The USATimes247.com article names the Mazda CX-5 as the most reliable compact SUV of the last decade, saying it narrowly edged the Ford Escape. That is the article’s conclusion—not a verified industry-wide ranking: the available article excerpt does not show its year range, comparison method, scores, or the size of the gap.
What is the most reliable compact SUV?
According to the October 2, 2026, USATimes247.com article, the Mazda CX-5 takes the title, narrowly ahead of the Ford Escape. The excerpt also says the article considers four other competitors, but does not identify them. Without the full comparison or its underlying data, the ranking cannot be independently checked or treated as a definitive verdict across every compact SUV and model year.

Reliability is also not a single measure. Owner surveys describe reported problems across a population of vehicles; recall records track safety actions; and an individual vehicle’s service history and condition matter to a used-car buyer. Those measures answer different questions and should not be collapsed into a score that the available evidence does not provide.
Is a Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Consumer Reports’ model-year assessments provide useful context, but do not validate a decade-long comparison. Its indexed pages characterize the 2023 CX-5 as much more reliable than other cars from the same model year, while its 2018 CX-5 page rates that model year about average against other 2018 cars. The difference is a reminder to assess the particular year rather than assume every CX-5 has the same reliability record.

Consumer Reports says its reliability histories draw on its latest subscriber survey of about 380,000 vehicles and cover 20 potential trouble spots for model years 2000 through 2025. That figure describes the survey behind the histories generally; it is not the number of CX-5 owners surveyed, nor a direct comparison with the Escape.
The 2018 CX-5 page reports three NHTSA recalls for that model year. Recall counts are a reason to check the current record for the vehicle you are considering, not a complete measure of reliability or proof that a specific car is unsafe. Records and survey assessments can change.

Which used CX-5 years should I consider?
The available evidence does not establish a single best used CX-5 year. It distinguishes two model years—2023, rated much more reliable than same-year cars by Consumer Reports, and 2018, rated about average—without providing a like-for-like comparison of all CX-5 years or accounting for the condition of any individual vehicle.
Use those ratings as context, then compare vehicles of the same model year and inspect the specific car. Ask for maintenance records, review its condition and have a qualified independent mechanic inspect it before purchase. A favorable model-year reputation cannot guarantee that an individual used SUV has been maintained well.

What should I check before buying a used compact SUV?
- Check government records. Search the vehicle’s year, make, and model in NHTSA’s recall lookup. The site includes recalls, investigations, complaints, and manufacturer communications. For a specific vehicle, check its identification number where the site allows it, and confirm with the manufacturer or dealer whether any open recall work has been completed.
- Review the history and maintenance. Ask for service documentation and look for evidence that scheduled maintenance and any needed repairs were completed. A history report may add context, but it cannot establish the vehicle’s present mechanical condition.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Have a qualified mechanic examine the vehicle before you commit. A diagnostic scan can reveal some stored trouble information, but neither a scan nor a clean recall lookup proves long-term reliability or replaces a hands-on inspection.
NHTSA explains that similar reports about a product can signal a possible safety-related defect that may warrant investigation. Complaints and investigations are useful context, but they are not themselves a reliability ranking or a diagnosis of the car in front of you.

The headline’s answer is the Mazda CX-5, with the Ford Escape described as a close runner-up. The available comparison does not establish the precise decade, model-year scope, scoring method, data source, full competitor list, or numerical margin. Consumer Reports’ model-year findings and NHTSA’s vehicle records can help with a more specific decision, but neither confirms that decade-wide ranking.
