If “winner” means the latest full-year U.S. model ranking, Genesis’ leader is an SUV: the GV70 sold 33,876 units in 2025. The non-SUV answer is the G80 sedan, which Genesis identifies as its best-selling model cumulatively worldwide since its 2016 introduction, with 390,738 units sold including Electrified G80 versions. Those are different geographies, time periods and measures—not conflicting results.
What Genesis actually sold in the U.S. in 2025
Hyundai Motor’s January 21, 2026 full-year release reports 82,331 Genesis Motor America vehicles sold in 2025, a 10% increase from 2024. The GV70 led the brand’s model lineup, while the larger GV80 ranked second.

The official figures make the current U.S. conclusion straightforward: the GV70—not a sedan—was Genesis Motor America’s 2025 sales leader. Its volume was about 10,000 units higher than the GV80’s, and the two SUVs together accounted for the overwhelming majority of the model-level totals disclosed in the release.

Genesis’ historical global-sales announcement, “Genesis Drives Past One Million Global Vehicle Sales,” says the G80 has been the company’s best-selling model since it was introduced in 2016. The announcement puts cumulative G80 sales at 390,738 worldwide, including Electrified G80 models.

That is a cumulative global milestone, not a 2025 U.S. ranking. It includes years of sales across multiple markets and the electric derivative, whereas the Hyundai release measures one calendar year in the United States. Calling the G80 Genesis’ “winner” is accurate only when that historical global definition is stated.

The table is a secondary dataset and its GV70 figure does not match Hyundai’s official 33,876 release figure. For the primary 2025 Genesis Motor America claim, Hyundai’s corporate result is the appropriate reference; the secondary table is useful only to show the scale difference between the SUV and sedan nameplates it records. Genesis has previously described the GV70 as North America’s most popular Genesis model and reported cumulative deliveries since its 2021 launch in a late-2024 announcement about the redesigned GV70 and Electrified GV70. The compact-SUV format places it in the fastest-growing luxury-vehicle category for many buyers, while the lineup offers both gasoline and electric versions. Those product characteristics help explain its position, but the sales ranking itself comes from the reported units above.

What changed in the first half of 2026
Genesis’ next official update, published July 23, 2026, reports 39,088 Genesis vehicles sold in the United States during the first half of 2026—the brand’s strongest first half there. Hyundai identifies the GV70 and GV80 as the drivers of that result, but the retrieved announcement does not provide separate first-half counts for either model. It therefore supports continued SUV momentum, not a new model-by-model ranking.
How to state the answer accurately
- For the latest annual U.S. result: say the GV70 SUV was Genesis’ 2025 sales leader, with 33,876 units.
- For the long-term global result: say Genesis has identified the G80 sedan as its cumulative best seller since 2016, at 390,738 units including Electrified G80 models.
- Do not merge the measures: annual U.S. deliveries and cumulative worldwide sales answer different questions.
- For 2026 momentum: cite the record 39,088 first-half U.S. sales and note that Hyundai credits the GV70 and GV80 without publishing model-level totals in that update.
Bottom line for shoppers and industry watchers
The headline premise needs a qualification. Genesis does have a non-SUV sales success story—the G80’s long-running global cumulative leadership—but the brand’s current U.S. sales winner is unmistakably the GV70 SUV. Genesis’ recent growth is being led by its SUVs, while the G80 remains the important sedan when the question is historical worldwide performance.
