A used Hyundai Ioniq 5 can make sense when its recall work is documented, the 12-volt and high-voltage systems check out, the service history is credible, and the price reflects the car’s remaining warranty and condition. The most important issue to investigate is the Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU), which charges the 12-volt battery and supplies low-voltage equipment. Do not judge a particular car by model year alone: campaign coverage, repairs and warranty eligibility depend on its VIN and history.
Why the ICCU is the first used-buy check
The ICCU combines charging and power-conversion functions. Hyundai’s Recall 272 notice explains that it charges the auxiliary 12-volt battery and powers low-voltage vehicle equipment. Under certain electrical-load conditions, the ICCU’s MOSFET can fail and open an ICCU fuse. The 12-volt battery then may not recharge while the vehicle is being driven.

As the auxiliary battery discharges, the car can enter a fail-safe condition and progressively reduce motive power. If the 12-volt battery becomes fully depleted, the vehicle can lose motive power. Hyundai’s November 21, 2024 dealer notification states: “If the vehicle is driven until the 12-volt battery state-of-charge is fully depleted the vehicle will lose all motive power, potentially increasing the risk of a crash.” That warning is why recall status and repair evidence belong at the top of your inspection list.
Recall 272 covers certain 2022–2024 model-year Ioniq 5 vehicles produced from October 4, 2021, through October 9, 2024. “Certain” is critical: those dates do not prove that any individual VIN is included, and inclusion does not prove that the remedy remains open. Hyundai’s March 2024 Recall 257 bulletin also concerns certain 2022–2024 Ioniq 5 vehicles and describes low auxiliary-battery charging associated with an ICCU fault. Treat both campaigns as reasons to obtain a VIN-level dealer record, not as evidence that every car has failed or that one campaign automatically proves the other was completed.

How to verify recall and campaign status
1. Run the VIN through official databases
- Get the 17-character VIN from the windshield, driver-door label and seller paperwork. Make sure all three agree.
- Use Hyundai’s U.S. recall lookup and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall search for that exact VIN.
- Save or print the result, including whether a campaign is open, completed or not applicable. Recall records can change, so run the check again immediately before purchase.
A model year, build date or seller statement cannot substitute for a VIN result. If the online record is unclear, call a Hyundai IONIQ-certified dealer and ask the service department to confirm every open campaign and the completion date of prior repairs.
2. Ask for repair orders, not verbal assurances
Request invoices showing the VIN, repair date, mileage, campaign number, diagnostic findings and parts installed. A dealer record that says “recall completed” is useful; an invoice identifying an ICCU software update, ICCU replacement and/or fuse replacement is stronger. Check that the work was performed by an IONIQ-certified dealer, as Hyundai’s cited procedures specify dealer handling.
3. Understand the code-dependent Recall 272 remedy

- Code stored: the procedure calls for ICCU and fuse replacement, followed by a check that the replacement unit has current software.
Do not assume that a software-only repair means the dealer skipped a required part. The remedy depends on what the diagnostic check found. Conversely, do not assume an ICCU replacement proves that every related campaign is closed; ask the dealer to verify the complete VIN campaign history.
Inspect the 12-volt system before buying
What to check
- Ask how old the 12-volt battery is and whether it has ever been replaced.
- Look for invoices describing a jump-start, repeated low-voltage warnings, battery replacement, ICCU work or fuse replacement.
- With the car cold, check that it starts normally, displays no charging-system warning and does not show a power-reduction message.
- Have an independent technician test the battery, connections and charging behavior as part of a pre-purchase inspection.
A consumer battery tester can provide a limited indication of battery condition, but it cannot diagnose an ICCU fault, retrieve the campaign’s diagnostic history or prove that Recall 272 was completed. A healthy reading today is not a substitute for campaign documentation.
Warning signs that deserve an explanation
Ask the seller to explain any history of a charging-system warning, reduced-power or fail-safe message, sudden loss of available power, repeated jump-starts or long dealer stays. Request the corresponding repair order. A warning that disappeared after a 12-volt battery change may still warrant an ICCU and recall-status review, because the auxiliary battery is part of the system affected by the campaign.

Use a complete pre-purchase inspection
Exterior, structure and title
- Obtain a vehicle-history report and compare it with the title, registration and seller’s account.
- Look for salvage, rebuilt, flood, fire, odometer or unresolved insurance-history entries.
- Inspect panel alignment, paint texture, glass markings, underbody damage and evidence of structural repair.
- Check the charge port door, seals and surrounding bodywork for damage or water intrusion.
Accident or flood history can affect high-voltage components, insulation and electronics even when the car appears clean. Have a qualified technician inspect any questionable repair before you negotiate.
Cabin, controls and charging equipment
- Test every display, warning indicator, camera, sensor, climate function, seat adjustment and driver-assistance control.
- Confirm that the supplied charging cable and adapters are present and undamaged.
- Inspect the charge-port pins and cover; do not force a connector that does not latch or release normally.
- Verify that the vehicle can begin and end a charging session without unexplained errors.
A short public-charger session is useful, but it does not certify battery health or recall completion. Ask for a scan of stored fault codes and an inspection of the high-voltage system by a technician familiar with the Ioniq 5.
Confirm warranty coverage for this exact car
Hyundai’s U.S. warranty page directs owners to the applicable warranty handbook. Remaining coverage depends on the vehicle’s original in-service date, mileage, title status, market, edition and the terms in the handbook that applies to that VIN. Transfer rules can also differ by component and buyer circumstances.

- Write down the VIN and original in-service date.
- Ask Hyundai or an authorized dealer for the remaining warranty by component, including the high-voltage battery, related electric-drive equipment and 12-volt battery.
- Provide the title history and ask whether any branded-title, commercial-use or other exclusion affects eligibility.
- Request the answer in writing or have the dealer note it on a repair-order printout.
Do not value a used Ioniq 5 on the assumption that the battery or ICCU warranty automatically transfers. Verify it for the individual vehicle and your market before signing.
Check for every other VIN-specific safety campaign
Aftermarket checklists become stale. Consumer Reports’ 2026 reliability page reports that certain 2025–2026 Ioniq 5 vehicles were recalled in February 2026 because of a high-voltage battery electrical-short risk. That secondary report does not establish that a particular car is affected, but it illustrates why a current VIN lookup is more reliable than a static model-year list. Run the official lookup again if the car has been sitting on a dealer’s lot or if a new recall is announced during your search.

Available evidence does not establish a universally best Ioniq 5 model year or trim. Battery capacity, range, charging performance and equipment vary by version and market, so confirm the exact specification of each candidate rather than comparing badges.

A practical buying sequence
- Before visiting: obtain the VIN, run the official recall searches and ask for the complete service file.
- Before a deposit: call an IONIQ-certified dealer to verify open campaigns, completed Recall 257/272 work and warranty status.
- At the car: inspect the 12-volt battery, warning history, title documents, charge port, tires, brakes, body and interior.
- During the inspection: pay for a written pre-purchase examination that includes stored fault codes and high-voltage-system checks by a qualified technician.
- During the test drive: start with a full charge, watch for charging or power warnings, test normal and low-speed driving, and confirm that no warning appears after parking and restarting.
- Before signing: match the VIN on the contract, retain copies of campaign and warranty records, and make the deal conditional on any promised repair being completed and documented.
When to walk away or renegotiate
- The seller will not provide the VIN or blocks an official recall lookup.
- An open ICCU campaign is present and the seller will not arrange completion at an IONIQ-certified dealer.
- Repair records mention repeated low-voltage failures but do not show a diagnosis.
- The car has unexplained power-reduction warnings, persistent charging faults or stored trouble codes.
- Title, mileage or accident information conflicts across documents.
- The seller prices the car as if full warranty coverage remains but cannot obtain VIN-specific confirmation.
An open recall does not automatically make the car unbuyable; it does make the unresolved repair a condition of the transaction. If a dealer completes the campaign and supplies the documentation, reassess the vehicle rather than relying on the original sales pitch.
What this evidence cannot tell you
- There is no reliable, named model-level failure rate or owner-survey percentage here that supports calling ICCU failures common or rare.
- No current used-market price, depreciation forecast, insurance quote, charging-cost calculation or local incentive applies to every buyer.
- No universal ranking of model years or trims has been established.
- A recall listing does not predict whether an individual car will fail after repair.
Those unknowns are not reasons to ignore the Ioniq 5. They are reasons to compare documented cars on condition, campaign status, warranty, equipment, range needs and total cost instead of choosing by year alone.
Final buying judgment
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 can be a good used buy when the VIN has no unresolved safety campaigns, Recall 272 and related ICCU work are documented, the 12-volt and high-voltage systems pass an independent inspection, and the warranty position is clear. It is a poor risk when the seller cannot produce records, warning history is unexplained or the price assumes coverage that Hyundai has not confirmed. Make the decision on the individual car’s evidence, not on a blanket verdict about every Ioniq 5.
