Is The Dolus SUV A Real Car?

The Dolus is a real physical movie vehicle from Locked, but not a production SUV. It was custom-built from heavily modified 2020 Land Rover Defenders.

Not as a production vehicle. The Dolus is the fictional luxury SUV featured in the 2025 thriller Locked. The cars seen on screen were real, driveable film vehicles, but no automaker sells a Dolus, and there is no Dolus dealership model or official production brand.

What is the Dolus SUV?

The Dolus is the film’s purpose-built luxury SUV. It was created to look like an expensive, technologically advanced vehicle with a threatening personality, rather than to represent an existing model that viewers can order.

That distinction matters because the production built physical vehicles for filming. The Dolus was not added digitally to every scene, nor is it simply a stock SUV wearing a fictional badge. The cars used in Locked were heavily modified from real Land Rover Defender donor vehicles.

What real SUV is the Dolus based on?

Production reporting identifies the donor vehicles as 2020 Land Rover Defenders, reportedly using the Defender 110 platform. Some interviews refer more generally to a “Range Rover frame,” but the more detailed account points to Defenders as the underlying vehicles.

The finished movie SUV received extensive custom work, including its exterior bodywork, trim, interior components and film-specific equipment. Calling it “a Land Rover Defender” is therefore only partly accurate: the Defender supplied the foundation, while the visible Dolus was substantially redesigned and rebuilt for the movie.

How many Dolus vehicles were made?

The production used three different Dolus vehicles or vehicle builds, each serving a separate filming purpose:

Vehicle Purpose What happened
Hero car Close-ups and exterior shots A fully finished, functioning vehicle
Stunt car Driving, impact and action sequences Destroyed during production
Interior/set car Interior filming Built as a filming rig, with sections able to move apart on rails for cameras and crew

So the claim that there was only one Dolus is not correct. The hero car is the principal completed example, but the production needed separate builds for stunts and interior work.

The finished hero vehicle is displayed at the Volo Museum in Illinois, which lists it as a one-of-a-kind custom SUV from Locked. Seeing the car there does not make Dolus a consumer brand; it is a film vehicle and museum exhibit.

A specialist could theoretically reproduce its appearance by starting with a Land Rover Defender and commissioning custom bodywork and interior modifications. That would be a one-off replica or tribute build, not an original Dolus purchased from an automaker. It would also require careful attention to road-registration, safety and insurance requirements, since movie props and custom conversions are not automatically legal for public-road use.

Which Dolus features are real?

The physical SUV, its underlying Defender hardware and much of its custom bodywork were real. The more extreme capabilities shown or implied in the film should not be treated as standard vehicle equipment.

Why the Dolus is easy to mistake for a real car

The confusion comes from the way the vehicle is presented. It has a distinctive name, a complete design language and a convincing interior, while the production used working vehicles rather than a simple computer-generated prop. The museum display also confirms that a physical Dolus build exists.

But a real physical vehicle is not the same thing as a real production model. Many films use one-off cars assembled from existing platforms. Those vehicles can drive, appear in museum collections and even be sold at auction without ever becoming an automaker’s commercially available product.

Dolus SUV: the accurate answer

The Dolus is a real movie car but not a real production car. It was created for Locked using heavily modified Land Rover Defender-based vehicles. Three builds supported the production, and the completed hero car is now exhibited at the Volo Museum. There is no factory Dolus SUV to buy, lease or test-drive.
