There is no universal winner between a 2026 Jeep Wrangler and a 2026 Ford Bronco in Moab. The trim, body style, tire and axle package, gearing, driver skill, and the exact route determine whether either vehicle is appropriate. A Wrangler Rubicon with the right equipment and a Bronco Badlands or Sasquatch-equipped model can be serious trail vehicles, but a base Bronco, a long-wheelbase model, or a rental vehicle restricted to pavement may be the wrong choice for the same obstacle.
For a demanding example such as Hell’s Revenge, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) describes a 6.5-mile slickrock route with steep climbs and narrow ledges, normally taking two to three hours. It says only very experienced drivers with advanced off-highway vehicles should attempt it. That warning matters more than the badge on the grille.

Start with the route, not the vehicle name
Moab is not one trail. It is a network of designated motorized routes ranging from graded roads to exposed slickrock and remote backcountry roads. A vehicle that is comfortable on one route may be unnecessarily large, under-equipped, or contractually prohibited on another.
Hell’s Revenge is a high-consequence example
BLM characterizes Hell’s Revenge as challenging and iconic, with steep climbs, narrow ledges, and slickrock obstacles. The agency’s guidance is explicit: only very experienced drivers with advanced off-highway vehicles should attempt the route. The published distance is about 6.5 miles, with two to three hours needed to navigate it, not including time spent stopping, airing tires, recovering another vehicle, or waiting at obstacles.

Those figures do not establish that a Wrangler is faster or safer than a Bronco. They establish the level of preparation and judgment the route demands. A capable vehicle cannot compensate for choosing a line outside your ability, driving a wet section, or ignoring a closure.
Maze roads have a different minimum standard
National Park Service (NPS) guidance for Canyonlands’ Maze district says all backcountry roads require a high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicle with low range. NPS advises carrying extra fuel and water, a shovel, a high-lift jack, and chains for all four tires, particularly from October through April. Roads can become impassable, and self-rescue may be the only practical option.
This is a Maze-specific standard, not a rule that every road around Moab requires chains or a high-lift jack. Treat it as a reminder to match equipment to the route, season, remoteness, and recovery consequences.
What the 2026 published specifications actually show
Ford and Jeep publish capability numbers under different configurations and measurement conditions. The figures below are manufacturer specifications, not an independent same-route test. Use them to eliminate unsuitable configurations, not to create a single score.
| Vehicle and configuration | Published ground clearance | Published approach or crawl information | What the number does—and does not—tell you |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 Ford Bronco, base two-door | 8.3 inches (Ford 2026 technical specifications) | Approach, breakover, departure and crawl figures are not stated in Ford’s 2026 technical specifications | Shows why a base Bronco should not be treated as equivalent to a packaged off-road model |
| 2026 Ford Bronco, Sasquatch two-door | 11.6 inches (Ford 2026 technical specifications) | Other geometry and gearing figures are not stated in Ford’s 2026 technical specifications; equipment varies by body style | A substantial clearance increase over the base two-door, but still configuration-dependent |
| 2026 Ford Bronco, Sasquatch four-door | 11.5 inches (Ford 2026 technical specifications) | Other geometry and gearing figures are not stated in Ford’s 2026 technical specifications | Nearly the same stated clearance as the two-door Sasquatch, with a longer body and wheelbase |
| 2026 Ford Bronco Raptor | Up to 13.1 inches (Ford 2026 technical specifications) | Other geometry and gearing figures are not stated in Ford’s 2026 technical specifications | Ford’s highest listed clearance; size, cost, and route fit still matter |
| 2026 Jeep Wrangler four-door with available 35-inch tires | Jeep’s 2026 Wrangler capability page does not state a clearance figure | Approach angle up to 47.4 degrees (Jeep 2026 Wrangler capability page) | The 47.4-degree value requires the available 35-inch-tire configuration; it is not a four-door baseline |
| 2026 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon with manual transmission and available 4.88:1 axle ratio | Jeep’s 2026 Wrangler capability page does not state a clearance figure | Available 100:1 crawl ratio (Jeep 2026 Wrangler capability page) | The ratio is conditional on the specified transmission and axle equipment |
Ford’s published Bronco clearance spans 8.3 inches on a base two-door to 13.1 inches on a Raptor. Jeep’s headline Wrangler angle and crawl-ratio claims likewise depend on selected equipment. Comparing the Bronco Raptor with a base Wrangler, or a base Bronco with a Rubicon on 35-inch tires, would produce a misleading result.

Wrangler Rubicon: where its published advantages matter
Approach angle and tire fit
Jeep advertises an approach angle of up to 47.4 degrees for four-door Wranglers fitted with available 35-inch tires. A steeper approach angle can reduce the chance of the front bumper contacting a ledge during a climb. The qualification is essential: the figure applies to that tire-equipped configuration, not every four-door Wrangler or every Rubicon.
Larger tires can also improve clearance under the axles and help a vehicle roll over sharp edges. They add weight and can change steering, braking, gearing, spare-tire load, and sidewall-repair requirements. Tire size alone does not make a route safe.

Jeep lists an available 100:1 crawl ratio for a Rubicon when it has the specified manual transmission and available 4.88:1 axle ratio. A very low crawl ratio lets the vehicle move slowly with less clutch work and more control when descending or placing a tire on a ledge. It is not a universal Rubicon specification: the transmission and axle ratio must match the published conditions.
Body style and maneuverability
A two-door Wrangler generally presents a shorter wheelbase than a four-door, which can help crest a breakover or turn around a tight obstacle. The trade-off is less cargo and passenger capacity for recovery gear, water, fuel, tools, and spare parts. A four-door offers more room but can contact the crest of an obstacle sooner if the line and breakover angle are unfavorable. The exact wheelbase and geometry for the selected model year and equipment should be checked on the build sheet rather than inferred from the Wrangler name.
Bronco Badlands, Sasquatch and Raptor: how to read the range
Badlands versus a base Bronco
“Bronco” covers a wide capability spread. Ford’s 8.3-inch figure for a base two-door is not a proxy for a Badlands or a Sasquatch-equipped Bronco. A buyer considering Moab should verify the actual build’s tires, clearance, axles, low-range system, underbody protection, and locking equipment. If a listing or rental advertisement does not identify those items, assume the specification is unknown until confirmed.

Sasquatch clearance
Ford’s 2026 technical data list 11.6 inches of clearance for the two-door Sasquatch and 11.5 inches for the four-door Sasquatch. The one-tenth-inch difference is less important than the fact that the body styles have different lengths and turning envelopes. Clearance can keep a differential or underbody component from contacting an obstacle, while wheelbase and line choice determine whether the vehicle can crest it without high-centering.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Raptor is not automatically the best Moab choice
The Bronco Raptor’s published maximum of 13.1 inches gives it the largest stated clearance in this comparison. That does not make it the correct tool for every Moab route. A wider, longer, more expensive vehicle can be harder to place between ledges, more exposed to body damage, or unnecessary on a route whose main challenge is tight turns rather than clearance. Consider the route’s width and consequences, not just the largest number in a specification sheet.
Capability categories that decide an obstacle
Ground clearance and breakover
Ground clearance is measured at a particular point and does not describe every vulnerable component. Differential housings, control arms, skid plates, exhaust parts, and the center of the chassis can sit at different heights. Breakover angle combines clearance and wheelbase: a shorter vehicle can crest a ridge that causes a longer one to high-center, even when the longer vehicle has a higher published clearance.
Approach and departure
Approach angle governs the front end as you begin a climb; departure angle governs the rear as you leave one. A vehicle can have adequate approach angle but drag a rear bumper, hitch, or spare tire on the way down. Use the published figure for the exact bumper, tire, and suspension configuration, and inspect the lowest physical point before attempting a ledge.
Axle lockers and traction
No like-for-like 2026 locker specification is published for every Bronco and Wrangler trim, so confirm whether the particular vehicle has front and rear lockers, a limited-slip differential, or neither. Do not infer equipment from a trim name alone.

Low range and crawl control
Low range multiplies torque and reduces speed for technical climbs and descents. Jeep’s 100:1 claim applies only to the specified Rubicon manual-transmission and 4.88:1 axle combination. No directly comparable Bronco crawl-ratio figure is established here. Ford and Jeep may use different gearing, tire sizes, and electronic aids; compare the build sheets rather than assuming equal performance from a label such as “4×4.”
Articulation and electronic aids
Suspension travel helps keep tires in contact with uneven rock, while traction-control and hill-descent systems can reduce wheelspin or braking demand. Their behavior depends on mode selection, tire pressure, wheel placement, and driver input. No controlled articulation or electronic-aid test between the models is published, so treat those features as aids, not guarantees.
Which configuration fits common Moab decisions?
| Your situation | Configuration to investigate | Why | What to verify before departure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Experienced driver targeting a technical, narrow route | Two-door Wrangler Rubicon or two-door Bronco with the required off-road package | Shorter body can make breakover and tight turns easier | Exact tire size, lockers, low range, underbody protection, recovery points, and route width |
| Technical route plus passengers and substantial gear | Four-door Wrangler Rubicon on the specified 35-inch-tire setup, or four-door Bronco Badlands/Sasquatch configuration | More cargo and passenger capacity, at the cost of a longer wheelbase | Published geometry for the chosen body style and clearance around the loaded vehicle |
| Maximum stated Bronco clearance | Bronco Raptor | Ford lists up to 13.1 inches of ground clearance | Trail width, vehicle width, damage exposure, rental or ownership cost, and whether the route needs that clearance |
| Backcountry travel in the Maze | Any exact configuration that meets NPS high-clearance, four-wheel-drive and low-range requirement | The route standard is equipment- and condition-based, not brand-based | Fuel range, water, shovel, high-lift jack, four tire chains, spare parts, map, weather and current road conditions |
| First serious off-road trip | Neither vehicle should be treated as a substitute for training or a guide | BLM’s Hell’s Revenge warning sets an experience threshold independent of vehicle capability | Choose a route within your skills, consider a guided trip, and learn recovery procedures first |
Preparing either vehicle for Moab
Confirm the route designation and conditions
- Use the current BLM designated motorized-route information for the Moab area and the current NPS map for any Canyonlands district travel.
- Check closures, seasonal restrictions, weather, flash-flood risk, and surface conditions immediately before leaving. A route that was passable yesterday can become impassable after rain or snow.
- Download or carry an offline map. NPS notes limited to no cellular service in remote Canyonlands districts, so do not plan to rely on a phone connection for navigation or emergency calls.
- Read the route description for width, ledges, water crossings, recovery access, and turnaround options. A route’s mileage does not indicate how difficult its obstacles are.
Carry recovery and self-rescue equipment
For Maze travel, NPS specifically recommends extra fuel, extra water, a shovel, a high-lift jack, and chains for all four tires, with particular emphasis on October through April. BLM also advises a tool kit, spare parts, and a first-aid kit for off-highway travel. Select equipment that is rated for the vehicle and learn how to use it before the trip; carrying a jack or recovery strap without safe attachment points or training adds little protection.
- Recovery points and equipment rated for the loaded vehicle
- Full-size spare tire, plug or patch supplies, and tools compatible with the vehicle
- Extra water and fuel sized for route length, detours, idling, and a delayed recovery
- Shovel, high-lift jack where appropriate, tire-pressure gauge, compressor, and tire repair tools
- First-aid kit, eye protection, gloves, lighting, and a way to communicate without cellular coverage
- Printed route map or an offline navigation device, plus a trip plan left with someone outside the group
Drive for the surface
BLM advises staying on established designated trails, driving within your ability and the vehicle’s capability, avoiding wet areas and waterways, and never cutting switchbacks. Airing down may improve traction and ride quality on suitable terrain, but use pressures appropriate to the tire, wheel, load, and speed, and reinflate before highway travel. Reduce speed before an obstacle, use a spotter where visibility is limited, and stop if the selected line requires a commitment you cannot reverse safely.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan you take a rental Bronco or Wrangler off road?
Not necessarily. NPS warns that most rental agreements restrict vehicles to paved roads and that the rental company can charge for damage when the vehicle is used outside contract terms. Four-wheel drive or a trail-oriented trim does not override a contract restriction.

- Ask the rental company whether the exact vehicle identification number and trim are permitted on the exact route you intend to drive.
- Request the permission and exclusions in writing. “Off-road” may be defined differently from “four-wheel-drive road,” “unmaintained road,” or a named BLM route.
- Confirm damage, recovery, tire, glass, towing, and underbody exclusions, including whether a third party may recover the vehicle.
- Verify that the vehicle actually has the advertised tires, low-range system, recovery points, spare, and clearance. Substitutions are common in rental fleets.
- If permission is unavailable, use a local company that explicitly rents vehicles suitable for four-wheel-drive roads or choose a guided trip.
Do not rely on a verbal assurance at the counter. A signed contract and written route permission are the practical boundary of what the rental company will support.
A configuration-first buying and trip checklist
- Model year: Confirm that the specification is for the 2026 vehicle, not an earlier or later generation.
- Body style: Record two-door or four-door; wheelbase changes breakover behavior and maneuverability.
- Trim and package: Identify Wrangler Rubicon, Bronco Badlands, Sasquatch, Raptor, or another exact configuration.
- Tires: Record size, construction, load rating, age, tread condition, and whether the spare matches.
- Clearance and angles: Use the published values for that body, bumper, tire, and suspension combination.
- Traction hardware: Verify axle lockers, axle ratios, transmission, low range, and selectable drive modes.
- Protection: Inspect skid plates, rock rails, bumpers, recovery points, and the lowest components.
- Load: Recheck tire pressure, payload, fuel, water, and suspension clearance with passengers and gear aboard.
- Route: Confirm designation, closure status, weather, seasonal restrictions, distance, and a turnaround plan.
- Skills: Make sure every driver knows spotting, controlled descents, tire repair, recovery boundaries, and when to turn around.
How to choose between the two for Moab
Choose the Wrangler when the specific Rubicon equipment, available 35-inch tires, manual-and-4.88 gearing combination, or shorter body best matches your route and driving style. Jeep’s published 47.4-degree approach-angle and 100:1 crawl-ratio figures can be meaningful advantages when—and only when—the vehicle has the equipment that produces them.
Choose the Bronco when a Badlands or Sasquatch build supplies the clearance, traction hardware, body style, and driver aids you need, or when the Raptor’s 13.1-inch published clearance solves a genuine obstacle problem. Do not pay for or attempt to maneuver a larger configuration merely because its maximum number is higher.
Recommended Free Tools
For Hell’s Revenge, the decisive questions are whether you are an experienced driver, whether the exact vehicle is an advanced off-highway configuration, whether conditions are dry and open, and whether you have a safe recovery plan. For Maze roads, start with NPS’s high-clearance, four-wheel-drive, low-range requirement and its self-rescue equipment list. In both cases, official route designations and current conditions outrank a brochure comparison.
