the official Lexus parts catalog’s year selection and confirm the vehicle’s year, trim, engine, and driveline before ordering. A kit name alone does not prove fitment, and no particular listing, stock status, or current price should be assumed without checking the supplier.
Age-related LS 400 checks
- Inspect the cooling system for leaks, brittle hoses, radiator condition, and evidence of overheating.
- Check for oil or power-steering leaks and determine whether they are active or old residue.
- Evaluate suspension bushings, dampers, ball joints, and wheel bearings; a soft, quiet ride can hide worn components.
- Test every electrical function, including climate controls, gauges, windows, locks, seats, mirrors, and lighting.
- Check transmission behavior both cold and fully warm. Delayed engagement, slipping, or harsh shifts need a professional diagnosis.
- Look underneath for corrosion, accident repairs, fluid seepage, and damaged underbody covers.
PistonHeads describes a well-maintained LS 400 as notably strong in noise, vibration, and harshness suppression. It also notes that suspension revisions changed the ride character across versions. Treat that as a buyer-guide impression rather than a standardized test result: compare the actual cars on the same roads and assess whether worn suspension or tires are distorting the ride.

Mercedes-Benz W140 reliability and inspection risks
Year and equipment change the answer
The W140 is not one uniform specification. Engine, model year, market, and optional equipment alter both failure points and repair access. The Mercedes-Benz Club of America guide emphasizes that records are key and that pre-OBD-II cars can be harder to diagnose. A specialist inspection should therefore identify the exact engine and equipment before estimating risk.
Electrical wiring on 1993–1995 cars
The club guide calls out biodegradable wiring harnesses on 1993–1995 cars. Ask whether the harness has been inspected or replaced, obtain documentation if the work was done, and look for brittle insulation or intermittent electrical symptoms. Do not apply the warning automatically to every W140: verify the production year, market specification, and repair history.
Air-conditioning evaporator on pre-1996 cars
Pre-1996 cars are specifically flagged for possible air-conditioning evaporator leaks. Test the climate system long enough to confirm that it produces the requested temperatures and fan speeds, and ask whether refrigerant loss or evaporator work has occurred. A system that cools during a short test drive is not proof that a leak is absent.
Windows, vacuum systems, mounts, and steering
The inspection list also includes rear window regulators, vacuum-system components, motor mounts, and power-steering leaks. Operate each window repeatedly, test central locking and other vacuum-operated functions, and watch for slow movement, unusual noises, or functions that work only intermittently. Inspect mounts for excessive vibration and the steering system for wetness, low fluid, or pump noise.
Air suspension and ABC: equipment-dependent high-severity risks
A specialist W140 guide warns that neglected examples can cost more to restore than their purchase price and identifies air-suspension and ABC repairs as high-severity issues on cars equipped with those systems. Do not assume every W140 has either system. First establish the actual configuration, then inspect for warning messages, incorrect ride height, compressor or hydraulic noise, leaks, and a car that sags after sitting.
Because these systems can turn a seemingly minor fault into a major bill, include them in the pre-purchase inspection and obtain a written estimate from a shop familiar with the specific setup.

V12 ownership is a separate financial decision
The club guide explicitly warns that the W140 V12 has substantially higher service costs than six- and eight-cylinder versions and flags heavy fuel consumption. That warning should not be generalized to every W140. If considering a V12, require a specialist inspection, verify cooling and ignition-system history, and keep a larger reserve for labor and parts. A low purchase price does not make a V12 inexpensive to own.
Comfort, refinement, and daily usability
What the W140 can offer
The W140 club guide describes possible equipment including double-pane vacuum-insulated glass, spacious front and rear seating, power seats with memory, optional orthopedic seating, heated seats, dual-zone climate control, optional quad-zone climate control, and residual-heat operation. These features explain the model’s reputation for an unusually insulated, restful cabin.
They also create more components to test. Specification varies by year and market, so never assume that a particular car has quad-zone climate, orthopedic seats, heated seats, or any other option merely because the model line could be ordered with it. Check the vehicle itself and confirm that every switch, motor, valve, and display works.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteHow the LS 400 feels
The LS 400’s appeal is a calm, low-effort driving experience. Its sound insulation and drivetrain smoothness are major reasons owners praise it, while suspension revisions mean that two cars can ride differently even when both are mechanically sound. Worn dampers, bushings, misaligned wheels, or incorrect tires can make an otherwise refined sedan feel loose or harsh.
For a fair comparison, drive both cars back-to-back over broken pavement, smooth highway, tight turns, and stop-and-go traffic. Listen for trim rattles, driveline vibration, wind noise, and suspension knocks. Check rear-seat comfort separately if passengers will regularly use the car; the W140’s rear accommodation is one of its defining strengths.
Ownership costs: what can and cannot be concluded
The available buyer guides identify cost drivers, but they do not provide a current, comparable annual repair-cost total for an LS 400 and a W140. They also do not establish an authoritative statistical reliability ranking. It would be misleading to publish a universal annual figure or claim that every LS 400 costs less than every W140.

Build a budget from the car in front of you
Use an inspection report and local written quotes instead of an internet average. Separate the estimate into three buckets:
- Immediate safety work: tires, brakes, steering, suspension, lights, leaks, and any issue that makes the car unsafe.
- Reliability baseline: timing-belt and water-pump service where due, fluids, filters, belts, hoses, cooling components, and overdue scheduled maintenance.
- Comfort and cosmetic work: climate-control faults, seat motors, window regulators, trim, audio, and other items that can wait if they do not affect safety.
Add inspection fees, registration, insurance, taxes, storage, fuel, and a reserve for age-related surprises. A seller who cannot document major work should not receive credit for maintenance that might have happened; price the unknowns as risk.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare two actual examples
Step 1: establish identity and specification
- Record the VIN, model year, engine, transmission, market, trim, mileage, and equipment.
- For the W140, identify whether the car has air suspension, ABC, optional climate zones, orthopedic seats, or other complexity-adding equipment.
- For the LS 400, confirm the exact year, trim, and driveline before ordering parts or applying a service schedule.
Step 2: audit the paperwork
- Look for dated invoices rather than undated checklists.
- Match mileage on invoices to the odometer and inspect for unexplained gaps.
- Verify timing-belt and water-pump work on the LS 400.
- For the W140, look for wiring-harness, evaporator, regulator, vacuum, mount, steering, and suspension records where applicable.
Step 3: inspect cold and hot
Ask to see either car before it is warmed up. A cold start reveals battery weakness, belt noise, smoke, rough running, and delayed pressure build-up. Then repeat the checks at operating temperature, when cooling, transmission, climate, and idle problems may appear.
Step 4: operate every system
Use every window, lock, seat adjustment, memory setting, mirror, heater, air-conditioning mode, fan speed, gauge, warning light, and lighting function. On the W140, test vacuum-operated features and any equipped suspension system. On the LS 400, pay particular attention to climate controls, power accessories, and warning lights.
Step 5: road-test for faults, not just impressions
Drive over varied surfaces and include gentle and firm braking, full-lock turns, highway cruising, and stop-and-go traffic. Note steering pull, vibration, transmission behavior, suspension knocks, wind noise, temperature stability, and whether the cabin systems continue working after sustained use.

Parts support and long-term ownership
Parts availability is not identical to parts affordability or immediate stock. Classics World reports a Toyota GB statement: “Toyota/Lexus commits to having parts available for a minimum of 10 years from when the last vehicle is built.” That is a historical corporate commitment as quoted by the guide; it does not verify that any particular LS 400 part is currently available.
For either model, call local suppliers and specialists with the exact part number or VIN before buying the car. Ask whether the shop can source discontinued components, rebuild modules, or recommend an approved substitute. A vehicle that needs one unavailable electronic or climate component can be more disruptive than one needing several routine service items.
Which one should you buy?
Choose the LS 400 when your priority is lower mechanical complexity
The LS 400 is the logical choice when you value a strong durability reputation, a comparatively straightforward maintenance story, and broad access to shops familiar with Toyota/Lexus mechanical systems. Buy only with proof of belt and water-pump service or enough budget to perform it immediately. Its reputation reduces uncertainty; it does not remove the need for inspection.

Choose the W140 when comfort and isolation justify specialist support
The W140 makes sense when its exceptional quietness, rear-seat space, and available comfort equipment are central to your use. Accept that equipment and engine choice matter. A documented, well-maintained six- or eight-cylinder car with functioning systems can be a rewarding luxury sedan; an undocumented example with multiple electrical or suspension faults can consume more than its purchase price.
Treat a W140 V12 as a specialist project
Buy a V12 only with a specialist inspection, clear records, and a reserve appropriate to its higher service-cost warning and fuel consumption. Do not use six- or eight-cylinder ownership assumptions to budget for it.
Walk away from either car when the evidence is poor
Missing records, warning lights, overheating, nonfunctional climate control, unexplained suspension sag, extensive corrosion, or a seller who refuses an independent inspection are reasons to stop. There will always be another old luxury sedan; there may not be another affordable repair budget.
Final buying checklist
- Have the car inspected independently before purchase.
- Confirm model year, engine, trim, driveline, and equipment.
- Require documented maintenance, not verbal assurances.
- Verify LS 400 timing-belt and water-pump history.
- On 1993–1995 W140s, investigate wiring-harness condition.
- On pre-1996 W140s, investigate evaporator history and test the climate system thoroughly.
- Test W140 window regulators, vacuum systems, motor mounts, and power steering.
- Check whether air suspension or ABC is fitted before applying those risk warnings.
- Separate V12 budgeting from six- and eight-cylinder budgeting.
- Obtain local parts and labor quotes for every urgent and probable repair.
- Keep a reserve for age-related failures after purchase.
The best buy is not the model with the most impressive reputation. It is the documented example whose known and probable repairs fit your budget, whose systems you can test, and whose specialist support is available where you live.
